A Tale of 11 Broken Xbox 360s
One person's bad luck or proof of a serious problem? You be the judge.
"I can't comment on failure rates, because it's just not something - it's a moving target. What this consumer should worry about is the way that we've treated him. Y'know, things break, and if we've treated him well and fixed his problem, that's something that we're focused on right now."
-- Peter Moore on Xbox 360 failure rates
Average, Aggravated Gamers
Justin Lowe is your average hardcore gamer. He's fully embraced the HD era, owning both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and loves his Nintendo DS and PSP for gaming on-the-go. He even helps run Aggravated Gamers, an indie gaming podcast. What's special about Justin, though, is he's currently on his twelfth Xbox 360.
"I'm no fanboy," he says, but there's no doubt he's a 360 fan. He purchased his first machine a month after the console launch, but, since then, Justin has not had a working system for longer than a month or two. The list of problems is almost comically large: three red lights of death, two with disc read errors, two dead on arrival, several with random audio and video-related issues and one that actually exploded.
Looking at the situation through Moore's own standards, how has Microsoft performed? "On a scale of one to ten, I'd rate them an 8... at first," says Lowe. His 360 broke in early January, just a few weeks after purchase. For the first six months, Microsoft customer service was polite and replacements sent very quickly. Since then, things have slowly but surely taken a turn for the worse. As the reported number of problems with 360 consoles increases (Microsoft writes them off as "vocal minority"), shipping has started taking longer and customer service less helpful.
As Justin garnered more experience with 360 repairs, he discovered something. The consoles consumers sent back by Microsoft are often refurbished, rather than brand-new. Justin found out that, with enough problems and by specifically making the request, Microsoft would send out brand-new consoles as replacements. Midway through his ordeal, he began doing this, but quickly found the downside: new consoles can take even longer to send out, with up to two weeks spent waiting for Microsoft approval. Microsoft has compensated Justin to some degree. A month of Xbox Live service, replacement headsets, some free Microsoft Points and at least one free game were offered at various points. He claims to have never asked for anything beyond the Xbox Live time.
When his third 360 broke, one customer service rep suggested he look into the wiring at his house; electricity problems could have been causing the mess-ups. Problem: none of his other systems (not to mention his several computers and other electronics) have experienced any major problems, and his father is, coincidentally, an electrician. The specific suggestion was brought up by Microsoft customer service again after the eighth console repair. This time, just to be certain, Justin had a contractor come to the house and check the wiring, where he was told that everything was in order, with no abnormalities in voltage of any of house outlets. Nevertheless, customer service has continued to suggest this as a potential cause.
If Justin's story seems too crazy to be believed here on 1UP, it's unsurprising to learn that's how message boards responded, too. He posted his plight at both Cheap Ass Gamer and NeoGAF and was promptly called a liar by many, before he decided to record a call with Microsoft's customer support.
In an MP3 that Justin shared with 1UP -- which you can listen to below -- he asks a service representative to read off his support/repair request numbers. After opening the account, the rep lets out an audible laugh. He reads them off and confirms they are under Justin's account. Just to be sure, 1UP called into Xbox Live support with Justin's contact info and asked for the same information. Again, the person on the other end laughed when they accessed Justin's account, remarking, "It looks like you have a lot of numbers."
To the various internet commentators and those manning Microsoft's customer service phone lines, it seems an unbelievable joke, but, to Justin, each one of those numbers represents another little headache and two or three weeks without his console. "I am still a huge fan of the 360, even with all of the problems," he says. "It's just the 360 is where the games are at right now." Justin owns nearly 20 games for 360.
Justin's eleventh 360 sports an all-new problem that popped up shortly after 1UP originally contacted him. This time, it's a sound-related issue, causing loud, experience-ruining crackles that pop in and out of games. Justin just recently received the box to ship this console back for his twelfth shot at something that works, but initially held off to take part in the Halo 3 beta and check out Forza Motorsport 2.
Gamers, We Have a Problem
1UP contacted Microsoft -- including an Xbox AOC Escalation Lead Justin interacted with -- before running this story. "We are disappointed any time we hear about a customer having a negative experience with our products or services. Justin Lowe's experience is highly unusual and we are actively investigating the situation further to ensure that we are taking responsibility where we need to," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "You will be pleased to hear that Justin is back to playing his favorite Xbox 360 games now that he has received a brand-new console."
That's true. Justin confirmed to us Microsoft shipped him another working console, but Microsoft continually dodged 1UP's attempts to specifically discuss Xbox 360 failure rates and attributed some of the public disdain to dissatisfaction with customer service, not the actual hardware. Changes to the customer service program were rolled out in April, said Microsoft.
I would go back and say the vast majority of people love their experience. There is a vocal minority out there |
But, bad luck aside, is this reflective of a larger problem with the Xbox 360 console itself? In an interview at The Mercury News, Todd Holmdahl, corporate vice president of the Gaming and Xbox Products Group, attributed the complaints over hardware to be a "vocal minority" and nothing more. "I would go back and say the vast majority of people love their experience. We continue to go back and address all of these issues on a case by case basis," he said.
When asked if Microsoft still agreed with Holmdahl's comment that complaints were just a "vocal minority," they did. "Yes, Microsoft stands by Todd's statement," said the company.
When specifically asked about the additional heat sinks appearing in refurbished Xbox 360s and how customer service determines if a consumer receives a brand-new machine or a refurbished one:
1UP: Microsoft won't comment on these second heat sinks showing up in refurbished Xbox 360s -- which, as far as we know so far, are not in the retail units -- so how does customer service determine whether someone should receive a "new" machine and an internally "refurbished" one?Microsoft: In either an in-warranty or out-of-warranty situation, most customers will now receive their original console back from Microsoft so there is no need for customers to reload profiles, games or other content previously stored on their hard drive. This is part of our ongoing-effort to improve our repair warranty program and enhance our customer service operations.
Similar dodging occurred a few weeks ago, when asked about the heat sinks. Despite the visual evidence, Microsoft refused to confirm their existence.
1UP: Reports are surfacing of users getting refurbished Xbox 360s with additional heat sinks installed in them...can Microsoft confirm?Microsoft: In response to your inquiry, regularly updating console components is commonplace within the industry and is a standard aspect of the business for a variety of reasons including cost reduction, improved manufacturability and improved performance. We do not provide details on these updates.
1UP: But, will they appear in on-shelf Xbox 360s?
Microsoft: Again, regularly updating console components is commonplace within the industry and is a standard aspect of the business for a variety of reasons including cost reduction, improved manufacturability and improved performance. We do not provide details on these updates.
In spite of all of this, Justin is still behind Microsoft's console. "I still like Microsoft, as much as that may astound people. There's no real hate towards the company for what I have experienced."

2nd 360, 4th failure!
Posted: Aug 18, 2011 12:00AM PST by msmamiller
I am on my second xbox 360, the first one is dead, out of warranty and barely lasted me two years! I got the red light of death, power cord failure, and ultimately unable to read discs. Microsoft had the nerve to want to charge me 99 to fix the unreadable disk, although many consumers have had the problem! My son loves it, so I bough him another one, a xbox 360 s 250G and I feel stupid. It is barely 5 months old and now yet another power cord has failed and xbox could care less, seriously. They pretend to care, telling me that I would receive the new power cord in 2 to 3 days, I purchased one as a back-up, because I have lost trust, their system and hard ware are unreliable. Then I would send the faulty one back for a free exchange... turns out it took them 2 days to just process my order and it will get here some time this week or next. I believe this story and also believe that xbox is fully aware of a serious failure rate problem. They should be ashamed of their unreliable systems and customer service, who will mislead you... more than help you. I truly believe it depends on your area as to whether or not they send you faulty systems. Most people in my area don"t trust xbox's, even salesmen are turning against it, saying they can not recommend it because of all of the heat their stores and retailers take... in fact many will discourage you from even getting it, telling you to wait until it has been out for awhile and all the "kinks have been worked out." I don't know if I can even trust xbox, their systems anymore. I have been a loyal consumer and fan for many... many years, I have so much gear, games, and have invested a lot of time, money... into xbox live, but when I have a problem, I don't think they care... they mislead... and they don't show any amount of respect to their consumers concerning cost and overall investment. I can order almost anything on the internet and if I am willing to pay the shipping, get it in two to three days, xbox couldn't even process my order in that time, even though it was do to faulty hard ware on a 5 month old system. I baby my systems, my gear, my games... but consider this... I have playstations that are almost as old as my son, a game cube... things I purchased when he was small, now he is 15, they still work and I have never had to send one back or order a part... nothing. There are Super NESs that still work to this day, yet the lifespan on my xbox seems to be maybe a year... I hope so the warrantly covers it or two... and now I better pay them even more money for something I am certain they know is an ongoing problem with multiple consumers. They should be ashamed at how they treat their loyal costomers... and if I have another issue with my xbox... I will demand my money back, trade in my games, gear, get a PS3 and never look back. They have made enough hard earned money off of me... one original xbox, one xbox 360 special edition halo 3 (dead) 3 major failures, one xbox 360 s 250 G, 7 controllers, almost 100 games including those downloaded from xbox live, chatpad, remote control, 4 head sets, monthly expense of xbox live, and so many microsoft points... I have invested thousands and I don't even expect to enjoy it for more than a year or two, sad really, because I was once a loyal fan and supporter... it was my own experience that made me realize... I have no reasons left to even trust them.

Another one bites the Dust ...contact the FTC
Posted: May 05, 2010 12:00AM PST by USMC_CT0331
Yep it has happened to me as well, i like many others now have a large white paperweight that says "Xbox 360". I got the RROD and then somehow fixed it only to have it die later. It now overheats when starting up and it doesnt even make it past the dashboard before it automatically shuts off, Xbox wont fix it without a fee of 100 dollars which is rediculous because i've only had the thing for 2 years and of that 2 years i spent at least 12 months either on deployment in Iraq or away training in the Marines. so it maybe got a 1 year of use...maybe. So for all of you out there with a broken xbox here is my message call the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) and file a complaint it only takes a couple minutes like 3-5 the phone number is 1-877-382-4357. It might not fix the problem over night but at least its something if we get enough people to file complaints maybe something will be done to these microsoft douchebags. the vocal minority my ass if we are such a small group why dont they just replace our xbox's for free? Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer can afford to compensate the vocal minority since combined they have a net worth of 55 billion dollars!!!!
-you can also contact your state attorney general to see what else can be done, for me thats the next step.

