Mar. 28, 1946 in Cabana, Ancash, Peru; economist; president of Peru in 2001-2006; known fondly by his supporters as El Cholo (The Indian); son of impoverished Quechuan farmers; grew up shining shoes on the northern coast in the city of Chimbote; bachelor's from the University of San Francisco (1970); master's degrees in economics of human resources (1971) and economics (1972) from Stanford University; worked in international economics at the United Nations (1976-78, 1989) and the World Bank (1979-81); returned to Peru in 1981 and became the social policy adviser to Labour Minister Alfonso Grados; while earning a Ph.D. (1993) in economics of human resources at Stanford, Toledo was a visiting scholar at Harvard University's Institute for International Development; in 1998 he became director of international affairs at the Graduate School of Business Administration (Escuela de Administración de Negocios para Graduados; ESAN) in Lima; after his presidency he accepted a faculty position at ESAN teaching finance, accounting, and economics; from 2006 to 2008 he was on leave as a visiting fellow at Stanford University; founded the Lima-based think tank Global Center for Development and Democracy, which addresses issues of democracy, economic growth, and social inclusion; in 2013 Toledo became the target of investigations into the source of his family's wealth; in February 2017 his arrest was ordered after he was implicated in an influence-peddling scandal that grew out of an investigation related to Brazil's Petrobras scandal; during his tenure as president Toledo alledgedly received some $20 million in bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht in exchange for granting a billion-dollar-plus contract to build a highway between Brazil and Peru) https://www.britannica.com/biography/Alejandro-Toledo
