Pannonian Rusyn

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Slovak nápad, from Proto-Slavic *napadъ. The Czech and Slovak sense of "idea" appears to be a later derivation; Old Slovak, just as modern South Slavic and East Slavic, had chiefly attested the sense of "attack". By surface analysis, deverbal from нападац (napadac). Cognates include Carpathian Rusyn напад (napad, attack) and Slovak nápad (idea).
