Joyeux Noël

Joyeux Nol [limited]
Director: Christian Carion
Stars: Diane Kruger, Benno Frmann, Guillaume Canet (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: A miraculous event on Christmas Eve, 1941 brings a moment of peace for French, Scottish, and German troops fighting in the trenches of WWII.

THE BUZZ: Writer-director Christian Carion's Golden Globe-nominated second film received a 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes last year, prompting one of the biggest international distribution deals ever put together at the festival.

16 Blocks

16 Blocks
Director: Richard Donner
Stars: Bruce Willis, Mos Def (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros.

The Plot: An aging cop (Willis) is assigned the ordinary task of escorting a fast-talking witness (Mos Def) from police custody to a courthouse. However there are forces at work trying to stop prevent them from making it.

THE BUZZ: Willis is in the middle of his third or fourth renaissance, though he can't seem to shake these cop roles. And that 'stache should go. Who knows how this project landed in the lap of Richard Donner, who of late makes a better producer than director. Looks like it'll be up to the mighty Mos Def to keep things snapping, though the thought of him and Willis motor-mouthing their way through action hero dialogue does have a certain appeal. That, with the addition of the always-good David Morse, makes us think we're in for some surprises here.

Review: 5 out of 10 stars: There's a sturdy tale about a worn-out New York City cop who finds redemption in the movie 16 Blocks; unfortunately, Bruce Willis's latest take on a man-in-decline is reduced in its effect by an unwelcome surprise -- Mos Def's annoying, actorly performance as petty crook Eddie Bunker. Nothing in the initial set-up here indicates that an ill-conceived character will bring the movie down, but Eddie is one of the most discordant good guys in recent memory, a man who almost made me root for the crooked cops and alienated me from the movie as a whole...more

Aquamarine
Director: Elizabeth Allen
Stars: Emma Roberts, JoJo, Sara Paxton (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox 2000 Pictures

The Plot: Right before she's to move to Australia, Hailey (JoJo) and her best friend, Claire (Roberts), meet a mermaid (Paxton) who's washed up in their local pool. Their new, buoyant friend has three days to prove to her father that true love exists, and she'll grant any wish the girls for their help in hooking her up.

THE BUZZ: Splash for tweens! With a screenplay by Jessica (Bring It On) Bendinger!! Sorry, JoJo haters, but we think this looks kind of good, and remember: it's a movie for young girls, not surly adult men!!!

Ultraviolet

Ultraviolet
Director: Kurt Wimmer
Stars: Milla Jovovich, Cameron Bright (Full Cast)
Studio: Screen Gems Inc.

The Plot: Toward the end of this century, a peculiar disease turns some of the world's population into beings with enhanced speed, strength, and intelligence. As this new breed separates from the rest of humankind and the world teeters on the brink of a civil war, an infected woman (Jovovich) is caught in the middle, not yet aware that she might be the one person who can restore peace.

THE BUZZ: After seeing Jovovich in Resident Evil, Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) wrote a role for the actress -- one that's only a shade or two different from Resident's heroine, Alice. Will the Evil masses flood theaters to watch Jovovich fight a different war, or will they wait for the DVD (like they did with RE: Apocalypse)? I have to say that UV's cheesy trailer lowered my expectations, and interest.

Block Party

Block Party
Director: Michel Gondry
Stars: Dave Chappelle, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill (Full Cast)
Studio: Focus Features

The Plot: A mix of Dave Chappelle's sketch and stand-up comedy, as well as musical interludes, inspired in part by the 1973 documentary Wattstax.

THE BUZZ: Regarding Mr. Chappelle: is he or isn't he crazy? We say no, but then again, most anyone's going to look a bit nuts through Michel Gondry's lens. What we do know is the advance buzz on the project is sonorous, and by the time it's released, Chappelle's minions will be ravenous for new material -- even if it's a bit more serious than normal. And who doesn't want to watch a reunited Fugees? P.S. I'm going to sneak into the movie by hiding in Erykah Badu's wig. I love that wig.

The Hills Have Eyes

The Hills Have Eyes
Director: Alexandre Aja
Stars: Ted Levine, Kathleen Quinlan, Dan Byrd (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: Deep in the desert, mutated savages ensare and prey upon a vacationing family.

