Requested move 23 March 2025
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: moved to a variation. There is consensus to include "NATO" in the titles of these articles. Most opposition was conditional on retaining the city names, so I see a rough consensus in favor of the format "[year] [city] NATO summit". I see no consensus on what to do with the exceptions, which are the extraordinary summits and the 2002 Rome summit, so those can be BOLDly moved or discussed in a more targeted RM in future. – Per WP:UCRN: "[year] NATO summit" is a more recognizable title format, rather than mentioning the host city/location. The meetings in 2001 and 2015 were commonly referred to as 'special meetings' ([1]; [2]), while the meetings in February and March 2022 were 'extraordinary summits' ([3]; [4]). The title 'NATO–Russia summit' was used for the 2002 Rome summit (see [5]; [6]; [7]). — Ætoms [talk] 22:13, 23 March 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. Valorrr (lets chat) 18:01, 7 April 2025 (UTC) — Relisting. - Makes more sense indeed Dajasj (talk) 09:55, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- In addition to my comments below, I don't think there are many other examples of conferences that don't mention the organisation, for example 2024 G20 Rio de Janeiro summit, 5th European Political Community Summit, 2024 Bilderberg Conference, APEC Peru 2024, 2024 Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (Category:2024 conferences). Dajasj (talk) 18:21, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Can't see why the location of the summit shouldn't be mentioned in the title. The host city of is mentioned on the NATO website in the official texts (see), the location is also mentioned in most summit logos (since 1994, at least from what I've seen). Alin2808 (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- I think it is mainly problematic that is unclear from the title that it is a NATO summit. I believe mentioning NATO (and the year) is more important than the host city. The city could be added, but that would make it less concise.
- It also somewhat makes sense that the city is named in official texts and logos, because countries want the attention after spending so much on the summit. However because it is in the text from NATO, it is already obvious that it refers to a NATO summit. Dajasj (talk) 13:45, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- How about mentioning both the location and the fact that it was a NATO summit? I don't see how that would make it less concise. That way we follow both the official texts and clarify that it's a NATO summit. Alin2808 (talk) 14:03, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- I believe it would it make it unnecessarily long. There are also many official pages that don't include the city in the title (but in the text), for example: [8], [9], [10] Dajasj (talk) 14:22, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with @Alin2808. Stating a full title might be long, but it seems like the best option. Only listing NATO and the year will not distinguish the summits from each other very well. Only listing the location and the year will make the subject of the summit unclear. Alexander vee (talk) 22:41, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, it also helps in distinguishing the summits. Take for example the three 2022 summits. The proposed titles of "March 2022 extraordinary NATO summit" and "February 2022 extraordinary NATO summit" are a lot more unnecessarily long than the current titles. Alin2808 (talk) 22:46, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- Which would become even longer if we add the city? I'm btw not opposed to the proposal as a compromise, but I prefer AEtoms proposal. Dajasj (talk) 06:10, 25 March 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose I don't see why it would be sensible not to include the city in the title, and a title in the format [year] NATO [city] summit would be quite clunky. — 🦅White-tailed eagleTalk to the eagleStalking eagle 22:12, 26 March 2025 (UTC)