7th 360 is broken...I'm done.
Posted: Dec 04, 2009 12:00AM PST by physlab10
MS tried, and failed, to fix my first 360 6 times before they offered me the "advance exchange" program in which they sent me a "new" xbox elite FIRST. After I got it, I put my broken in they box and sent it to them. Well before my broken 360 could even make it back, the "new" elite 360 they sent me got 3 red rings.
I called support, and went 3 people of the chain of command to no avail. Only thing I got out of it was a higher phone bill and 2 days of delay. Now almost a week later, they still have not even sent out a replacement 360. I am writing the legal department and demanding a full refund for every penny I have spent on the 360. If I do not get it, I fully plan to try to sue MS. We have rights as comsumers to expect a product we spend money on to work as the company specifies. The fact that I've had a Xbox 360 for less than a year break 7 times (2 to 3 weeks of down time everytime) seems unreasonable to me.
I strongly suggest everyone with all these problems sends floods of emails to every person you can get an email address for to MS with a record of all your problems. I really wished PS3 had the live community and games that 360 does because I would switch in a heartbeat.

I was just wondering on whether 1UP has kept in touch with the guy who went through 11 Xbox360 consoles. I'm curious about:
1. Whether the issue has been resolved with him.
2. Which number is his "current" Xbox360 on?
3. Are there any similar cases with the PS3?

Refurbished xbox 360

Tired of recieving crap everyone sue at the sametime. I had my first360 about 2 years sent it back in december for the first time got my first refurb one 3weeks later and it was broken before I got it I sent it back and they sent it right back saying it was a different one but the model number was the SAME! and it still wasn't fixed! I called and yelled at them about it and they garuanteed me a working 360 but not a new one and yesturday 3weeks after sending the other one back I received a 360 that was even worse than the other one it won't play any game! I didn't pay over $500 dollars for a 360 and the warranty 2years ago to get shafted on the warranty when I needed it (which I shouldn't have needed it) I'm done playing games I'm sueing them for a breach of contract on the warranty I have more than enough proof to win since a woman can sue mcdonalds for being a idiot and spilling hot coffee on herself and getting $10million out of it! I want more plus justice! Thank you

Concerned

Well, I'm waiting for the box to send my first 360 back to M$. I have owned this system for just over 11 months before it failed. About 3 weeks ago it destoyed one of my games and this was NOT caused by moving the machine around. My machine is layed flat and never used vertically. Now this morning I turn it on and I get red flashing lights... I have had no other problems before this and have known several people who have but I thought maybe they just owned older systems or something. I have known about the RROD for a long time but again just assumed it was a problem that the release systems alone had. Well, now I am one of the many who are having to deal with this sort of thing. I have bragged about Xbox in the past but I can in no way be okay with the fact that I have bought a faulty piece of electronics. It's that simple. Now, I'm really concerned about sending mine in because I'm afraid that I'll end up with a refurb that will also fail. I mean, ONCE is enough. How can anyone support M$ on this? This has nothing to do with PS3 V. Xbox! This is not okay! It's a faulty product and it is failing in massive numbers! It's that simple! I am going to send this one in but if the next fails I'm demanding my money back. I'll lose bigtime on all the money spent on games and accessories but I will not get to the point wher I'm paying $100 for repairs over and over. This is horrible. I just pray that they will do the right thing and I get back something that will last me a reasonable amount of time. It's funny, if this were a TV or a PC component I would just try to get refunded and buy another brand...

It just doesn't add up
Posted: Jan 03, 2008 12:00AM PST by beeport
If only a few Xbox 360's are having a problem the multi-billion dollar MS corporation should have no problem replacing ALL of the malfunctioning units. Then there wouldn't be an issue. But they haven't done that because it's not just a few. As for the comment that the complaints are more about the customer service than the hardware... well, if the hardware wasn't malfunctioning no one would be having to deal with thier customer service. My own Xbox had a controller fail the day I bought it. MS kindly replaced it without issue. Just before the warranty expired the red lights started flashing and MS "repaired" it without complaint. Two weeks after the reapir and the warranty expire the red lights were back and I refuse to pay them $140 to repair their repair. The point is, MS is NOT being honest about the magnitude the issue or in the way they are dealing with it. Their own statements and actions prove it.

look i thought about it and we could all fuck xbox back by going to wal-mart buying a new xbox 360 putting our broke xbox 360 in the box and returning it and getting our money back. wal mart is stupid enough they will take anything back without questioning so therefore walmart will just send them back and microsoft wont be getting any money. i dont think anybody planned on paying $400 for a refurbished unit get your money back by gettin a new unit and not refurbished, it may not sound legal or whatever but is selling a defective product legal?

So what now????
Posted: Dec 01, 2007 12:00AM PST by Triangleman
So who do I contact if customer service fails????? I sent my XBox in for repairs... They sent it back to me with a letter saying that it had been tampered with. When I took my XBox out of the box the XBox had a crack running up the back of it and pieces of plastic fell out into my hand. I assumed this had happened in shipping so I called the XBox repair center and explained what had happened and they flat out refused to fix it. I talked to the manager of the repair center and he refused to repair it as well saying only that "the decision had already been made and they will not fix it" so I called customer support and after two hours on the phone with several people customer support said "there is nothing they could do once the decision had been made by the repair center. I have had to deal with bad customer service before but this was horrible. I was only able to use my XBox for about 3 months before I got the red ring, then it sat for about 3 months before I sent it in. This is disgusting what a shoddy product M$ released then tried half heartedly to patch. It never made sense to me why anyone would stand up for what MS does, like it is a great feat of brilliance that they would extend their warranty on such a deplorable mistake on their part in the first place. At his point I am just going to pass the word around the internet to let people know to save their money and just get a Wii or even pay a little more and get a PS3, neither of which have any issues.

Ok so right now I am waiting for a box for my 4th 360 in 2 yrs. That's nuts. I got my first one a month after the release date. Then one day it was raining and I had a power surge and the internet got fired. Sent it in got a new one all was well. Maybe about a year later I rented a game and it killed my xbox ring of death and all. Called microsoft said my warrenty was up had to buy a brand new one. A week or two later they come out with the "We are extending the warrenty on all units for another year" come on what the fuck. Not even a year later ring of death. Now I wait for a box so I can send it out. justice has to be served b/c this is just not right at all

My Story
Posted: Oct 29, 2007 12:00AM PST by kuleyb
Hi Iâ??m Brandon, My brother got an xbox 360 in the January after the year of release. It broke withing 2 weeks of having it. He sent it back and got a new one in a week. Since the console was my brotherâ??s he was going to take it with him away to college. This brought up a dilemma of not having an Xbox 360 anymore, so I bought my first xbox 360 in August of 2006. It fared well until september of 2007. At this point my Xbox 360 was working, but had these green and yellow colors on parts of the screen. This continued for 2 weeks until later that september when the picture went completely out and showed nothing but a black screen with purple lines across. I called customer support and they told me that since it was 1 month out of warranty and didnâ??t show the three red lights of death I would have to pay 99$ to fix it! I was outraged. I reluctantly payed the fee and sent it in. Meanwhile my brother, on his second Xbox 360 was at college and his break also, his showed the three red lights. We both sent our Xbox 360â??s into the repair center. I received mine on October the 25, 2007 about 3-4 weeks after I got the box. No less than 48 hours later my refurbished Xbox 360 showed the 3 red lights of death. NO LESS THAN 2 DAYS THE NEW ONE BROKE!!!I call back microsoft on the October the 29th after waiting a couple days hoping it would fix itself. It didnâ??t. They are now sending me a coffin for my 2nd Xbox. Once I receive my new Xbox I will be on my third and my family will be on its 6th!!! Thats count them 1,2,3,4,5,6 Xbox 360â??s. Can you believe it! Microsoft used to be good with customer support but has started failing miserably. I am very upset. I own a Zune, 2 windows run computers, and more. This is how they treat their loyal fans! I hope Microsoft gets their act together because Iâ??m am starting to get angry. Of my six friends with Xbox 360â??s 4 of the 6 have broken. Thatâ??s 2/3s! Thanks a lot Microsoft.

Yeah I think 100% of the consoles are defective
Posted: May 26, 2010 12:00AM PST by heirdt
I have a launch 360 and was so proud of it, never gave me a problem, many people noticed it, we all thought I had "a good one" and they wanted to buy it from me, and I was soooo innocent, I simply said no 'cause I thought I was so lucky.
In january 2010 I was going to show off CoDMW2 to a friend and after a real time cut-scene when a soldier was killed and the blood just came out like ketchup, in that precise moment my Xbox 360 died, IRONIC HUH?. :( DAMN! it's not funny anymore hahaa
So I NATURALLY blamed my friend hahaha =)
.... but it didn't bring back my beloved console.
I am so pissed now, I'm running out of warranty and Microsoft is asking me mountains of money to repair my little one. I was thinking to buy a new 360 but damn, they all look the same, they all seem to fail soon or later!. So I'm waiting for the Xbox 360 Slim and give Microsoft a second and last chance for da good days the 360 gave to me.
I really like 360 games, but money is hard earned
and I dunno what the rest of the world thinks about this but with all respect my friends, buying a console more than twice is a total masochist behaviour. Why do you do that???????, I don't understand

360 fans are nothing, if not loyal. There is not a chance that I would go through 12 of ANY console. After my 3rd, I would demand my money back and if I was denied, I would raise 17 kinds of hell. I admire all the 360 fans out there that would put up with this garbage. I am on my almost-launch system which is still going strong. My only complaint is the ridiculous amount of noise the thing makes.

My brother's on 360 #3, but for all his bitching he'll likely keep sending it back as long as he hasn't found all the orbs in Crackdown. Sure, the consoles are about as sturdy as as a house of straw, but we little piggies keep coming back to the big bad wolf because, damn it, we're masochists and we like it like that. Grrrr, baby! (That, and because I STILL can't find a Wii ANYWHERE, nor afford a PS3...)

bandofbrotherz101 The general failures is heat related, but its more of a manufacturing flaw. Mine failed after 7 months. It was located in a cool area and so was my power brick thing. I had the new Intercooler installed as well. Its just a matter of time before any Xbox360 dies. So no dice on your comment...

I AM GOING THROUGHT HE SAME THING
Posted: Jun 30, 2007 12:00AM PST by Mr_Bricks
I bought my first 360 about 1 year and 2 months ago. It gave me the 4 red lights after 8 months of use. I then had to pay to send it back to get repaired and they sent me a refurbished one. Now after 4 months it has nothing but disc read errors. I called customer service and they said that I would have to pay over 50 dollars to get fixed again and receive another refurbished unit. I told them this was unacceptable and asked for a new one. I am now waiting to hear back from a Microsoft rep to see if they will approve it. Speaking as someone who works in the industry, I find this situation completely ridiculous. I have owned both an original Xbox and 360, and have been on Xbox Live for over 3 years. Hopefully they will do what is right and replace it with a new one. Otherwise I doubt I will buy another Microsoft product again and tell everyone I know and work with the same. As a side note my headset also does not work properly anymore, Other players only hear static when I talk. Microsoft, take responsibilty for your problems and fix them, it's good business and will help you keep customers. Zack O Forever Interactive.