THE BUZZ: Director Alexandre Aja saw his much-hyped High Tension fail big time at the box office, but we're thinking he'll do just fine with his remake of Wes Craven's classic horror film (Aja also has a couple high-interest projects in development, including an adaptation of Charles Burns's modern classic horror comics, Black Hole). Here, though, the writer-director is working with his Tension collaborator Grgory Levasseur, and we hear the pair have expanded on the original's themes in a way that has left Craven "floored." We know the gore has been ratcheted up a few notches -- so much so that Fox Searchlight had to pass it by the MPAA a few times to get the NC-17 rating downgraded to R.

Failure to Launch

Failure to Launch
Director: Tom Dey
Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Bates (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: A mom and dad set their son (McConaughey) up with the perfect-girlfriend-for-hire (Parker) in a plot to get him to finally move out of their home.

THE BUZZ: For us, the question mark here is hovering not only over director Tom Dey (Showtime, Shanghai Knights), but screenwriters Tom Astle and Matt Ember, who are both making their feature debuts. Oh, and the casting of Terry Bradshaw as the dad ... Is this going to be one of those romantic comedies that works solely because the actors have a flicker of chemistry (even though there were last-minute rumors of McConaughey not quite getting his co-star)? And while we're on the subject, why do we get the feeling development executives think that every good blonde deserves McConaughey?

Review: 5 out of 10 stars: When exactly did Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker become trademarked, commodified versions of themselves? It's a little easier to pin it down with home-boy McConaughey, who went from being a nifty Dazed and Confused slacker to Joel Schmuacher's khaki-butted discovery in A Time To Kill to naked-bongo-player stoner to -- it's in here somewhere...more

The Libertine

The Libertine
Director: Laurence Dunmore
Stars: Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton, John Malkovich (Full Cast)
Studio: Weinstein Company, The

The Plot: In life, John Wilmot (Depp), a.k.a. the Earl of Rochester, drank and debauched his way to an early grave; in death, the work of this 17th century poet won universal acclaim.

THE BUZZ: Harvey and Bob Weinstein snatched this controversial biography (don't say "biopic") away from Miramax and gave it an Oscar qualifying run at the end of 2005. We always thought chances were slim for award nominations, and the delayed release left us feeling the initial theatrical run didn't go so well. With a recut trailer and a go-for-broke release pattern, we think the Weinstein Company is banking on a quick return with this one.

The Shaggy Dog

The Shaggy Dog
Director: Brian Robbins
Stars: Tim Allen, Kristin Davis, Craig Kilborn (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: While investigating the goings-on at an animal laboratory, workaholic deputy district attorney Dave Douglas (Allen) is accidentally infected with a serum that turns into a sheepdog. Now privy to his family's wishes and true feelings, Dave gets more and more desperate to return to being a dad, not a dog.

THE BUZZ: With Eight Below and now this update of the 1959 family comedy, it's official: dogs are this year's penguins. Along with a handful of others, Allen contributed to Dog's screenplay (his first feature credit). It's hard to knock a family comedy with such as random cast as this, especially one that has roles for Jane Curtin, Robert Downey Jr., and Danny Glover, but one thing is for sure: this is the most unsettling poster of the year.

Evil [limited]
Director: Mikael Hfstrm

Studio: Magnolia Pictures

The Plot: Expelled from his high school for fighting, Erik (Wilson) is sent to live at the prestigious Stjrsnberg Academy, a school Erik soon learns isn't run by its headmaster, but rather a cabal of affluent, sadistic students.

THE BUZZ: A Swedish film adapated from Jan Guillou's best-selling novel, Evil has earned strong reviews for its acting and cinematography. But the story's been dismissed as being predictable and poorly plotted, surprisingly. Sounds like the same reviews of writer-director's last film, Derailed. (Note Evil was released in 2003 and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 2004 awards.)

Stars: Colin Farrell, Salma Hayek (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Classics

The Plot: In Depression-era Los Angeles, Arturo (Farrell), an aspring writer, is transfixed by Camilla (Hayek), a barmaid caught in a downward spiral.

