Die Fliege

We moved from 2024 to 2025, with new calendar pictures and new music. The topic of Bach's chorale cantatas will keep me busy until 25 March, and then I want to focus on performances more generally, in history and in my experience. You can follow my daily stories, {{User Gerda Arendt/Top}}, often with an image and something to listen to: let's stay inspired and connected. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:57, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ongoing efforts regard locations that played a role in my life, recent deaths, music heard and sung, composers, gardens. Watch my user page for articles, done in collaboration. Compare 2024 for the amazing number of users who began and expanded articles. Thanks also to reviewers, and I do plan to review more and write less, and in writing, focus more on quality than the little daily article.

2025 calender pics and musical events begin here, and the 2025 diary of my own pictures of places, songs, food, flowers is here, - just watch those lists if you are interested.

My talk goes like this: on top there's the "story" related to the day. Below are three or more boxes, often one for people remembered and others for musical experiences, performing or listening. In these boxes, topics related to the top story and topics featured on the Main page appear bold. Right here you see the image of the month with songs of the month, typically related to friends who gave them to me, on their birthdays or when meeting them. I archive from time. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:25, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The article Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8 and Talk:Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben, BWV 8/GA1 for issues which need to be addressed. Message delivered by ChristieBot, on behalf of Aza24 -- Aza24 (talk) 00:24, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Aza24, thank you for the thorough review. I understand that in order to make Bach's chorale cantatas a good topic, this cantata - as part of it - has to be a good article, and I am willing to put work into it to make it so. However, right now I'm working simultaneously on several others with the same goal, and they require less work. I see me getting to serious changes for BWV 8 after the others, which will be in February. (The only one written later, BWV 1, is already a FA.) I'll make small changes now, perhaps today, but will then have to ask if the nom should remain open for longer or be closed and started over when I'm ready. Y'all: any help with this one and the others - making changes or reviewing - is welcome, see above, #calling for collaboration. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:06, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Articles of people who recently died have been a focus from 2019. in 2025, they have been a daily topic, both on the Main page were Helmut Schlesinger appeared from 31 January until 5 January, but also in the daily little articles, with the one exception of a Sunday. Not all of them made it to Main page appearance, but were at least improved. Storye book is great in finding images, MONTENSEM in polishing composers' articles, Thriley in translating to begin articles for people with red links, Grimes2 all around helpful in finding and exploiting references, and several excellent in posting (just look belpw). 7 March 2025, Ravel’s 150th anniversary

[edit]

Hi! I’ve seen you around a couple of times from some discussions that you have had with others and noticed that you love classical music! I’d thought that I would share with you my love for Maurice Ravel (my number one favorite composer for several years). I listened to several concerts this year dedicated to his 150th anniversary: pieces included La valse, Boléro, Introduction and Allegro, etc., all very wonderful pieces. Tfess up?or down? 01:01, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I thought of it and brought him to the main page at least by mentioning his name. I will write my story about one of his pieces, Trois Chansons (Ravel), created on 7 March 2019. (I had meant to use the Introduction and Allegro, in which I was involved a bit in 2011.) I want to create a new article on the occasion, Tout est lumière. Nice to meet you and your love! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:32, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Did you meet me in a discussion from Talk:Maurice Ravel/Archive 1? - My story:

Maurice Ravel
wrote texts and music for
Trois Chansons,
his only composition for choir a cappella,
in response to the outbreak
of World War I.

I fondly remember ballet, opera and concert including an opera whose 100th birthday is coming up soon! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:54, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for responding! Trois Chansons? I’ll need to check that out, haha. And I’ve seen you around on user talk pages sharing some works of music, etc., so that was how I found out about you. Very sweet of you! (I was into Wikipedia editing for only 5-6 years so I’m a little bit of a newbie.) Tfess up?or down? 14:22, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead, check out. When I came across the Trois Chansons I was intrigued by his response to war: write something light, in your tradition, strengthening identity. I always list the articles I look at on my user page, - feel free to add and correct. - Below: almost too much of a good thing, a conductor and five other composers to be celeebrated ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:44, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds interesting, but I would understand nothing, - amateur choir singer that I am. Jerry and I formed our friendship here, when he helped me with my first steps and corrected a fact form a source, - the source was wrong. Sandwich text

[edit]

Your stories are hard to read. Text is sandwiched on the left side of the picture. Example Alla Osipenko. Grimes2 11:26, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Sandwiched means between two pictures, there's only one in the article. Or do you mean the Story. I can't help that looking different for different user definitions of image upright, - for me, there's no text left of the image. Should I use fixed pixels, perhaps? Which would be hard because I always tried to avoid that, and the framing template doesn't offer it, at present. How is this for you? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:00, 19 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Signpost?