I read off somewhere that leaving your xbox flat will reduce the chances of scratching, but the 360 will heat up faster. If u leave it standing, it will be more ventilated, but it will be more susceptible to scratching. I suggest leaving it flat but on top of two piles of game cases so it could be ventilated.

My Gamertag is real. GOOD OS my wifes S GodD OS and Stuckumss OS. I realize some people are not being honest so these are my families gamertags. I have 3 xbox 360's and again i have had to replace all of them. One of them broke a few days ago and i'm being charged 150.00 from m$ to replace it. The warranty ended a few weeks ago. I looked up the error code online and apparently it is a over heating problem. My system is sitting under a air conditioning vent it usually runs very well. My only problem is how loud the drive is. I hope i get my original box back i have tons of downloadable content that i travel with.

6 xbox 360's broken
Posted: Jun 29, 2007 12:00AM PST by GOD_OS
I have 3 systems networked at my house. I brought warranties from gamestop in case I had problems. All 3 boxes have been replaced by gamestop. Unfortunately they no longer sell warranties. They told me it was because microsoft extended their warranties, but that doesn't make sense. I don't think their program was profitable. If game stop started reporting broken returns that could hurt their business. People would wonder how reliable 360's really were. I have had every problem you can imagine with this system. Every system i've had starts to scratch my games. Most of the time i have to buy 3 copies of every game to play with my wife and son and most of my games are scatched within the first couple days.

INTERCOOLER FAN?
Posted: Jun 29, 2007 12:00AM PST by Ken716
Like i said before. I would like to know if the intercooler fan actually prevents overheating. Has anyone overheat their 360 while using the intercooler fan? I personally don't believe a simple fan can prevent the loud heat-making 360 from overheating. And if it does work, wouldn't it be extremely logical for one to inveat in getting one of these after their first xbox 360 overheated?

Mobile, Alabama to be exact, and my 9th system arrives today. I'm not a Sony fanboy, my 1up account is not new, and my gamertag (I Hate Midgets) is not fake. The picture in my profile is of the many faceplates and some of the boxes I've ended up with as a result of broken 360s, in case you need more than just my word. And my past console failures were well documented here in the 1up forums to boot. I just hope they didn't send me another broken refurb again.

I live in the countryside, and my electricity supply is less than stellar, especially with the regular and strong thunderstorms. I have three computes, a Wii, a 360, a PS2, and have had an XBOX and GameCube too. The one console to go wrong so far.... the Wii, which needed replacing. Oh though a couple of routers did burn out. No hitch from any of the others. So I guess all I can say for this poor fellow is... "unlucky!"

Your opinion does NOT count when you speak for other people. If that were the case anyone could make similar arguments. STUPID FANBOY!!! The price of loyalty
Posted: Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM PST by DragonOfChaos
I can't believe how loyal this guy is to Microsoft, and yet to me it sounds like they're treating his claims very lightly. You'd think Mr. Moneybags Gates would be seeing this and doing something to fix these problems, not just with the consoles themselves, but within his company. After all, this is his company, and problems like this lose customers, meaning loss of money. Honestly, I think the guy would be better off going with a PS3. At least there aren't any reports out on the damned thing breaking down and exploding on people. Also, I can't get over how bad fanboyism is these days! Whatever happened to the days where the biggest argument was over who was the better mascot, Mario or Sonic? Now, there's gamers that have to spew hate over one minor ill thing said about their favorite console. Makes me with I could go back to the SNES/Genesis days.

Let's Look For Solutions
Posted: Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM PST by Ken716
We are all fully aware of the 360's problems, but rather than complaining, look for solutions. After your second 360 breaking down, it is extremely logical to invest in getting an intercooler fan.I want to know if anyone here has had a console that broke(three red lights)even after they purchased the intercooler fan for it. I am also a victim of the overheating problem, and i am wondering if the intercooler fan is any good. I am not a fan of either companies, but empirically, xbox 360 games are more appealing to me at this time. It is just my style that I enjoy playing xbox games more.

Wii & Xbox 360 didn't make the cut - PS3 got the QB job now!
Posted: Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM PST by paul_bear_bryant
I read an article in Game Informer where Sony's executive, Phil Harrison, says no system has ever sold as fast as PS3. Not the Wii, not the Xbox 360, not the PS2. Nothing. Millions of defective systems didn't hurt PS2, but it will hurt 360 because of PS3 fanboys like me.

warranty changes..

MS had changed their warranty policy, simply to match Sony's policy on the PS3. The PS3 shipped out the door with a standard 1-year warranty..... The interesting thing.. I thought the PS3 was going to be the main suspect in hardware failure, not the 360....

This whole thing is amazing. But, if they are still doing it for free, then that's one REAL good thing. Now, to say you still want to play games using an XBox and so one, that is amazing because I would have given up at just thrown it on E-Bay by now. Man, it's stories like this that make me feel lucky, real lucky. I am surprised they haven't suggested using a power line regulator, although it's obviously not a power issue because you have everything else that needs power like that (PS3 comes to mind) going nuts as well. I hope that you get a working system, that keeps working.

Still loving my 360!
Posted: Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM PST by giantfoodmonster
I got my 1st from the Mt. Dew promo, Every10minutes. It lasted over a year with zero problems. Up until the Crackdown demo came out. My second was a refurb of a different box. I don't believe it was brand new, but it might have been. It didn't come in original packaging or anything. That broke at the time Crackdown itself came out. Now I am on my 3rd, which is actually just the 2nd one repaired. I love this box, games, and always being connected with my friends. I have 1 friend that is also on his 3rd. And another on his 2nd. For everyone but me, this was their 1st time gaming on the xbox platform. They all still love theirs. We all agree that customer service is good there, and some of them even got refund checks. I think their is a bigger problem than the admit. But at least the take care of their customers and the games / experience is superior.

Waiting for my 5th 360 since launch
Posted: Jun 28, 2007 12:00AM PST by Mystakill
After six weeks of waiting, I finally received a DOA refurb from the service center. Regardless of the problems with the non-English-speaking folks manning the "support" lines, the service center, hardware design, and poor manufacturing quality are the big problems here. The single biggest problem, however, is Microsoft's continue inability to admit that there's a widespread problem. The "dead pool" of refurbished 360s is growing bigger with each passing day. Sending me someone else's dead 360 does not fix the problem. Making a half-arsed fix that gets the 360 to boot up and shipped out, does not fix the problem. Fix the fundamental design, repair and service center flaws, and you'll have address *most* of this problem. You still need to fix/lose the defective-by-design DRM system; then we'll all be happy...

Bigger problem than PS2!
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by playamp3
The PS2 was a huge problem, but only if you played dvds in it. This is M$ rushing a product out to Beat a competitor to the market which their not used to doing. I just recently shipped out my 2nd 360 in 3 months. I live between Canton, Ohio & Alliance, Ohio. In Alliance they have one of the biggest Wal-Mart's in the country. A lot of little towns in the area all come to this Wal-Mart, so they have sold a lot of 360's. The UPS Store 2 minutes down the street where I've taken my 360 both times knew what I had before I walked up to the counter. they had 3 other consoles come in today along with mine. The lady I talked to said they get at LEAST 3 360's IN A WEEK! I think 1UP should question UPS to see how many 360 the ship to the Texas building to get fixed.

This is not NEW
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by xbox360recall.net
When my very first xbox 360 died, I purchased the extended warranty. I am insured up until 2009. What you are reporting is not new. And, I will tell you this. Microsoft did not GIVE US THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY. We, the consumers who had fallen victim to the crappy 90 day warranty made so much noise, that Microsoft HAD TO DO SOME THING IN THE PUBLIC EYE. It is called makign concessions. Kinda like, behind the scenes putting new hardware in the 360, but not willing to admit it. They are doing anything they can to keep from having to RECALL ALL XBOX 360s. I do say, the warranty is good, the price of the extended warranty is great, the service is professional and somewhat timely, however, the fact remains... the 360 is defective design or manufacturing. http://www.xbox360defective.com PS. The 360 rocks, when it is working. You just need to buy 2, 1 to play, 1 to sit at the repair center.

-
IMPORTANT: Xbox 360 owners should read this New Extended Warranty information!
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by John_Gamer
IMPORTANT: Microsoft now has a NEW Insurance Policy Extended Warranty in place for the Xbox 360. It is the best one offered for ANY videogame system. Read below for more information I read in an article and confirmed: The Xbox 360 starts out with a very nice free one-year warranty where Microsoft pays for any and all expenses if any sort of technical defect occurs within the first year. As far as the new insurance policy from Microsoft goes, it is actually quite a good one. Insurance that extends warranties is something that is very important for all types of electronics and videogame systems. It is a very good idea to buy insurance on any and all forms of electronics, including videogame systems. The insurance policy Microsoft now offers really is a nice one that benefits the consumers more than anyone else. It is not the sort of overpriced insurance policy that overcharges consumers, and it is not something Microsoft is going to make money on. Xbox 360 now starts out with an excellent free one-year warranty where Microsoft pays for any and all expenses if any sort of technical defect occurs within the first year. Microsoft now has a policy in place where you can buy an extra year of insurance that fully covers all costs for only $24.95. You can buy two years for $49.90, but there isn't any need to buy two years all at once. Microsoft makes it clear that as long as your system is covered by any type of warranty or insurance you can keep on extending your insurance. Theoretically, you could cover your system for over a decade or longer if you wanted to. I agree with an article I read that said it is best to keep buying a nicely priced $24.95 year of insurance each time the policy is about to expire. That way you could be insured as long as you own your system no matter how long you want to keep on insuring it. Many places that sell insurance on videogame systems have insurance policies that run out and expire after 3 years, and then leave you hanging. This extended warranty now offered by Microsoft is not like that; it does not just expire after several years, and then leave you hanging when the system is older and the consumer is most vulnerable to time-related defects. I think this inexpensive plan offered by Microsoft is nicely designed to benefit the consumer, because it puts you in a position where you do not need to buy insurance at all when you first get your system; it lets you spend your money on games. After you buy your system, you just need to make sure to extend your warranty for the cost of $24.95 before the free one-year warranty on your Xbox 360 runs out. This new insurance plan really is by far the best extended warranty insurance plan that any of the videogame manufacturers offer. You can talk all day about how it would be better if we did not need to ever use a warranty or an insurance plan. But, this is the real world, and anyone who does not buy an extended warranty insurance policy on a $400 Xbox 360 or a $600 Playstation 3 is a fool. This new extended warranty insurance policy of Microsoft is FAR better than the one offered by Sony for the Playstation 3, and it is FAR better than the ones offered by most retailers. If you want to become part of this new Extended Warranty Insurance Policy, just call the standard number of 1-800-4MY-XBOX and tell the person on the phone. It will only take a few minutes, and then you have absolutely no risk of owning a system without a warranty.