THE BUZZ: This adaptation of John Fante's novel was originally set to star Eva Mendes and be co-distributed by DreamWorks and Paramount. By the time production kicked up, Mendes bailed to co-star in Hitch and DreamWorks backed out of the deal. The film has now been repackaged as an indie, which hopefully means the pressure's off for it to be a breakout hit. However you might feel about Farrell with an Italian accent and Hayek as yet another "fiery Mexican beauty," we're hard pressed to name a writer-director who understands Los Angeles better than Robert Towne.

THE BUZZ: The future was looking pretty cloudy for Asia Argento's directorial debut, until it was finally revealed that writer J.T. V for Vendetta
Director: James McTeigue
Stars: Hugo Weaving, Natalie Portman, Rupert Graves (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros.

The Plot: A shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" (Weaving) uses terrorist tactics to fight totalitarian England. Upon rescuing Evey Hammond (Portman) from the secret police, he finds a frightened woman he can mold into his ally.

THE BUZZ: Remember, remember that this was originally set for release last November, but Warner Bros. blinked after the London bombings and decided to push the opening to spring. Still, producer Joel Silver has indicated that the film will not skimp on its depiction of the city's tube lines being destroyed by a terrorist act. Let's hope that, in the hands of director/Wachowski Brothers protege McTeigue, Alan Moore's graphic novel is nutured with the same kind of care that made Sin City the worldwide hit that no one expected.

Review: 7 out of 10 stars: A noted historian once wrote, "An attraction to anarchy is the ultimate indulgence of a bourgeois culture" and, if that's true, then V for Vendetta is one of the first bon-bons of our post-9/11 society.

She's the Man

She's the Man
Director: Andy Fickman
Stars: Amanda Bynes, Laura Ramsey, Channing Tatum (Full Cast)
Studio: DreamWorks SKG

The Plot: When her big brother decides to ditch for a couple weeks in London, Viola (Bynes) heads over to his elite boarding school, disguises herself as him, and proceeds to fall for one of her soccer teammates. Little does she realize she's not the only one with romantic troubles, as she, as he, gets in the middle of a series of intermingled love affairs.

THE BUZZ: Bynes slinks back into theaters with this contemporary take on Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". We don't think it'll be as good as 10 Things I Hate About You (both films share the same writers), but it's obvious DreamWorks and director Andy Fickman (Reefer Madness) is gunning for that level of success. David Cross as Principal Gold? We're there, even if we have to plug our ears when Bynes gets butch.

Review: 4 out of 10 stars: William Shakespeare hovers over She's the Man much like a bottle of vermouth does over a martini shaker, imparting an essence without ever really diluting the contents of what's inside. Thank You for Smoking

Thank You for Smoking [limited]
Director: Jason Reitman
Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Cameron Bright, Maria Bello (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: Nick Naylor (Eckhart) earns a paycheck as Big Tobacco's chief spokesman and administer of spin, a job that makes it tough for him to [remain] a role model for his 12-year-old son.

THE BUZZ: Thank You has been classified as satire-lite from the number of critics who saw Jason Reitman's (son of Ivan) debut film at the Toronto International Film Festival. That didn't stop indie-minded studios from jockeying for the rights to the picture; in fact, the two heads of Paramount Classics were fired when their handshake agreement fell through (Fox Searchlight wound up with the film). That's probably not enough to stir up audience interest, but the soft political barbs, excellent cast, and Sundance buzz just might be. But there are those who will probably stay away now that the sex scene featuring Katie Holmes has been cut.

Find Me Guilty

Find Me Guilty [limited]
Director: Sidney Lumet
Stars: Vin Diesel, Peter Dinklage, Ron Silver (Full Cast)

The Plot: A drama based on the longest Mafia trial in U.S. history, as mobster Jack DiNorscio (Diesel), faced with a series of charges, decides to stand trial instead of ratting out his family and associates. A wrench is thrown into the system when DiNorscio opts to defend himself.

