United 93

United 93
Director: Paul Greengrass
Stars: David Alan Basche, Olivia Thirlby, Liza Coln-Zayas (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: A real time account of the events on United Flight 93, one of the planes hijacked on 9/11 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers foiled the terrorist plot.

THE BUZZ: British director Greengrass handles the first feature film about 9/11 (Oliver Stone's World Trade Center will come out this August). Controversy's brewing. After receiving complaints from audience members, the AMC Loews theater in New York City's Lincoln Square yanked the trailer, though it is still playing in other cities at this time. Despite the fact that Universal will donate 10 percent of the first three days' grosses to the Flight 93 Memorial Fund, something tells us boycotts are in the works.

R.V.

R.V.
Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Stars: Robin Williams, Cheryl Hines, Kristin Chenoweth (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: Bob McNeive (Williams) and his dysfunctional family rent an RV for a roadtrip to the Colorado Rockies, where they encounter a bizarre community of campers.

THE BUZZ: It's like Johnson Family Vacation, with way more yelling and "antics" from Robin Williams! Fortunately co-starring Arrested Development's Will Arnett and Tony Hale!

Message Boards: This is 'Call of the Simpsons' + 'Mobile Homer' live action! rip off|Oh lord.

Stick It

Stick It
Director: Jessica Bendinger
Stars: Missy Peregrym, Jeff Bridges, Vanessa Lengies (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: After a run-in with the law, Haley Graham (Peregrym) is forced to return to the world from which she fled some years ago. Enrolled in an elite gymnastics program run by the legendary Burt Vickerman (Bridges), Haley's rebellious attitude gives way to something that just might be called team spirit.

THE BUZZ: Bring It On Jessica Bendinger gets back to the genre that first brought her success, and this time the clever writer is in the director's chair, too. And, actually? Stick It sounds like a reimagining of the cheerleading comedy, just seen through the eyes of Eliza Dushku's character, Missy Pantone. All the elements are in place -- mean girls, slangy, motor-mouth dialogue, hot action sequences -- and there's no reason why Missy Peregrym can't go large with this one as Kirsten Dunst did back in 2000. We just really, really hope that Sparky Polastri and his Spirit Fingers make an appearance.

Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah and the Bee
Director: Doug Atchison
Stars: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, Keke Palmer (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films

The Plot: A young girl from south Los Angeles heads to the National Spelling Bee.

THE BUZZ: This dramatized version of Spellbound was originally slated for a 2005 release, but it was pushed out to (probably) distance itself from Bee Season. Featuring a charming trailer and two of our favorite dramatic performers, we're thinking Akeelah could be one of the better received films of the season.

Water

Water
Director: Deepa Mehta
Stars: Lisa Ray, John Abraham, Seema Biswas (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: When her husband dies, an 8-year-old Indian girl is sent to a temple in Varanasi where widows live in penitence. Her behavior sends ripples throughout the temple, most notably affecting a woman who longs for a different life and has fallen for a follower of Mahatma Ghandi.

THE BUZZ: It took nearly five years for Deepa Mehta to actually make her latest film, as its controversial subject matter made it the target of Hindu fundamentalists who burned sets and found other ways to upset the production. (During the difficult period, Mehta made two other films, Bollywood/Hollywood and The Republic of Love). The film, the culmination to the trilogy Mehta began with Fire and Earth, met further opposition in late 2005 from a writer-director who claimed Mehta stole her story. It's the kind of situation U.S. indie distributors love to talk about.

Guys and Balls

Guys and Balls [limited]
Director: Sherry Horman
Stars: Maximilian Brckner, Lisa Potthoff, Dietmar Br (Full Cast)
Studio: Regent Releasing

The Plot: Kicked off his football team for playing poorly (and for being gay), Ecki (Brueckner) looks to assemble an all-gay team to challenge his old mates to a match.

THE BUZZ: This one looks as cute as it is derivative (Variety's Dennis Harvey suggested it be called Bend Over, Beckham), though it's breezy tone and guessability could make it a perfect date movie. Just make him buy the tickets.

Killer Diller

Killer Diller [limited]
Director: Tricia Brock
Stars: Lucas Black, William Lee Scott, Fred Willard (Full Cast)
Studio: Kd Productions Inc.

The Plot: A guitar playing car thief (Scott) meets an autistic savant piano player (Black), and together they transform a group of reluctant halfway house convicts into The Killer Diller Blues Band.

THE BUZZ: The elusive Black leads a cast of largely unknown young actors in writer-director Brock's debut, which casually flirted with the festival circuit before finding a release date. It's going to need major word-of-mouth to catch heat, as most critics will see the film right before the general audience.

Wassup Rockers

Wassup Rockers [limited]
Director: Larry Clark
Stars: Jonathan Velasquez, Francisco Pedrasa, Milton Velasquez (Full Cast)
Studio: First Look Pictures Releasing

The Plot: Latino skater boys from South Central L.A. opt to escape their neighborhood for Hollywood and Beverly Hills, where they attract local rich girls and plenty of trouble with the police, jealous boyfriends, and nervous parents.

THE BUZZ: We hear that Larry Clark's sixth film is reportedly a little funnier than you'd expect, and it positions South Central as a safer environment than the streets of Hollywood and Beverly Hills for some kids. Most of the main actors are playing versions of themselves, and the cultural focus here is on punk rockers who don't want much to do with the norms of their neighborhood. Rockers premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before being picked as the opening night film at Slamdance back in January.

Clean

Clean [NY}
Director: Olivier Assayas
Stars: Maggie Cheung, Nick Nolte (Full Cast)
Studio: Palm Pictures

The Plot: A former drug addict struggles to escape her tragic past and forge a bond with her young son, currently in the custody of his grandparents.

THE BUZZ: Maggie Cheung, once just a beauty queen and Jackie Chan sidekick, finally cemented her status as a bona fide actress-with-a-capital-A with this role, which won her the Best Actress award at Cannes 2005. Nick Nolte, as one of the grandparents, is said to be just as good, but this is Cheung's show all the way.