Just wanted to mention how much the PS3 owns the 360. Yes I am a Sony fanboy but if I had 2 or 3 PS3s break I would not buy from them anymore. As it is though, all of my Sony systems have lasted for a long time. I still have a PS1 and PS2, both of which I played constantly and still work fine!

It will only take a few minutes, and then you have absolutely no risk of owning a system without a warranty.

other thing about repeat issues...
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by da_bahstid
I bet a lot of the repeats are problems with MS's service people/system. The only problem I've had with Xbox was last gen with a controller (one of about 13); when I sent it back it came back DOA. I wonder if a lot of these 360s are getting second-rate fixes and the shipping and handling is probably pretty abusive as well.

Ridiculous
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by TheMadTitan
What I want to know is why is the media just now jumping on this problem? Anybody who's been keeping up with this knows that this has been a problem for quite some time, especially when gaming sites and developers have said that several of their 360 units have died on them. This is ridiculous and something needs to be done about this before Microsoft realizes that their entire fanbase vanished and bought a more expensive PS3. At least with the PS3 there's little fear of it dying, unlike Microsoft's shoddy ass console. Nothing I just spent $400, minus the cost of the games I own, should break down in four months. Nothing. My NES still runs strong, why can't my 360?

wait but what does the red rings mean actually?!?
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by sunny_chao
internal parts melting from the heat? maybe a time bomb set to randomly explode inside the 360 to cheat those to without warranty? who knows! all i know is that there is something REALLY wrong with the design of the 360 hardware because i got the rings of death for no reason one night when i turned it on.

I have waited on buying a 360 because I know quite a few people who have had system failures, but at the same time I know a lot of people who have never had any problems (I work in a game store). Personally, I will have one by the end of the year. For the record, the only game systems I have ever had any problems with were my Playstation and my Playstation 2. That is why I won't buy a PS3 for anything more than $250, even if it does eventually get good games. Sony does not make a quality product. But aparantly neither does Microsoft.

About right
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by WickedAshtray
For the record I think MS is attempting to do the right thing but when people start going on multiple console malfunctions it speaks of a design issue and not simply something to slap a band-aid on. Also, ya gotta love how PR tries to turn around and make a negative out of a positive by stating that they aren't giving new systems to allow people to save their settings and game saves. They make you remove the hard drive before you ship it anyhow....lol. My contempt for spineless white collar tools knows no bounds.

Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by joeyatog
My N64 took a crap after two weeks, I brought it back to Toys-R-Us and they gave me a new one. Never any problems with my: NES, Original Gameboy, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, or Gamecube. I had a SNES, Genesis, and an Xbox all succumb to a terribly-wired house and shorted out on me but I don't consider these to be the faults of the consoles themselves.

WTF was he doing with these 360s? Where is he putting them?

Boo hoo for me. My 360 got three flashing red lights a week AFTER my warranty lapsed. Talk about shit luck. If I wasn't such an optimist (or dummy), I would've renewed my warranty before the anniversary of my purchase. Then again, when you pay 400 bucks, it's NOT SUPPOSED TO CRASH AFTER ONE YEAR!!!!

My second 360 refurb lasted a grand total of 2 weeks! I missed the first week of the Halo 3 Beta and the last 4 days as well. There's is nothing game-wise going on with the PS3 so I'm not switching anytime soon.

I wouldn't mind if it broke down every few months.............
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by mjrgamer
but they better have a technician that can fix it the same day and within an hour of it breaking. I shouldn't have to wait and send it in and wait for it to come back. Every game store should have a technician since 360's have problems often that come to your house and fix it for free. It's not the consumers fault that the console fails every now and then. Time for a massive recall of all 360's so Microsoft can get it right and get on the right track. :)

Why non-fanboys are smarter:
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by da_bahstid
Everybody just has to realize that MS and Sony are both large companies, and very few companies get that large without shortchanging customers somewhere. Sony's PS2 had reliability issues last gen, this gen it's MS's turn. No big surprise really. Good work Bionic Snake for thinking things through and figuring out where the issue was. I like many have never had an issue with my 360 so far. I'm beginning to wonder how much of the problem IS about user-specific circumstance. Are the people having several breakdowns living in hotter/more humid climates, playing certain games that could be more taxing on the CPUs, playing above a certain number of hours a day, leaving them in poorly venitlated conditions, etc? Not that those things would be an excuse for MS to not take responsibility, but knowing these things would help isolate where the issues really are, because I bet if they could isolate it they could make the issue go away with less than $5/unit in production costs. MS's unwillingness to acknowledge the issue hurts them in more ways than just making themselves look unresponsible.

Where does he keep it?
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by Betrunken_Affe
Im just thinking that if he's gone through 11, its probably something that he's doing thats causing the problem. Its widely known that 360s create a lot of heat, and that heat needs to go somewhere. If he has it in a poorly ventilated volume with a decent thermal resistance, I would expect him to kill everyone he gets. Im just kinda surprised that nowhere Ive read does it mention on the characteristics of the atmosphere where he keeps it. PS, I have a launch 360, keep it in a very well ventilated location and have never had any problems. (knock on wood)

Seriously, we know these problems are around. Has anyone out there tried over hearing the console when you get the red lights? Search it if you can, may save you a few 360's. Yes, Microsoft has made mistakes, so does every console. Wii had a problem with the wrist strap if anyone remebers.PS3 had a problem with either price, or emulating games on their "perfect emulation". No console has ever come out that dosn't have problems. My point, Microsoft isn't going to admite a mistake, but neither will other companies that screw up like that either. I'm still going strong with mine and I'm not a fanboy

Maybe Microsoft is waiting for a silent majority of 360 owner to get pissed off before they fix the design of the 360. It's hard to believe they haven't taken care of this yet. If the PS3 was having these problems everyone on the internet would have ripped Sony a new one. Maybe the it cost an extra $200 to make a console that doesn't have a 25-30% failure rate.

I'm on my fourth 360 since launch and have experienced different problems with each of my replaced system except for the fact that they all failed within 8 months or less. My first one lasted 3 days after launch. I too enjoy my 360's and the games but I think there is a problem with the hardware that needs to be addressed. I can say that just about everyone I know that owns a 360 has had at least one go bad. I think the failure rate is much higher than Microsoft is letting on. Just text everyone on your friends list and ask them if they have had one fail and I would be surprised if that number was zero.

My 360 busted once. They sent me a repaired unit, but the tray wouldn't open. My guess is the box was dropped in transit or something, cuz M$ only sent it back in a box with no padding. gay. but the unit i've got now works great, sent WITH PADDING. YAY. if this guy has this many problems, he needs to stop fucking it up, or get a new power box on his house, or stop playing during lighting storms or something. it's statistically impossible for him to have this many units. something is his fault. guaranteed.

I am on my second 360. My friends that I game with locally are, with 1 exception, all on their second 360. I got my first 360 on the first day of release. Because of all of the issues I heard that day, I have a 9" house fan on the power supply and often use a 14" house fan near the console itself. I make up for the noise by turning the volume on everything up :-). It should not be necessary for me to use this much cooling, but I do not want to have to deal with being without my games. The 360 requires too much care to be in general use. They should scrap the current form factor and make something a little tougher. I do not use these fans on any other system, including my PS3.

i own 2 360s, one that was a launch purchase and another that i bought in march 06. i have never had a problem with my launch 360 (knock on wood) but the 360 that i purchased in march 06 had to be sent back 3 times. the first time it was the ring of death. i sent it in and they sent it back repaired. the second time, it started as a disc read error and then upgraded to the ring of death. sent in for repair, sent back repaired. both times i got the same system back with the same problem. third time, i got the ring of death yet again but figured that if i'm getting the same problem with the same console every time, then maybe its not the console. they always tell you to send the bare console, no hard drive and no cords. when i called MS about the third problem, i suggested that they look into the power supply because the systems were being fixed and would work when i got them back, its just that shortly after getting it back i would get the ring. the only thing that remained the same and in my posession was the power supply. when i told the rep my thoughts about it, he shipped me a new power supply right away and i was instructed to send my system and the old power supply, which i did. they sent me the same original system that i purchased in march 06 and wouldn't you know it, the system has been perfect ever since going on 7 months now. the point of this post is to inform other owners to do some troubleshooting themselves and not always take what a rep says as "the word". if i had just sent in my system without thinking about the power supply like i was originally told to do, i would have ended up sending it right back maybe 4-5 more times by now. the repair reps are only human and can over look certain signs of trouble because they are trained to troubleshoot a certain way. and for the record, i have been lucky enough to have some really kool repair reps working on this with me so mad props go out to the 360 reps.

for all of those that are experiencing problems, request a new power supply before it goes bad again. there is no sense in hooking up a new power supply to a system that already has the rings of death.

Microsoft Made me do it!
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by 3wayfanboy
As you can tell from my previous blog comments I have been fully behind the Xbox360 and very scared of the PS3 price tag and what it could do to the industry. While I still can not keep up with the large amount of awesome games comming out for the Xbox360, Microsoft themselves have totaly shakin my support for them. Here is what happened. I have 2 Xbox360's. 1 I bought on launch day for my living room and 1 I bought 6 months later for my game room. The one in my game room is hooked to the internet and I keep it updated and the other I just pop in a game when I want to play. Well everything has been going well and I turned on my system in the game room to play and it asked me to do the update so I did just as I have done in the past. Then as soon as the updated was done and the system restarted it went right straight to the 3 red lights ring of death! Now I have heard alot of people on the internet talking about how a update bricked their systems. I never really fully believed it until it happened to me. Now there was absolutly nothing wrong with my system before the update so it was definately the update that killed my 360. Ok they goofed up I'll contact them and get them to resolve this problem that they caused for my system I thought. I was WRONG! They took no responsibility for what the update did to my system. They told me that it would cost me $150 plus shipping and handling for them to fix my system that they killed. I cannot believe that they have the nerve to brick a system that I have already paid $400 for and then charge me a total of $165.00 to fix their fuck up! This is 100% unacceptable! I told them right then and there that if they did not take responsability for their error, or what ever you would call it, that I would sell my bricked system to a repair shop for $150.00 and then take the $165.00 that they were trying to charge me to fix it and put it towards the purchase of a PS3! Needless to say they fucked me so I said fuck them and the next day I took the $150 that I got from the repair shop and the $165 that they were going to charge me to fix THEIR mistake and put it towards the purchase of a PS3! So like I said Microsoft made me do it!