THE BUZZ: We're trying to be less pessimistic and judgmental in the new year, so let's just say we hope Vin Diesel expands on the dramatic promise he displayed in Boiler Room (don't snicker, it's not half bad), and that Sidney Lumet draws influence from the strongest films on his resume with this pulled-from-the-headlines courtroom thriller.

Studio:

The Plot: A comedy set in the world of competitive Church basketball, where Bishop Linderman (Willard), calls on one of his followers, Dennis Buckstead (Wilson), to turn a group of non-athletes into a championship team.

THE BUZZ: Don't just dismiss it as Dodgeball with a stronger moral center, as Church Ball will most likely convert in specialty release. Writer-director Hale saw his recent film, The R.M., make over a million in theaters, and it's possible this one will pull in a more secular audience, if only for the fact that Gary Coleman nearly shatters a backboard with his face. THE BUZZ: This indie has a different focus than David Fincher's upcoming film, which closely follows Robert Graysmith's books on the murderer and his victims. The cast is the best thing this movie has going for it, though there's precious little buzz on it -- even as the release date draws near.

The Plot: Disturbed by a troubling memory from her childhood, Sabina (Mezzogiorno) travels from Italy to see her brother (Casico) in New England. From him, she will learn what happened to her as a child, as her relationship back home crumbles.

THE BUZZ: Italy's most celebrated film of last year earned a Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination, but on this side of the ocean, it's the former contender with the least buzz preceding its release. Numerous reviews indicate the film is solid and accessible, but marred by a clumsy subplot that involves a lesbian who falls for an older woman. Though we do understand Angela Finocchiaro's performance (she plays said older woman) gives the film a much-needed sense of humor.

THE BUZZ: Does Spike Lee have the restraint to pull off a straight-up thriller? As he guns for his first true commercial hit, everyone involved in the production would have to screw up extra bad to dull this one down. But, uh, isn't the title kind of a spoiler in and of itself? THE BUZZ: Isn't it tough to be scared of a killer that looks like one of the guys from Slipknot? And after Cry_Wolf, will audiences really want any part of the whole online/video game world? Stay Alive should do okay thanks to its familiar, likeable cast, though we think the film will be better served by DVD. American Gun [3/22 -- limited]
Director: Aric Avelino

Studio: IFC Films

The Plot: The lives of a grieving, ostracized mother (Harden), a stressed-out high school principal (Whitaker), a promising student (Escarpeta), and a discontented co-ed (Cardellini) are symbolically brought together in this take on the proliferation of guns in American society.

THE BUZZ: Writer-director Aric Avelino's debut film comes across like a companion piece to Crash, and that's the work's best chance at grabbing some attention in a crowded indie calendar. Advance reviews have ranged from politely dismissive to harsh, as the general consensus is, despite wonderful acting from Forest Whitaker and Marcia Gay Harden the film's symbolism is heavy-handed and the pace is skittish. But, hey, isn't that what helped Paul Haggis & co. win 3 Oscars? (Sorry -- we're still bitter that ... Capote didn't win Best Picture). THE BUZZ: We love Buscemi as director almost as much (but not quite) as Buscemi as actor; he has this way of exploring the dirty corners of his character's lives that is, at the very least, relatable. Lonesome should do well by its leads, Affleck and Tyler, who are so often underused (or just ... used). Shots of whiskey beforehand are recommended.

The Plot: Novelist Catherine Tramell (Stone) is once again in trouble with the law, and Scotland Yard appoints psychiatrist Dr. Andrew Glass (Morrissey) to evaluate her. Though, like others before him, Glass is entranced by Tramell and lured into a seductive game.

THE BUZZ: Dear God, where to begin with this one? Stone decided to sue the producers when they failed on the "pay" part of her pay-or-play contract, then promptly dropped the suit once the money was ponied up and the green light went back on. Low-profile Brits Michael Caton-Jones and David Morrissey stepped into directing and leading man roles, respectively, and finally cameras rolled. All this drama, however, sidesteps the question of whether or not we actually need this sequel as badly as Ms. Stone does...

The Devil and Daniel Johnston

The Devil and Daniel Johnston [LA/NY]
Director: Jeff Feuerzeig
Stars: Daniel Johnston, Mabel Johnston, Bill Johnston (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: Artistic/manic-depressive/genius Daniel Johnston is observed in this portrait of madness, creativity, and love.

