Friends with Money

Friends with Money [limited]
Director: Nicole Holofcener
Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Frances McDormand, Catherine Keener (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: Olivia (Aniston), a recently unemployed teacher, finds herself unsure about her future and her relationships with her rich-and-successful friends (McDormand, Cusack, and Keener).

THE BUZZ: Money might just push writer-director Nicole Holofcener into the big time, as her last project, Lovely & Amazing resonated with audiences and critics alike. Aniston's Olivia is the focus here, but like Holofcener's other films, every character goes through some kind of change, or crisis. Personally, I can't wait for the dynamics between Catherine Keener and Jason Isaacs, who play married screenwriters whose relationship is tested by a recent business deal. The Sundance buzz has been mild (it was the festival's opening film), but does that mean anything anymore?

The Benchwarmers

The Benchwarmers
Director: Dennis Dugan
Stars: David Spade, Jon Heder, Rob Schneider (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Releasing

The Plot: In an attempt to right things from their respective childhoods, Ritchie (Spade), Clark (Heder), and Gus (Schneider) form a three-player baseball team to compete against standard little league squads.

THE BUZZ: This movie was originally going to be made way back when Rob Schneider was popular and Chris Farley was alive (and going to co-star). The big man's role is in the hands of Napoleon Dynamite himself, and we're wondering: Is Jon Heder already more popular than Schneider and David Spade ... combined? Producer Adam Sandler's hoping this will be a hit by taking a decent-sized role and helping out with the screenplay. Sony, however, is staying silent on the sidelines while critics notably cry foul about the studio's lack of advance screenings. You make the call.

Phat Girlz

Phat Girlz
Director: Nnegest Likk
Stars: Mo'Nique, Kendra C. Johnson (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures

The Plot: An aspiring plus size fashion designer (Mo'Nique) struggles to find love and acceptance.

THE BUZZ: Mo'Nique is back in the 0-6 with this low budget indie (which will rake it in on DVD) and a TV deal that looks more lucrative than The Parkers ever was.

Take the Lead

Take the Lead
Director: Liz Friedlander
Stars: Antonio Banderas, Rob Brown, Yaya DaCosta (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: A former professional dancer (Banderas) volunteers to teach dance in the New York public school system. While his background first clashes with his students' tastes, together they create a completely new style of dance.

THE BUZZ: Hey, this sounds like Mad Hot Ballroom. Wait, it is, it's just been dramatized so more people will see the story of dancer Pierre Dulane. With this performance, let's hope Banderas doesn't take the same liberties as he did when he sang Jorge Drexler's song at the 2005 Oscars. We're a bit surprised that New Line's going wide with this one.
P.S. America's Next Top Model fans should keep an eye out for cycle 3 runner-up Yaya DaCosta in a starring role.

Review: 3 out of 10 stars: Perhaps this is just a case of bad timing for New Line Cinema. The studio that Freddy Kruger built already had Take the Lead in the can as Mad Hot Ballroom, a documentary on New York City public school kids and the adults who teach them to rumba, tango, etc., started to cash in on its film festival hype for Paramount Classics...more

Lucky Number Slevin

Lucky Number Slevin
Director: Paul McGuigan
Stars: Josh Hartnett, Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman (Full Cast)
Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)

The Plot: A case of mistaken identity lands a man (Hartnett) in the middle of a murder being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Adding more tension to his situation is the presence of a relentless detective (Tucci) and an assassin (Willis) who are both out to get him.

THE BUZZ: May Slevin bring Paul McGuigan the success for which he's been searching. The director partners with screenwriter Jason Smilovic (from the so-good-let's-cancel-it TV show Karen Sisco) for his follow up to the disappointing Wicker Park; star Hartnett reunites with McGuigan and gets the support he so desperately needs from a cast which includes Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, and Stanley Tucci. Here's a link to the international trailer.

On a Clear Day

On a Clear Day [limited]
Director: Gaby Dellal
Stars: Peter Mullan, Brenda Blethyn, Billy Boyd (Full Cast)
Studio: Focus Features

The Plot: A middle-aged shipyard engineer (Mullan) looks to improve things for himself, and for his family, by swimming the English Channel.

THE BUZZ: Reviews of Mullan's performance have been strong, though the rest of the movie is typically cast off as derivative serio-comedy. Still how do you resist Mullan partnered with Brenda Blethyn?

When Do We Eat?

When Do We Eat? [limited]
Director: Salvador Litvak
Stars: Lesley Ann Warren, Michael Lerner, Shiri Appleby (Full Cast)
Studio: ThinkFilm

The Plot: A family's Passover gets screwy after the patriarch (Lerner) unknowingly ingests a hit of Ecstasy and subsequently tries to unite his squabbling brood.

THE BUZZ: We've had our eye on this film for a while, and are stoked for its release. Though it's an indie being distributed by an indie, the strong cast (including Lizzie McGuire moppet Adam Lamberg, Shiri Appleby, and Veronica Mars hottie Max Greenfield) has us panting for April.