I called several times and finally they sent another box about two weeks ago and when I got it, I sent my xbox the next day. It's been eight days and I still havent got any contact regarding the repair of my xbox. I just hope I will never have to go through this again. =(

Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by geeknik
While I haven't had to endure 11 or 12 repairs, I just received my 4th replacement console. My first one died 27 days after I bought it new(red rings of death), but I took it back to EB Games rather then deal with M$. Then I had to send in the console for a heat related problem, then the DVD drive died, and now, the refurb I just got back last week, has no working fans at the rear of the console, so I'm going to have to send it back in. *AGAIN* And the guy at Xbox Management that's been talking to me, says I cannot get a new console. I bet I get a new one now. =)

All of them had the 3 red lights but this one was special. I got the "Unreadable Disc Error" message and then the system started making this grinding sound.

YEs rally that is life, your life letting a corporation with too much money fuck you in the face when in reality the PS2 and Xbox1 aren't remotely comparable to this shit. Advanced tech??? It's a DVD9 drive the PS3 uses more advanced tech than this and all has been calm. So yes electronics break and it's all good, just not 12 times b4 Microsoft has to sit up and take notice to their face fucking.

Yes there is stupid people out there. Explain to me how someone is intelligent enough to call tech support about thier computer not working and come to find out the computer is unplugged. This is why if your into fixing computers, electronics, etc.. they say to ALWAYS make sure to check for the obvious.

With each nexr gen cosole comes the same old unwillingness of these companies to admit their machines have a problem. Why can't they just say, hey we fucked something up in the design and or manufacturing process. Admiting the problem would give me more confidence in the brand than denial of the issue.

I myself am on my first Xbox360, but I have five friends who game just as much maybe more than I do. Out of those numbers 2 of them have had to send in their 360s' for repairs and one had to send in his power adapter for a replacement. From this very tiny cross section thats about 40% failur rate. Problem......I think so.

after that many consoles, i think i would have some negative feelings towards Microsoft.. i certainly have bad feelings about them with regards to their Windows OS.. but regardless, ive never owned an Xbox360.. my original Xbox, while bought 2nd hand, works fairly well.. tho one game simply wont play.. and its not scratched up at all, so, thats a negative.. i went thru one PS2, bought just 3 months after launch.. but eventually, started getting disk read errors.. of course, i never used any disk lens cleaners, and considering i lived in arizona for most of that PS2s life, i can imagine the dust didnt take kindly the the PS2.. but i bought a slim model and that one works fine.. had 2 PS1s, but the first one, had some disk read errors and then it fell on the floor.. didnt work after that.. so sent it to Sony and they fixed it.. worked fine afterwords.. but bought a new one at some point and sold the old one(still working).. and thats my history, to this point.. my PS3 works just fine.. had it since February 07..

Ventilation is not the reason these problems exist. The guy in the article had the wiring in his entire house looked at, you don't think he was intelligent enough not to trap the thing in a cabinet? You are one of the lucky ones that got a good console, it's not because you're any smarter with your electronics than any of the rest of us. Mine sits on top of the entertainment center with plenty of air flow, and it still red ringed. Also, it is a console and should have been designed better. I was able to place my Wii anywhere and not worry about it, and I hear the same for the PS3. MS wanted to cut costs on production, and now the consumer pays the price.

I'm sick of dumbasses on the message boards claiming that others are 'making it up' when their consoles crap out. I love my 360, but it's got major issues. It's really frustrating that MS still won't admit to a hardware issue. Customer service isn't the problem. The fact that I have to call them at all is a major problem. Vocal minority my ass.

HEAT,HEAT,HEAT,HEAT
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by lkajdflkja
HEAT,HEAT,HEAT,HEAT will kill electronics really quick. I agree 100%, did I say 100%, with Semjaza. I have had my 360 for over a year now and haven't had any problems, knock on some wood. I have it sitting out in the opening and not inside a cabnit. I think people are not allowing proper airflow for the 360 which causes it to overheat and then it gets fried. I'm not saying this explains everything but probably a good portion.

Vocal Minority...
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by [email protected]
...more like vocal majority. Okay, maybe not that bad but still. I read all the flames against people who post about their RRoDs. A) I'm not 12 year old and have my 360 under a pile of dirty clothes. B) my 360 hasn't been locked away in a sealed A/V cabinet C) I don't play 24/7. I'm 35 years old and been a gamer as far back as I can remember. I have alot of electronics gear and I know how to properly take care of it all. I bought mine at launch and I'm on my 4th console. Everytime I've had to send mine in its been a clusterf*ck of epic proportions. Service never seems to have a clue what the hell is going on and you end the call with the feeling that you know more about the product then they do...which is probably correct. No way am I buying the 3-5% failure rate. I work in a professional corporate environment and have several friends that are my age who are avid gamers. Out of the six of us who are regular 360 gamers only one of us has avoided a service request. The other five of us have had a total of 12 replacements and each of us hold our breath everytime we fire up our systems. M$ has had two freaking years to get their shit together to no avail. I would love to have someone leak the final number of returned consoles at the end of the 360s cycle. I'm sure it'd be shocking. I'm still a big 360 fan and enjoy the system, games, and XBL service. It offers everything I'm looking for in my gaming and entertainment experience except...reliability. <a href="http://nexgenwars.com/"><img src="http://nexgenwars.com/images/x360_forum2.jpg" width="398" height="25" alt="nexgenwars.com" border="0" /></a><a href="http://profile.mygamercard.net/dastuph"> <img src="http://card.mygamercard.net/gbar/360/dastuph.gif" border=0></a>

I have at least 7 friends who lined up that first day to get 360's and (yup thats right) none of em have broken. I put the blame on the user, stop putting your 360 in that entertainment cabinet next to you dvd player and ps3!!! It gets hot and It will explode! Come on...12 xboxs and your still breaking them!? Obviously its a user issue and for ANYONE who believe otherwise at this point is a FOOL. -j

Worse than PS2 was?
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by larryface
Third key at a gamestop and I own a 360 as well. Mine is currently with microsoft because it broke, and I seriously have an average of about 1.5 broken xbox 360's every day from customers. Of course, we've had two broken display units as well.. What irks me the most is that Microsoft doesn't admit this huge problem exists and keeps insisting it's a "vocal minority." They are happy to collect your $140 once your xbox goes out of warrenty in order to "fix" it. If yours does break, mine did a month and a half after warrenty, keep arguing until they lower the price of their fix. Got them to give me a 50% discount is all, but that's still $70 more in my pocket. If it breaks again, I'm done with 'em. Good luck.

I am on my 2nd 360, red lights, now the tray thing is going on I have to leave a game inside or it will not open. But I had 5 ps1's and 3 ps3's so I cant say sony is any better. The only system I never had problems with where nintendo and sega. I hate sony and microsoft, but I love games so gotta live with it I guess. I wont buy a ps3 until its been out a year to see if they finally got it right, they say 3rd time is a charm. And the failure rate is bad. out of the 14 people I know that have the 360 only 2 have the original system.

I have no doubt that Xbox 360s screw up and I'm sure the number is relatively high considering the amount of complaints... at the same time, in many cases (definitely not all) you're never told anything about how they cared for the system. I'm sure these people aren't running it on the carpet, but is there plenty of room in the back? Is it being suffocated by other hot running devices? Is the power brick not on a carpet? It's just odd to me that I know, personally, over a dozen people with the system who have never had a problem (and have their system well ventilated, mind you) and then there are people who are on their fourth. Forgive me for being somewhat skeptical of some of the more outlandish reports... Considering there are people out there that will lie about this stuff, particularly on the Internet, it's just impossible to gauge what these numbers actually are. Some people skew it to as high as 30%, but I don't know. I think, like anyone, I wish MS would just admit the issue and fix it.

I didn't know the failure rate was that bad, i was thinking of getting one but now I'll wait for the great fall games for the ps3 even though im on my third one now. But i guess thats because the power bar i plug it into had charged ground wire because it was rubbing another wire. i didn't know that was the problem until i got my third ps3 and i tested the power bar by plugging another power bar in (which had a ground). The power bar promptly exploded (literally it popped my ears). I then rewired the house and its fine now. I had the power bar for like 10 years and managed to not plug anything with a ground in, luckily it was only the $600 ps3 and not a toaster or something crucial like that.

Are you paying anything for repaires, or even shipping? I'm just curious. When my PS2 that I got on launch day (Oct 2000) stopped reading some discs in 04, I called Sony, and they paid for everything, even though I was far out of warrenty. They replaced the motor, the drive door, the laser, and installed the new, quieter fan, and shipped it back, within 10 days, for absoloutly no cost. And they gave me a new warrenty to boot.

As much as I love Microsoft the failure rate is ridiculous, but I see this as a problem with the industry as a whole. I've been burned by Microsoft (2x) and by Sony I had 4 PS2's... Unfortunately for us to play the games we love we had to deal with the systems they are on good or bad. Right now Microsoft has the games I love to play and the best online no doubt, so if I want to play games I have to purchase a warranty to make sure I can still do so. If I have to quit it will be a sad day because Sony doesn't do it for me anymore.

I hate calling people out but I have to address self righteous bullshit mongers when I come across them. I too had ONE PS2 break down on me...2 years after I bought it, you know what happened I called Sony, mentioned a dirty disc error, tried all of their fix-it-yourself suggestions and when they didn't work they SENT ME A NEW ONE. People always complain about Sony being dishonest to customers, but I've never had a customer complaint to them that didn't resolve my issue permanently or resulted in new hardware...and I have alotta Sony shit. But this isn't about which company has better customer support, its about hardware we own being reliable. Don't tell me half of the complaints are untrue because it undermines people like myself who actually had 360 issues. What you think can't change the fact that MS is working hard to bury this issue. You wanna talk "people I know", well I have three close friends who I lan with on our 360s on the regular. We have all had multiple consoles. Granted we live in a hotter climate, so we chalk up most of the hardware failure to heat stress, but COME ON, its obvious something is wrong. I don't want to suggest anyone switch from one console to the next, personally I put a shit load of money into my 360 setup and I want to enjoy it, simple as that.

