American Indians swim onto Alcatraz island, Part II
About This Item
KRON news footage from November 9th 1969 with reporter Mike Mills featuring scenes of American Indian activists dancing on San Francisco's Vista Pier, catching a ride on the Monte Cristo yacht and swimming over to Alcatraz Island. Also includes views of Mohawk Richard Oakes reading part of a proclamation to reporters and Earl Livermore reading from a different part of the proclamation. There are also brief shots of Adam Fortunate Eagle and Dr. LaNada War Jack (known then as LaNada Means) on the Monte Cristo. Opening graphic designed by Carrie Hawks.
Note that this 16mm film footage was found on a KRON film reel from 6/11/1971, which was the final day of the American Indian occupation of Alcatraz. These scenes were clearly shot as part of reel KRON 677-2 on 11/9/1969 and were presumably taken from that earlier reel by KRON editors to provide historical perspective of the occupation on it's last day in 1971.
