Name-giving is a common phenomenon in many societies, and among the Hittites as well, ânamesâ exhibit aspects of cultural traditions. On a linguistic level, Hittite names take different forms, sometimes composed of a theophoric element or using a divine name simply as a personal name. This paper attempts to analyse names from the Empire Period to deduce some information from them about religious pluralism. It can be shown that name-giving also takes into account some gods who play only a minor role in the âofficialâ religion of the Hittite Empire.