Yup on my 2nd
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by Calel
Got the red ring about 7-8 months ago I think. I looked up what the flashing patterns actually mean (information not formally provided by MS but verified empirically from console owners) and it was most likely the gpu had come unstuck from the board. This was before MS changed their warranty so I had to buy a new one. This time around I paid for the Best Buy 2 year replacement just to avoid Justin's hassles. But as a result I'm uber-paranoid about my unit. I play with it only in the erect position (he-he...erect unit) and with a fan pointed at the back to maximize air circulation. Even then I'm not on it for more than 2 hours at a time. This shit IS a problem, and MS is trying to spin their way out of a recall.

lucky number four
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by ericbock
I just got my fourth Xbox 360 from Microsoft on Monday. I'll have to wait and see if this one lasts longer than the others (my record is around four months so far). Ideally this one will have the new GPU heatsink. I'm currently invested enough in the 360 that I don't know if I have any other options than to repeatedly send it in for repair. With this latest repair Microsoft assigned a rep to me who's been checking the status along the way (it shipped, did you get it?, etc.) and has actually compensated me with a game. That matters less to me than actually having a working system though. I want to be online playing with my friends. When my Xbox has been broken 20% of the time I've owned it I become really frustrated. I'd recommend that anyone considering a 360 should wait until Microsoft introduces a redesigned console (the 65nm chips). Until then you're pretty much asking for problems.

I got tired after the 3rd
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by Omen9405
after my 3rd refurb console I sold that one to get a new one at best buy with a 2yr warranty which gets me a new console back rather than a refurb and it will returned as a voucher not a console so I can go to any best buy and get a new one (core, premium, or an elite) or just plane out get something else for the price that I payed for the 360. But at least under that warranty(best buy) I have a choice, Rather than staying stuck with console that kept coming back to me half ass fixed and no explanation as to why can I get for so much money that i paid a good working console.

Just because you haven't had a problem doesn't make this story any less true. I'm on my third 360, I can verify that they're crap, although the games are awesome. I bought the first 360 at Wal-Mart, returned it THAT SAME NIGHT for another one, RETURNED THAT ONE THE SAME NIGHT TOO, and finally got a working one. There's something wrong with the way they make that machine.

Minor Problems Not Sent In

Don't forget the minor problems 360 owners have that they don't report or send in for repair. Like I have a problem with the tray opening. I always have to mess with it for a minute or two before the damn tray will open. I bet thousands of other users have this problem.

Microsoft Sucks
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by xmanofstle
I'm on 360 number 5 since August of 2006. Screw their customer service. After 2 bad experiences with them on the phone, both times they actually expected me to pay for shipping back to them a damaged console less than 2 weeks old, I won't even bother calling them. I buy my systems from Target and Walmart, any problems I go back to buy another system, swap the boxes, and then return the defective unit. Let Microsoft get stuck with them when the stores send them back. Ive worked in manufacturing and any number greater than a 4% defective rate is a serious problem and I would bet all the money in the world Microsoft is on at least a 10% rate with their 360. Thats not just appalling, its criminal. Until I bought my 360 I never had to return a system to a store that was defective, let alone multiple times. Its a shame that the games on it are so good.

and I admit customer service was great. My complaints (which I made them very aware of) were that I got a refurb back (this was shortly after they said most customers would get their original back) and the condition the box was in when it arrived on my doorstep was unacceptable. The box looked like someone tried to beat a litter of kittens to death inside before sticking my 360 in it. I don't think either of those was worth the measly free month of live they pasted to the system (I'm paid up through 2009, thanks Target clearance).

half of the article about the 360 breaking down is false
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by GodOfThunder107
i bought 2 360 at launch and 6 of my friends bought 1 each and i play with over 20 people online all the time and not 1 of us had a single problem with our 360.but i bought 4 ps2s in lest then 3 years and you never head me saying it online. i read an article a while back that said about half of the post about the 360 breaking down is false. For example like this article here, people with common since knows that this is just a sony fanboy trying to get people to buy the ps3 because of its disappointing sales figures.i read articles that was even more redicules then this if people could belive it foe example i read an article wher a sony fanboy said that he was playing his 360 and it stop working all of a sudden and didn't know why so he hit the eject button but it didn't work so he pryed it open and to his surprise the game was melted all over so he bought it back and bought a ps3 and never had a lick of trouble with it so he recomends that people buy a ps3 instead of a 360 but if you have any common since you will know how hard it is to melt a dvd and before this will happen the system will shut down or it will catch on fire and this is fact. I have 1 friend that bought a ps3 and it burned up in less then a month and he is always writing articles about the 360 being crap and breaking down all the time but he never mentioned about his ps3 when it burned up as a matter of fact if it wasn't for his wife telling me i never would have known about it Like i said about half of the articles about the 360 breaking down is crap, all it is is a bunch of sony fanboys lieing and trying to get people to buy the ps3 because of it's disappointing sales figures that's why sony is laying off people all over the world in it's game division because of right now sony will lose over 450 million in its game division this year unlike the 360 wich will make money a few years ahead of schedule

Xbox fan boys were always complaining about the PS2 being faulty. But at least they don't have to replace them 2 or 3 times...or 11 in this case. That's just unacceptable in my opinion. Not to mention if MS has to make so many repairs and/or replace systems, the 360 is going to be run into the ground and probably cease to exist altogether. If that all-mighty profit margin isn't high enough, bye bye 360.

good games?
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by CoffinWaiter
The Sony fanboys posting here make me want to vomit all down the front of my "We miss you Ken Kutaragi" t-shirt. I had a 360 die on me. I was very angry with M$ in my knowledge that many people have had their 360(s) die and then suffered through shitty customer service to get it repaired. But my anger has been out weighed by the fact that the 360 has the games and the PS3 has nothing. I finished the main quest in Oblivion months before it came out for the PS3. If the price comes down and once the good games start to hit I might consider a ps3... but until then I'll be playing Bioshock biotch!

Sounds like just bad luck. The probaility of haveing that many bad systems in a row is a highly unlikely. I think it's on the part of the bad karma that comes with owning a PS3 also, it's my firm opinion that the other systems are attacking it at night cuz they're jelious of the 360s' greatness. I've never had any problems with any of my systems and I've had them since they came out.

360
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by JJLopez117
I work at a local video game store and we repair 360s and this is a very big issue. I'd say 80% of them have the red lights and with the people I talk to alot of them say that they have been through this before. But, we also work on PS2's and there is a ALOT more of them coming in than 360s but that just could because of the popularity of the system. I myself, have had the red lights and Microsoft sent me a refurbished console and it works fine (So far). I havent checked for heat sinks yet (and probably wont). I just hope that it doesnt crap out like the last one did.

why renew?

people complain about where the games are go out and buy one of the more reliable systems and devs will start putting the games there... its simple logic i do feel sorry for him but at 11 he should really start seeing that he is helping microsoft cheat there way to "victory". i havent yet got one of the new systems but played on a 360 with no problems. First time i touched a wii the controllers lost contact with the sensor

I went through like 10 ps2's but nobody fails to mention that. The only reason other than gta that sony did well oh and their biggest competitor n64 and saturn oooh scary. the ps3 to me is a cheap blue ray player for now and i don't know if i can wait ten years till they get it right so i will continue with microsoft until something better comes along. I am on my 3rd frustrating yes but i am a gamer so i am willing to suck it up as my failure for buying a launch system anyways. Launch systems have always usually failed.

Why???
Posted: Jun 27, 2007 12:00AM PST by ManaKnight
Why do you all continue to support MS consoles when they break down so much?? Despite me being a big PlayStation fan (yes, I'm admitting it now) and always enjoying the PlayStation experience, if I had to replace one of my PlayStation consoles/handhelds twice (meaning on my third), within 4 years, I'd be really ticked off and would drop the PlayStation brand instantly. I was a big fan of the original Xbox at launch, but since it gave me problems and I have to replace my console a 2nd time, I just gave up and went back to PlayStation. I gave MS another chance with the 360, but after getting the red ring of death and having problems with my 2nd 360 (which is now out of warranty, so if it breaks, I'm screwed), I just said forget it and about a PS3 (don't regret it one bit). If my 360 dies again, I'm selling off all my 360 stuff and buying a Wii.

I have had my 360 break in me 4 times. The last time they told me i had to pay to fix it.This is a big problem. I know in the small town i live in over half of the people who have a 360s have had to send them in for repair.Fessup MS you fucked up shipping early.Your lead in console sales is going down with every broken system.Next time mine goes it gettin traded with my 15 games for a ps3.

The PS3 definitely owns. I've not heard about a single PS3 messing up so far. I have one that I bought at launch and it still works perfectly. Man, too bad I didn't get the Xbox 360 that you have to send in every month or so....

Good read. I mentioned it in my blog. I like the attention this situation is getting. You almost feel helpless as the consumer against Microsoft the giant. But luckily, in the end, most of us end up with a working 360. Though, I'd like to see down the road if Microsoft makes any more detailed comments on the situation.

Good article Phill! If only MS would come out and say "look, see, it's a minority, 20,000 out of 10,000,000 have had problems" but instead they just refuse to state numbers. Makes me think it is high, not crazy like 50% or that high, but it's quite high. Maybe moisture and temperature have something to do with it?

Ive had my 360 for around 15 months now and i havent experience any major flaws in it, the occasional freeze, which has gradually lessened in frequency, and i one got 3 red lights... but i feel quite safe in blaming th thunder storm that was happening at the time. All i can say is its great this guy still believes in Microsoft and isn't some sony fanboy criticizing Microsoft, he's just an unlucky fellow. So my 360 is still going strong with what i'd equate to zero issues with it, and ive had it running hot in some pretty harsh Australian heat.

Wow, I had the same problem with my regular Xbox. I went through three of them. My first one was pre-onwed, and the DVD drive went on it. The second one had a electrical malfunction and didn't even boot up when it turned it on, and my third one is just starting to not read certain portions of disks. I've just ventured in buying an Xbox 360 a less than a day ago, and hopefully I won't run into the same problems with it. Microsoft should own up to their problems and stop avoiding them. They need to realize that nothing is perfect. And as for the records of hardware malfunctions, what the hell happened to the freedom of information act? [courtsey of Richard Nixon]

Not only 360s
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by ZeroDawg2k3
But a number of Wii's are having an apparent motherboard issue. Mine is currently on its way back to Nintendo to get serviced but I was told it was a known issue. I haven't heard of anything as so numerous as the 360 failures, but other consoles are having their share of it too.