[edit]

I was thinking, why not structure, compose, and anthologize your "stories" and updates in such a way that it is written as a column for The Signpost? It would need to be current and topical, but I think it would be super interesting, and could give needed insight into how one person (you) approaches content creation on a topic that is both personal, professional, educational and entertaining. I think such a column could benefit from a co-writer, perhaps one of your close collaborators on the music-related projects. You could structure the column in such a way that it gives readers insight, from a very quotidian, "I'm in the studio throwing clay and my hands are dirty and the cat just knocked over my coffee" style (this could be against the rules of German culture, however), into how one goes about applying their interest and expertise to the article creation process, and it could walk them through the vagaries and idiosyncrasies, in a very detailed and hands-on way, from DYK, ITN, GAN, to FAC. Something like, "This is the song I've been performing lately, and it led me to write articles x, y, and z, and this is what I had to do to get it through DYK and GAN, and I was helped by User X, but found constructive criticism with User Y, etc." Also, you could even collaborate with avowed rivals like Naruto for some kind of humorous effect, which could add self-deprecating humor as well. I've seen a lot of technical columns like this, a very nuts and bolts style, in the coding community outside Wikipedia; I don't see any reason why we shouldn't have one devoted to music content creation in the same way. Something to think about? Viriditas (talk) 00:40, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thak you for thinking, and I was pretty amused about the cat and the "rivalry" ;) - Sorry, I don't get to "my topics" enough. See below, a harpist and a composer went to the main page, the harpist got a decent obit only now - prompted by our list perhaps, I wonder - which isn't in the article, the symphony article isn't developped yet, another recent death article waiting for 4 days already, and let's not talk of long-term plans such as BWV 79 for FA in October (struggling with the current "defiant" nomination) and the St Matthew Passion for 2027 which is soon. How about you writing a funny thing about what you observe: that frustration about not being able to tell the stories I find interesting on DYK, and instead having my little private enterprise where nobody looks. (One recent story, not advertised, raised the count from the usual 5 to 16, imagine! Yesterdayy's ended at 10.) --
A Signpost article (or column) gets around 500-1500 views on average, but that's just a guess based on its viewable stats. The good news is that's more than 16. :) I just learned this format is called process journalism, but we don't even have a page about it! Let's use your above comment as an example: How did the harpist and composer get to the main page? What did you mean by the harpist obit was prompted by the list? And yes, the long-term plan for BWV 79 as a FA is exactly the process I'm talking about. This is a column in itself. I want to know these things, and along the way, I want to learn about the music. When you combine the two, it's absolutely fascinating. This is more of a talking shop kind of niche, but focused solely on music articles and the process behind improving them. I don't have this specialist knowledge, but you do. Along the way, you can bring more people to music and attract them to your special interest. Viriditas (talk) 09:00, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Good friday

[edit]

Hi, you reverted on Good Friday [1] with the comment "the service, yes, but not the occasion". Is this a misunderstanding, as it seems to be exactly my point: the service is called like this but not the whole day? Greetings, Medusahead (talk) 09:23, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

But the article is not about the service alone, and things bolded (to indicate a redirect) in the lead should be other names for the article name, which is the occasion. You can add a sentence about the service and it's name in the prose of the article, with a reference, and perhaps mention it in the lead, but not bold. All this should better be discussed on the article talk page. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:28, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You are right: I think I wasn't quite awake then ;) - thank you for improving! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:38, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

J.S. Bach DYK nomination

[edit]

Hi Gerda. The J.S. Bach DYK nom has just been reviewed. Missing citations have been spotted in para 2 of the 18th century section, and para 2 of the 20th century section. Please find citations, or find an editor who can? Thanks. Storye book (talk) 06:46, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for telling me. It came up in the PR also. I'll see what I can do. So far I didn't write anything in that article, and those who did most are banned. Everybody welcome to help!! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:50, 5 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
