Mission: Impossible III

Mission: Impossible III
Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: Plot unknown.

THE BUZZ: Jeez, the film's worldwide release is just over a month away, and we still aren't quite sure what the third mission is about. (Does Paramount have any clue?) The trailer only hints at what we already know: even Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as powerful as he is, looks unable to stop Tom Cruise.

M:I3 has been shrouded in weirdness from the moment it was greenlit. Stars, directors, and screenwriters have come and gone, and the whole production was reportedly threatened by Cruise's stumping for Scientology when he should have been promoting War of the Worlds (a period which yielded the priceless rumor that Cruise tried to brainwash potential co-star Scarlett Johansson). But when the pre-production hype settled and filming began, we took a look at the cast, which includes Billy Crudup, Maggie Q, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and realized that J.J. Abrams's directorial debut has little chance of self-destructing, even people are calling for a boycott of the film. Which is so cute!

P.S. Rumor has it the first trailer for Oliver Stone's World Trade Center will show before the movie.

Hoot

Hoot
Director: Wil Shriner
Stars: Logan Lerman, Luke Wilson, Brie Larson (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: A young man (Lerman) moves from Montana to Florida with his family, where he's compelled to engage in a fight to protect a population of endangered owls.

THE BUZZ: You're thinking, "Owls?" But don't make fun; two years ago no one would have said a documentary on penguins would have had a chance. Hoot is like a Pixar movie come to life, and I'd rather watch defiant, environmentally friendly teens than some petulant layabouts.

An American Haunting

An American Haunting
Director: Courtney Solomon
Stars: Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, Rachel Hurd-Wood (Full Cast)
Studio: Freestyle Releasing LLC

The Plot: For three years, a spirit torments the Bell family, until it claims one of their lives.

THE BUZZ: Thanks to Emily Rose, this turn-of-the-century horror film gets a wide release. Purporting the same "based on actual events" marketing tag, Haunting goes a step further than most films of its kind; it offers an answer as to what happened to the family, and the truth of behind the Legend of the Bell Witch. Looks to thrill fans of jump-cut scares, and we hear Sutherland has a ball with his role, and Rachel Hurd-Wood (first seen in Peter Pan) is excellent.

The Promise

The Promise [limited]
Director: Kaige Chen
Stars: Cecilia Cheung, Dong-Kun Jang (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Independent Pictures

The Plot: Empowered by the love of a slave (Dong-kun), a royal concubine (Cheung) is given the chance to make an extraordinary decision.

THE BUZZ: Known as the most expensive Chinese film to date, the latest from director Kaige (Farewell My Concubine) boasts cinematography by Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and stunt coordinator Dion Lam (Infernal Affairs, Spiderman 2). Originally a Weinstein Company release, Warner Independent picked up rights to the film after Harvey and Bob disagreed with the producers on how the film should be marketed (the Weinsteins saw it as an art house film, while the Chinese backers wanted a full-scale Oscar campaign).

Crazy Like a Fox

Crazy Like a Fox [limited]
Director: Richard Squires
Stars: Roger Rees, Mary McDonnell (Full Cast)
Studio: Innovation Film Group (IFG)

The Plot: The mad adventures of an eccentric farmer (Rees) who's cheated out of his farm by cityfolk and decides to abandon his family for a new home in a cave on the local creek.

THE BUZZ: Why don't both these actors get better film roles?