The Service line sucks ass, hell they hung up on me. What you have to do to make sure you cover your ass to insure the piece of crap at best buy and every time it breaks down drop another 50 on the thing to cover your but. I think every time you get the rings of death and every owner of the White Piece of Shit will get Microsoft should give you a free game. Hell I thought the PS2 was made like shit we have a new Leader in the White Box.

Refurbished?
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by no_talent
I think a lot of the repeat broken consoles are due to Microsoft's policy of shipping out refurbished units. I'm still on my first one which I've had for about 1 year and 4 months with no problems. If it did break, I'd be unhappy getting a refurbished unit, I'd rather pay for a new unit. Microsoft needs to fix this policy soon. I'm sure Microsoft has failure rates of new consoles versus refurbished, act on it. Justin is definitely a trooper.

I really feel bad for this guy. My 360 died about a week for my birthday and it totally sucks. I called the customer service number gave me some jive speech about how I shouldn't look at it as a bad thing. The lady told me that the good news was that if I paid to have it repaired they would extend my warranty. I still haven't fixed my system and have missed out on some very cool games. Customers shouldn't be treated like garbage.

well
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by ReDS1X
Mine is still okay and it's the first one. Overheating is the only problem, so I purchase those additional fans to quick cool that console (both at some point, it's more like blocking the ventalation even more). Still this Justin dude sound a bit like the Postal Dude.

Yes they are dying by themselves.
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by Kapoof
You people who don't believe the system just dies, believe it! There is a design flaw or two in the hardware. I played mine somewhat casually, did all you could ask to keep it working fine... dead. Same with my second one. I know it sounds ridiculous and hard to believe. Well, it is! It's frickin' unbelievable that MS would launch this thing in such a rush to beat Sony to the market, then try to cover the hardware failures up. At this point, they should be open about it and fix everyone's for free. They're only killing themselves here by being so shady about it.

hardware
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by Sephiroth Sin
what good are the games if you cant play it? freaking shoddy hardware and you guys are still paying to buy a new one that WILL break again. xbox fanboys are quick to say $599, but what are you actually paying with all your broken 360's? Hope that warranty isnt expired, otherwise you're screwed.
-
-
Well
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by Kapoof
For those who say "take care of your system", i almost want to say that i hope yours dies, but i don't hope it does. I don't wish that on anyone, because it sucks. I treated mine like gold, gave them more then enough breathing room on top of my dresser. 2 died. The failure rate has little to do with taking care of it, and more to do with the 360 being built like a p.o.s. It's too bad, because MS has had this generation handed to them, with Nintendo going a different route, and the PS3 being a really hard sell. And they're F'ing it up. Customers are not stupid. MS isn't covering anything up here. They're only looking foolish. They need to fix this quick, or they'll just hand the generation back to Sony. Horrible.

Mass Effect, BioShock, Too Human, Halo 3, Eternal Sontra*,Halo Wars, Blue Dragon, Huxley, Left 4 Dead, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Alan Wake, plus many more great XBL arcade games. Take the chance I do have a PS3 also but my might aswell be broken because the only good exclusive game is Resistance: Fall of Man, all other good games are for 360 also, so i buy 360 version because of xbox live, downloadable content, and Achievements. I mainly use my PS3 for watching movies.

Irony is a 5 letter word
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by HaloGamer1222
How ironic is this. Today I get the ring of death today. 3 lights up.. "Hardware failure".. Tsk tsk.. This is my 2nd 360... This is a Microsoft supplied one within my warranty. Both problems are unrelated and have nothing to do with where I place my 360. My power brick is in a elevated state. I just hope that this problem can be fixed... And that I don't have to pay for this next one. My 360's have lasted a good couple months. Almost a year for both of them... I can't seem to figure out though how these systems can last only a couple months. A buddy of mine, his fans melted from the heat in the engine. Mine is unrelated to heat problems, but this is a problem that really needs to be taken care of. It's a great system, but I am not hearing Wii and PS3's having this problem...

I just hate when some stupid "xbox fanboy" always likes saying OMG you did not take care of your 360. Can people be really that stupid jeez go back to where ever you came from fanboy. I had an original 360 showed problems (graphical artifacts) months after launch did not really care expecting it to be a minor thing. Behold it dies out on me (overheating thanks for the beta system micro sit). I call have to pay 140$ which im not (repair later). I end up buying a core system a month ago. But guess what happens? As soon as I get home after the purchase plug it in (halo 2) I get a fuckin lock up noise from the drive then fuckin ring of death. (I was so mad I just BOUGHT the thing 20 MINUTES ago it dies on me?). Good thing walmart was still open took it back got a new one. Though this current one makes that drive lock up noise every time its turned on (playing halo 2 the screen gets all messed up "ghosting" not very often not sure if its my HDTV or 360).

Gaming is about good games?
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by atrimus
well, i now challenge that assertion. there has to come a point where even good games aren't worth the headache of a faulty-system. fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me, the old axiom goes. and this dude has been shafted 11 times...and still loves the system!?! no wonder Microsoft's game division is in the black; they've probably made more money fixing 360's than selling new ones. and people challenge the $600, functional, reliable and working PS3, which is still attempting to reach its true stride.

I have a few horror stories with the 360 myself. The first time I had a hard time with customer support they kept hanging up on my or saying they got "disconnected" I called like 10 times to finally get the box sent me my house. The second time the customer support was really nice and helpful but the box got shipped without the shipping labels and then the next box got lost in transit finally after like a month of waiting and calling I got my box....my 3rd 360 should be on its way back to me any day now...

It's because UPS employees THROW them
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by L1G3R
I work at UPS where all the trailers are loaded, and see dozens of the white boxes that the 360s go to and from the repair center in texas in. Packages aren't supposed to be thrown but that's what gets the job done fast. So if you ship UPS i'd recommend lots of bubble wrap... when i got my 360 back from MS all it was in was a plastic bag and 2 pieces of styrofoam.

Thank god for BestBuy replacement plans!
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by G@M3M@ST3R
My first XBOX 360 was purchased under a year ago, and failed from M$ updates. I take incredibly good care of all my consoles and consumer electronics and this was a pure disappointment. My replacement unit (Thanks to Best Buy, replaced on the spot), has had more disc read errors on Forza 2 (brand new game, not even a speck of dust or fingerprint touched the disc), and redringed more often than the previous unit, (yeah original unit was problematic too). I bought an Elite, and have yet to hook it up based on the issues with previous (pretty much the same) unit. I asked the person in the return department if they are seeing a lot of this, (I asked his for his unbiased visual confirmation, which he assured he was giving) and he said that's mostly what they get, dead XBOX 360s. He said he has seen hardly any PS3's and he had seen no Wii's but to his knowledge knows that a handful have failed. In short he stated not day or more than a couple go by w/o a failed 360. I am not surprised any more, and in fact I've played my 360 flat, not standing since ownership (well save a couple of vertical moments for troubleshooting), and am debating on if it will perform better standing. Really comes as no surprise based on the rush-to-market mentality that is Micro$oft.

Alright, this might be a little shock to those of you who may not have noticed this yet. NEW GENERATION CONSOLES ARE ESSENTIALLY COMPUTERS! So the maintenance and problems that occur with these consoles are a little intertwined with computer problems. Overheating was a big issue with the 360 came out because individuals were storing them in cramped spaces with little heat able to escape, hence the root of the problem. Microsoft (the biggest OS in the country) made these systems and coded most of it...It shouldn't come to that much of a surprise to know that there will be sequential problems, especially with a customer like this. I can imagine it now. I've had a 360 since Summer 2006. No problems have yet occured with my console...ever. What this certain customer might be experiencing is something called 'high-maintenance.' He wishes to have the 'perfect' console that tends to his every wishes and works EXACTLY as promoted on advertisements. Though, the electrical problem still confuses me in a way.

About 3 or 4 blogs ago I wrote about my similar woes with the Xbox 360. I've only been through 3 broken systems, but I would and might go through more. I too own all the systems and find both to be great in there own way, but my faith and love for the xbox 360 is quickly getting less by the day. This kind of garbage is unacceptable. I've officially taken all my xbox 360 reservations and transferred them to Ps3 titles. I have traded in a wealth of Microsoft Studios games and picked up Ps3 games, despite the few that are out there. I encourage more people to do the same. This is wrong, and it is clearly because they wanted to jump the gun for sales to beat Sony. God forbid they figure out their problems, and release a properly functioning system.

Well i have had my 360 since the first day it came out and i haven't had one problem with it. So what that means is the people that are haveing problems i bet its because you don't take care of it and u sit on its side instead of standing it up and your probly spill water on it and then you go and sit it some where closed in where it can't breath so i say its your own damn fault and you should learn to take better care of your system later dummys

Until Microsoft actually fears the consumers reaction to the failure rate of the Xbox 360, they will continue to ignore the problems. When people have had 12 systems fail on them, and they're still saying publically that they love the machine, thats all Microsoft needs to hear to continue to ignore the problems. People need to be willing to put their foot down.

sucks

The 360 cooling situation is garbage, and the main cause of systems bricking. The mainboard would overheat and the slight warping of the PCB causes the whole thing to screw up. Notice comparison shots of the elite vs the vanilla system. The Elite mainboard has epoxy all around the CPU, GPU and other parts in order to keep the heat from warping the PCB. Microsoft needs to do the responsible thing and fess up to these problems. I strongly believe that being honest and admitting to a problem makes better business sense than dodging questions, ignoring the issues, blaming the "vocal miniority" and secretly updating their system and then playing down the secret updates like it's nothing. I'm one of the lucky ones. Mine only freezes up occasionally after some Oblivion sessions. I've not got the red rings yet but I only play my 360 for a couple of hours every 2 weeks or so.

sony vs ms
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by bob4apples
I feel bad for the guys but everyone wants their consoles cheap. And to make theirs cheap they used crap components. Sony used better stuff and it cost us more alot more to buy. You get what you pay for so for everyone who wants a cheaper ps3 ask your self are you willing to put up with this?

I now know of sevral people that have had there 360 die 7 times. My 360 looks like it's about to die for the 3rd time in 3 months. If it dose die again I'll be lodging a complaint with the Office of Fair Trading.

whether or not a console is something I want to invest in. I purchase only 1 of each during each gen. If if fails, I will quit on it too. Luckily for me no Nintendo system has ever broke down. My Sony PS2 acted up a few years ago but still keeps on kicking. Microsoft seems to be the only maker that keeps me scratching my head as to why they don't have better quality when it comes to hardware. Time to hire some better engineers, I'm thinking top of the line. Here's hoping for a cheaper 360 in the future that can last at least the life of the console war. :)

MS will never admit the truth
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by _Kratos_
They will never admit their consoles have such high failure rates because their sales would plummet. I wish I knew and I would've bought a warranty from my local store. It would be a lot less pain than having to call the Xbox hotline and waiting weeks to get replacements.

