"Wasted Love" is the debut single by Austrian singer JJ. The song was released on 6 March 2025 and was written by JJ himself alongside Teodora Špirić and Thomas Thurner.[3] It won the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 for Austria.

Background and composition

[edit]

Wasted Love was written by Johannes Pietsch, Teodora "Teya" Špirić and Thomas Thurner, the latter also responsible for the production, alongside Pele Loriano and Wojciech Kostrzewa.[4] Blending pop and lyrical contents in a crescendo that culminates with techno elements,[5] the song explores the torment of unrequited love. The protagonist, surrounded by an "ocean of love", watches the person he loves move on due to fear of being "drowned" in it. Despite his attempt to hold on to something the past, he remained adrift in an emotional sea, as he could not fill the void left by the breakup.[6] The lyrics are entirely in English. According to JJ, the song was inspired by his own experience of wasted love: "I poured out too much love and nothing came back."[7]

Music video and promotion

[edit]

The music video for "Wasted Love", directed by Vesely Marek, was released to coincide with the release of the single's through the Eurovision Song Contest channel on YouTube.[8][9] To further promote the song, JJ participated in various Eurovision pre-parties before the contest such as Eurovision in Concert on 5 April,[10] the London Eurovision Party on 13 April,[11] and Pre-Party ES on 19 April.[12]

Critical reception

[edit]

"Wasted Love" received positive reviews. In a Wiwibloggs review containing several reviews from several critics, the song was rated 7.87 out of 10 points,[13] earning 4th out of the 37 songs competing in that year's Eurovision in the site's annual ranking that year.[14] David Mouriquand (Euronews) called it a "textbook example of what Eurovision songs should sound like." It proved that being in the emotional abyss and partying are not mutually exclusive.[15] Melanie Falkensteiner, for Melomaniacs, emphasized the storytelling—the first line is a simple, yet poetic and poignant description of heartbreak. She attests to the song's high replay value.[16]

Eurovision Song Contest 2025

[edit]

Internal selection

[edit]

On 7 September 2024, Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF), the Austrian broadcaster for the Eurovision Song Contest, officially confirmed their intentions to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, deciding their representative through an internal selection.[17] The following month, Austrian media reported that eight entries from seven artists, including Pietsch, had been shortlisted following a live casting round at the ORF studios.[18][19] On 30 January 2025, the ORF announced that "Wasted Love" performed by Pietsch, under the professional name JJ, was selected as the Austrian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest during the radio show Ö3-Wecker, which aired on Ö3.[20] "Wasted Love" was selected as one the eight shortlisted entries by a panel of 30 local and international music industry and Eurovision experts as well as nearly 30 international OGAE fan club representatives from five different countries and the ORF Eurovision Song Contest Team.[4] The presentation of the song took place on 6 March 2025 during Ö3-Wecker.[21][22]

At Eurovision

[edit]

The Eurovision Song Contest 2025 took place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, and consisted of two semi-finals held on the respective dates of 13 and 15 May and the final on 17 May 2025.[23] During the allocation draw held on 28 January 2025, Austria was drawn to compete in the second semi-final, performing in the first half of the show.[24] Austria qualified for the final.[25]

JJ performed a repeat of his performance in the grand final on 17 May. The song performed 9th, after the United Kingdom's Remember Monday and before Iceland's Væb.[26] The song then went on to win, after receiving a total of 436 points including 178 from the audience and 258 (most overall) from the jury.[27]

The song's staging was designed by Sergio Jaén, and was inspired by the film The Lighthouse.
