I updated to a new version of iBooks for the iPad and now I can’t find the brightness controls for books — does this mean I have to use the overall brightness slider in the Settings?
Apple recently updated its iBooks app for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and made changes in the program’s user interface. The on-screen icon to control the screen’s brightness for books has moved into the same menu that lets you change the book’s font and type size.
If you want to dim or brighten the screen for an open e-book, tap the book page to show the control icons. Next, tap the Font icon (which looks like a pair of A’s) on the upper right side of the screen. When the menu box appears on the screen, you should see the slider for adjusting the iBooks screen brightness at the top.
The Font icon’s menu also holds a number of other enhancements that were added in the iBooks app update. This menu still holds the controls for increasing or decreasing a book’s type size, but there are some new fonts to choose from (including Iowan and Seravek), which replace fonts like Baskerville and Cochin from earlier versions of the app.
The new Theme button in the Font menu allows readers to choose a plain white background for books, a brownish sepia tint or a “Night” scheme with white text on a black background for reading in the dark. The iPad version of the app also has a button to display the book’s text in full-screen mode.
Most of the app’s changes center on books purchased from Apple’s iBookstore. While the iBooks app can also store and display PDF files, the brightness controls for those documents are still at the top of the screen.