I got my first 360 Jan 06, it died Aug 06. It was a struggle to get it fixed. 5 reps over a 3 month span, than a 3 week wait to get a refurbished one. While it still works I am just waiting for it to die. I cant play for more than an hour until freezes up. Than I got the famn attachment and while it crashes sometimes (about as much as th og xbox), it works better and I am hoping it will make it at least another 6 months. I went through 5 original Xboxes. I expect (which is sad like paying $3 for gas) to go through 4-6 by the time "next gen" roles around.

I've spent over $2,000 since I bought mny first 360 and if they cant provide me with a working system , I go to where the grass is greener, "PERIOD!!!"

Good article. It is a bit of a continuation from last weeks article but I do think it is definitely worth pursuing. I think it's a bigger problem than the media is letting on. I know that 1up doesn't want to piss off one of their bigger ad partners but isn't it your duty to gamers everywhere to say that the 360 is a turkey. I find it somewhat disconcerting that one one hand, Shane will outright say that a game like FANTASTIC FOUR is crap on 1up Yours a second after playing it. But 1up has never said squat about not buying a 360. I understand that telling someone not to get the FF game saves the kid $60 hard earned bucks, but why isn't the same courtesy shown to a kid or parents who are going to spend hundreds of dollars on a console. Seems a bit fishy. Keep it up. Love the 1up show ans 1up Yours

Good business move by Microsoft
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by ssycodude
Mircosoft is smart, they make disposable consoles and recycle the dead ones, at the same sell more consoles b/c it's cheaper to buy a new one than get back a refurbished one. Microsoft, I relaly must admit your talent in bringing poor craftsmanship to the nex gen wars.

10 months
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by zxmagus
I bought my first 360 at launch and since then I've had under warranty 360's out of commission for over 10 months now heres an excerpt from my horror story. Giving you a taste of what its like dealing with Microsoft's xbox call and repair center. 5 months ago i sent my first generation xbox360 manufactured on 2005-10-26 to get repaired (it had the dreaded 3 flashing red lights) at the cost of 150 CND. it was returned to me unfixed and broken worse then i sent it with it's case cracked and scratched up with a note saying they don't fix tampered boxes. I was noticeably irate i called them up and said basically what the hell i sent it to you to get fixed not only did you not fix it you returned it to me in worse shape then when i got it, they said to me that their was nothing they could do but they would pass it on to higher ups. A little later the higher ups called saying that they would look into it but i'd have to wait as they would need to get a report from the repair center. for 2 months i'd get a call every week saying that they still haven't gotten the report form the repair center and id have to keep waiting. after i while i was upset and asked well what if some one didn't write a report since after 2 months of looking and it still hasn't been found maybe it dose not exist, they assured me it had to and that they couldn't do anything with out that report. OK fast forward a little later to when Microsoft decreed that they would fix every broken first generation 360 now they said yes 360's get damaged in shipping all the time to the repair center and they would fix my system. Microsoft said they would ship me out a box to ship my broken 360 box backed to them for the second time. A few days later i get a call at 6 in the morning saying hello is this Lee I reply yes they say they have my box i was sent i said great where are you they said broadway NY, FYI I'm in vancouver canada they not only sent it to the wrong coast but country. 3rd time they made me ship the box with my own money to them at the cost of 26cnd, this process takes about 3 weeks i get 2 emails from them over it. oh and i shipped it on oct 24th November 10, 2006 Dear Customer, We have received your Xbox at our service center. It is our priority to process your Xbox in a timely manner and to get it back to you as good as new. We will contact you as soon as we are finished so you can get ready to get back into the game! Thanks, Xbox Customer Care November 14, 2006 Your Xbox Video Game system has been shipped! You can expect to receive it in 2-5 days. Thank you for your patience and get ready to get back into the action! Your shipping information is provided below for your reference: On nov 18th i get my package from purolator I open to find they have shipped me back the same broken console with a note saying no shipment found and they don't fix tampered cases. Some time in december customer support supervisor tells me I'll never get a fixed 360 and on my rebuttal puts down the receiver. December 26 I buy a second 360 on a after christmas sale. jan 5 send off my broken 360 console again to be repaired. Mid january i finally receive a refurbished 360. May 3rd second replacement 360 fails

Got a launch console in November of 2005 "3 rings of the doom" in December 2006. Everyone knows MS has a serious problem the only reason they extended the warranty is to avoid lawsuits and recalls.

Still on my first
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by NegativeZero
I'm still on my first, no problems with it at all aside from some wierdness in crackdown with it losing track of where I am and not streaming new content out to cope, and that I attribute to some kind of strange bug. That said, I owned an original Xbox on launch and got one of the machines that had a dodgy DVD drive. It finally packed up just outside of warranty, and MS expected me to pay not just the (stupidly expensive) repairs but the shipping costs, and were only going to offer a month's warranty on the repair. It turned out I could go down to a store and buy a brand new one for an extra $30, which I did.

but, you know, subconcious behavioural patterns may be at play here. or perhaps the 360 is running too hot. is he keeping it in the same location every time? it's obvious he isn't lying about how many 360's he's been through, but maybe the problem lies in HOW and WHERE the console is being used. I know that if the console gets too hot, the solder on the boards may seperate causing the red lights. overheating may also cause problems with the sound circuit.

guess that makes me a "vocal minority". Personally, and no offense to anyone, but the worst experience about getting a broken 360 is having to call the costumer support center at india. it a freaking pain in the a$$ trying to understand what the heck those people microsoft hired are saying.

I Miss My Xbox 360
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by Senninha
I bought my first Xbox 360 in March of '06. Less than a year later the console had already been refurbished twice by M$ and the bastards made me pay for the shipping! After I got my second refurbished unit back, I decided to sell it on eBay. I miss my Xbox 360 a lot, especially now that Forza 2 is out, but I will NOT buy another one until the new 65 nm chipset is implemented, the unit runs cooler and quieter, and until they are more reliable and cheaper. My launch day PS2 finally died last December, after more than six years of service! And my Xbox 360 dies less than a year later ... TWICE?!!! C'mon M$!!! It's not about the costumer service, it's about the reliability of your console and having the peace of mind that your $400 console will work when you press the power button!

On my 3rd
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by RawDogginIt
Got my first this past Christmas. It worked about 3 months then I got the 3 red lights. 2nd one lasted about a month. This one's already dead and I'm fed up with this shit. This one was new and I opened it up and I did find a second heat sink and it still fucked up on me. If I would've known this was going to be such a big problem I would have toughed it out with the PS3. My Wii got WAAAAY more play time than my 360's and they still died. I didn't play no more than 2 hours at a time just for the fact that shit happens. As it stands right now I'm going to be making the switch in the very, very near future.

Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by gundumb
I work at a place that sells these things...and all i can say is that i don't really sell new ones so much as i exchange defective ones. The ones sent back to microsoft are only half of the reported issues...theres a whole other set that are sent to retailers warehouses to be repaired or then sent on to microsoft. It's called quality control.... P.S. Anyone notice that the second console a company produces tends to have the most problems??? Sony: PS2 notorious for defects, except theirs was normally after 1-2 years of playing, not 1-2 months. However the PS3 has had a very small defective rate, and very few glitches to date. Microsoft: 360 notorious for a whole host of reasons. Nintendo is on their 5th console, and neither the Wii nor the Gamecube had hardly any defectives from what I've seen.

prolonged evaluation
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by Sci_Fi_Neurofunk
Microsoft needs to spend the money to do long term testing on their consoles. The problem lies in not doing enough in house research to isolate specific design flaws. I bought mine about a year ago and i've had no problems but it sounds like many others have.

I'm on the same page...

I'll give you guys the full run down on my current situation. I pre-ordered the original xbox and 3 MS games at launch, so I've supported their console efforts from day one. I was a beta tester for xbox live, and have renewed my subscription every year since then. My first xbox failed about a year after I bought it, and I was forced to purchase a second one. I traded that in towards my pre-order on the 360. My 360 failed a few months after launch, but MS was very quick to fix the problem, wasn't too upset. The 2nd time it broke, it was a little frustrating, but they were still very responsive and took little more than a week before it was repaired and sent back to me. Now I'm out of warranty, and it's broke for the third time. I got the red ring of death about 3 weeks prior to the end of the Halo 3 beta. That alone was extremely frustrating. More frustrating is the fact that they wanted me to pay for repairs. I pushed with everyone I talked to to, until I finally got up to someone with a little muscle. The solution we reached, was not to repair my launch unit for the 3rd time, but to send a brand new production unit for free, but with absolutely no warranty. Not exactly the happy ending I was looking for. I'd be happier about it, if I actually got the damn thing. It's now almost July, and I still haven't received my new 360. In fact, I'm pretty sure it still hasn't even left the distribution center in Texas. Frustrated? Absolutely. But I'm with Justin, and I have no hard feelings towards MS. Yet. I agree with a lot of their strategies, and services. I love xbox live, and I love a lot of the MS exclusives. I can't wait for Bioshock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, the list goes on and on. I just hope they find a way to fix these hardware issues, and they should have no problem turning a profit with their games division.

The Xbox 360 is a f**king joke. As much as I want to play AC6, I'm not spending money on a peice of shit tha's going to break. Not even if it breaks once. No other console has ever done this to me. in the 20 years I've been playing games, this is the only one with an honest to god problem. And what? Microsoft did nothing about it? Well, I guess that means no $$$ for them. F**k them.

I just sent out mine
Posted: Jun 26, 2007 12:00AM PST by Phil-osopher
with a problem that I've never heard of happening before. Basically whenever I put in a 360 game it would say "To play this disc insert it into an Xbox 360 console." And on the dashboard where the name of the game in the tray is supposed to show up it says "Play DVD". But I mean I like still like the 360, it has good games and it is a good machine. A few hardware problems can't take that away from it. And look at this way. Each generation has to have that machine that fucks up a lot, the 360 is filling that position.

i just got 3 red lights today. I hadn't yet turned the system on and when I go to play The Darkness it gets to the main menu and freezes. "This is no big deal though" I think to myself, "besides, it's happened before hasn't it?" I go to turn it back on and bam! 3 red lights. Don't even try to tell me I wasn't taking care of it, and no there was no 3rd party devices attached.

I have only had my system break down once but still 11 for this guy. Microsoft you have had almost 2 years to get these problems fixed. You should feel ashamed that the most tech-savey company in the world still does not have these problems down. You know computers like the back of your hand so please fix the problems with this one.