- Support Clearly more recognisable. I’m not seeing a persuasive reason to retain the city name.
- Rafts of Calm (talk) 22:34, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- I agree with the movement to a new name. I think it would be more clear than as it is now.
FakTNeviM (talk) 13:59, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
- However, I have a different proposal. A possible compromise in naming standard
e.g. 2025 The Hague summit (NATO) So we only add a bracket specifying the organisation. FakTNeviM (talk) 13:59, 30 March 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. Provide redirects from the proposed new names, certainly (a few are already in place), that would be helpful. And a List of NATO summit conferences would be helpful too, with a brief summary of the main points of each. But the current names are more recognisable than the proposals, and unambiguous. Andrewa (talk) 01:30, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
- This list already exists on NATO Summit (although perhaps not in the form you want). I have added a redirect. Dajasj (talk) 18:22, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Relisting comment: Gather more consensus. Valorrr (lets chat) 18:01, 7 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose as nominated, since this appears to capture some different classes of issues. The concern about the city titles is merely that they are not specified as NATO summits, which is a very different concern from the various titles already containing NATO, which should have a separate discussion. For the cities, I think that in any given year there will be all sorts of events that can be described as "summits" and every major city in the world, and the best outcome would be to add NATO to the titles without removing the city name so, for example, 1991 Rome NATO summit. BD2412 T 17:11, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- I support this suggestion for the 1991 Rome NATO summit approach suggested above by several editors. Rafts of Calm (talk) 18:27, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- I support the suggestion by BD2412 for this naming convention for all the NATO summits. NerdyEpiscopalian (talk) 22:38, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
- Support: Unless the summits are overwhelmingly known by the city names in sources, I support the proposal. Same reason as why 2024 Summer Olympics is preferred over "2024 Paris Games" or the like. It helps consistency and recognizability. No opinion on whether or not to include both city and NATO in title. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 21:34, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

Implementation
[edit]I have moved most of the pages per my close above. I skipped some:
- 2022 Brussels summit, as an extraordinary summit
- 2022 NATO virtual summit, as an extraordinary summit
- 2015 NATO emergency meeting, as an emergency meeting
- 2005 NATO Headquarters summit, because it is named for a building, not a city, and already has "NATO" in the title
- 2001 NATO Headquarters summit, same reason
- 2002 Rome summit, because it was an exceptional summit that included Russia
- 2022 NATO summit, because this is a disambiguation page.
I am leaving these open for bold moves or further discussion. I will also note that I have not updated the bold text in the lead of each article, since it doesn't seem necessary to me when the titles are descriptive. If you disagree, you may update the bold text to match the titles. Toadspike [Talk] 14:31, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

- @Toadspike: Thank you for closing the discussion. I boldly moved the following skipped pages:
- I also proposed 2005 Brussels NATO summit and 2001 NATO special meeting for deletion, since they contain very little information and do not clearly meet Wikipedia's notability guideline. — Ætoms [talk] 18:09, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, Ætoms. These new titles seem in line with the consensus that developed in the RM. I guess the matter is now resolved. Toadspike [Talk] 18:13, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

Planned Edits
[edit]I am planning on making several changes and edits to this article in the coming weeks. Firstly, the article has many instances where additional information and sentences could be added to provide more context to the topics being discussed. I will focus first on solidifying the content that is already there before I move to added more sections. I would like to add new sections about what the upcoming Summit plans to discuss. Because these meetings only happen during periods of international strife, there are multiple articles online detailing the potential agenda for discussion. Another section I would like to add is a short history on different summits in the Hague. Finally, I would like to add a section about legacy. Because the summit has not happened yet, this will most likely be a shorter paragraph about the reputation of past Hague Summits. Moreover, I plan on vastly increasing and changing the current sources that are listed in the references section. A large portion of the links no longer work or are hidden behind a paywall. Additionally, many of these sources are in polish and danish. I have compiled a list of similar sources with english translations that I will add so that english readers can also validate the article. Please see my annotated bibliography in the bibliography sandbox on the Wikipedia dashboard. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Woc9/2025_The_Hague_summit/Bibliography&action=edit Woc9 (talk) 12:24, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello @Woc9, welcome to Wikipedia! You have been assigned a difficult topic however, because it has not taken place yet. I think it would be wise to read WP:CRYSTAL. It's also important to note that these meetings not only happen durings periods of international strife, but yearly (see NATO summit). I also saw you included a UNESCO link in your bibliography that talks about the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, but I don't see how they are related (and if they are, please include a source which makes the link). It is a bit unfortunate that the article does not include "NATO" in the title, but that is being adressed above. It's also not just an international event, so it remains important to keep information about how it impacts the Netherlands. The sources are btw Dutch, not Polish and Danish (and check out WP:PAYWALL and WP:NONENG).
- I hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions. Dajasj (talk) 14:04, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for your feedback! I am still learning so I will straighten out these errors! Woc9 (talk) 13:13, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