THE BUZZ: Few know more about Johnston's life and career aside from the musicians who have name checked him for the last 25 years. The man is a beautiful freak, and his visual art is as amazing as his music. When he said, "When I was 19, I wanted to be the Beatles," he wasn't fully aware that he'd become as important as that band is to a host of rock and roll luminaries.

Ice Age: The Meltdown

Ice Age: The Meltdown
Director: Carlos Saldanha
Stars: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary (Full Cast)
Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

The Plot: With the Ice Age at its end, Diego (Leary), Manfred (Romano), and Sid (Leguizamo) are worried that the melting ice will destroy their valley. The animals decide to take it upon themselves to unite and warn everyone about the situation.

THE BUZZ: Whoa, it's like the animated The Day After Tomorrow; hopefully no one will get on the little sloth and his pals for promoting bad science or anything. Snaps to this sequel's topicality, and there's no question it should top its illustrious predecessor's success.

Review: 6 out of 10 stars: The caveman toddler, who was the emotional core of the original Ice Age film, isn't in Ice Age: The Meltdown. Since the little grub didn't have a single line one might expect that the filmmakers could forge ahead without him without much consequence. His absence is noticed, however, as with him has gone any particular attempt to mount any story at all leaving Meltdown as a string of sight gags and clever conceits with prehistoric animals...more

Slither

Slither
Director: James Gunn
Stars: Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Rooker (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: A small town is taken over by an alien plague that tranforms residents into zombies and mutants. One townie (Rooker) turns particularly violent, and it's up to his ex-wife (Banks) and the local sheriff (Fillion) to stop him.

THE BUZZ: Advance buzz was baaaaaad but we've been told it's entirely wrong. Our reviewer loved it, loved it, claiming it was Tremors meets Night of the Living Dead in all the best possible ways. Writer-director James Gunn has reportedly made one of those rare birds, a fun horror movie. We're also told that Nathan Fillion (Serenity) proves himself another rare bird, a funny, sexy, leading man who can carry the weight of the action.

Review: 8 out of 10 stars: Slither filled me with a mixture of creeped-out giddiness and dread; it gradually constricted itself, effectively paralyzing me. Then, as I thought the movie's yuckiest creation - a pair of tentacle-like suckling tubes protruding from Michael Rooker's chest - were about to burrow into me, Slither exploded with even more awesomeness...more

ATL

ATL
Director: Chris Robinson
Stars: T.I., Lauren London, Evan Ross Naess (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: As four friends prepare for life after high school, different challenges bring about turning points in each of their lives. The dramas unfold and resolve at their local rollerskating rink, Jellybeans.

THE BUZZ: With its at-the-roller-rink trappings, ATL initially sounded like the second coming of the underappreciated Roll Bounce, but once we saw the trailer, images of early John Singleton came to mind. Atlanta hip-hop is still hot with the "TRL" demographic, and they're the only ones we can see warming to the PG-13 drama here. TLC's T-Boz and superstar producer Dallas Austin came up with the story idea and recruited veteran music video director Chris Robinson, who's making his debut. Interestingly, for such a music-related film, no official soundtrack is being released. Instead, Warner Bros. partnered star T.I. and his record label, Atlantic Records, who is releasing the rapper's new album, "King," which hits stores this week.

Review: 7 out of 10 stars: If you're looking for exceptional young actors these days, stay away from white-bread offerings like She's the Man and head towards a new wave of urban-friendly coming-of-age flicks, exemplified most recently by the amiable Roll Bounce and now the surprisingly well-done ATL. As charming as it is formulaic...more

Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!

Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! [limited]
Director: Adam Yauch
Stars: Mike D, Adam Horovitz, Adam Yauch (Full Cast)
Studio:

The Plot: A live performance shot by audience members at a 2004 Beastie Boys concert at Madison Square Garden.

THE BUZZ: Beastie Boys are giving all they have to their fans as they (seemingly) dim the lights on a brilliantly diverse career in music. Awesome was shot by some 50 fans who were handed hand-held Hi8 cameras at the show. Fresh.

Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School

Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School [limited]
Director: Randall Miller
Stars: Robert Carlyle, Marisa Tomei, Mary Steenburgen (Full Cast)
Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films LLC

The Plot: A tragic event causes a widower (Carlyle) to set out to find a dying man's childhood sweetheart. By stepping into the man's shoes for a spell, he ends up a ballroom dancing class, where he meets a lovely woman (Tomei) who just might help him find a new lease on life.

THE BUZZ: Writer-director Randall Miller revisits the world he fist constructed over 15 years ago in a short film of the same name. With this feature version, shows he's moving away from the goofy comedies that have defined his career up until this point. Early reviews have been pleasant, most of them indicating Miller's romantic fantasy could easily sway audiences his way. If he can get any of his amazing cast on the PR circuit, Marilyn could be a breakout indie.

Swimmers

Swimmers [limited]
Director: Doug Sadler
Stars: Tara Devon Gallagher, Sarah Paulson, Robert Knott (Full Cast)
Studio: Skouras Pictures

The Plot: When an ear problem forces young Emma Tyler (Gallagher) to give up her favorite past-time, she bonds with Merrill (Paulson), a slightly damaged woman who has just returned to her hometown. Emma's wide-eyed observations allow Merrill to reconnect with her own lost innocence, while the presence of an adult mentor helps Emma's deal with her family's personal and financial troubles.

THE BUZZ: Fans of David Gordon Green and other regional filmmakers might want to check this one out, as we hear Doug Sadler has created a wonderful character-driven drama that takes place along the Maryland coast. Keen eyes will recognize star Tara Devon Gallagher's name from Mad Hot Ballroom, and she apparently rules this film alongside Sarah Paulson.

Adam & Steve

Adam & Steve [limited]
Director: Craig Chester
Stars: Craig Chester, Malcolm Gets, Parker Posey (Full Cast)
Studio: TLA Releasing

The Plot: Nearly 20 years after their tragic, abortive one-night stand, Adam (Chester) and Steve (Gets) meet up again -- both of them blissfully unaware of their prior offense. As they fall in love, however, clues and reminders cause them to think they might have first met under less than romantic circumstances.

THE BUZZ: 80s nostalgia, baby laxative-laced cocaine, and Parker Posey in a fatsuit are the selling points of this queer comedy by first-time director Craig Chester (who supported Posey in The Misadventures of Margaret). With cameos by handfuls of NYC scenesters and a performance by a group called the "Dazzle Dancers," A&S; sounds like an unmissable old-school Parker P. comedy.

Message Boards: Adam and Steve is set to open on March 31st|Chris Kattan in the Current Issue of Out Magazine

Brick

Brick [LA/NY]
Director: Rian Johnson
Stars: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lukas Haas, Emilie de Ravin (Full Cast)
Studio: Focus Features

The Plot: A loner (Gordon-Levitt) drags himself through his high school's underbelly in an attempt to find out what happened to his ex-girlfriend (DeRavin), who reached out to him right before she vanished.

THE BUZZ: Something tells us Brick might just be the cult film of the year. Maybe it's just our Joseph Gordon-Levitt bias (we still flash back to his performance in Mysterious Skin), but we can back up our claim: this combination of dark comedy and film noir already has earlybirds hooked, and you have to admit the trailer leaves a lasting impression.

Drawing Restraint 9

Drawing Restraint 9 [3/29 -- NY]
Director: Matthew Barney
Stars: Matthew Barney, Bjrk (Full Cast)
Studio: IFC Films

The Plot: A love story focused on two Western guests (Barney and Bjrk) aboard on a Japanese whaling ship.

THE BUZZ: Shinto customs, an exploration of "self-imposed resistance and creativity," and the molding, halfing, and reforming of an expansive Vaseline sculpture dominate the latest work from artist Matthew Barney (the Cremaster cycle). Composed by and co-starring Barney's wife, Bjrk, the collaboration is likely to broaden Barney's fan base during its art-house run, and Cremaster devotees will rejoice in the prosthetics designed by Gabriel Bartalos. Indie rockers take heed: Will Oldham sings a song at the beginning of the near-wordless film.
