Mission: Impossible III Director: J.J. Abrams Stars: Tom Cruise , Michelle Monaghan , Ving Rhames (Full Cast )Studio: Paramount Pictures
The Plot: Plot unknown.
THE BUZZ: Jeez, the film's worldwide release is just over a month away, and we still aren't quite sure what the third mission is about. (Does Paramount have any clue?) The trailer only hints at what we already know: even Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as powerful as he is, looks unable to stop Tom Cruise.M:I3 has been shrouded in weirdness from the moment it was greenlit. Stars, directors, and screenwriters have come and gone, and the whole production was reportedly threatened by Cruise's stumping for Scientology when he should have been promoting War of the Worlds (a period which yielded the priceless rumor that Cruise tried to brainwash potential co-star Scarlett Johansson ). But when the pre-production hype settled and filming began, we took a look at the cast, which includes Billy Crudup, Maggie Q, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and realized that J.J. Abrams's directorial debut has little chance of self-destructing, even people are calling for a boycott of the film. Which is so cute! P.S. Rumor has it the first trailer for Oliver Stone 's World Trade Center will show before the movie.

Hoot Director: Wil Shriner Stars: Logan Lerman , Luke Wilson , Brie Larson (Full Cast )Studio: New Line Cinema
The Plot: A young man (Lerman) moves from Montana to Florida with his family, where he's compelled to engage in a fight to protect a population of endangered owls.
THE BUZZ: You're thinking, "Owls?" But don't make fun; two years ago no one would have said a documentary on penguins would have had a chance. Hoot is like a Pixar movie come to life, and I'd rather watch defiant, environmentally friendly teens than some petulant layabouts.

An American Haunting Director: Courtney Solomon Stars: Donald Sutherland , Sissy Spacek , Rachel Hurd-Wood (Full Cast )Studio: Freestyle Releasing LLC
The Plot: For three years, a spirit torments the Bell family, until it claims one of their lives.
THE BUZZ: Thanks to Emily Rose , this turn-of-the-century horror film gets a wide release. Purporting the same "based on actual events" marketing tag, Haunting goes a step further than most films of its kind; it offers an answer as to what happened to the family, and the truth of behind the Legend of the Bell Witch . Looks to thrill fans of jump-cut scares, and we hear Sutherland has a ball with his role, and Rachel Hurd-Wood (first seen in Peter Pan ) is excellent.

The Promise [limited] Director: Kaige Chen Stars: Cecilia Cheung , Dong-Kun Jang (Full Cast )Studio: Warner Independent Pictures
The Plot: Empowered by the love of a slave (Dong-kun), a royal concubine (Cheung) is given the chance to make an extraordinary decision.
THE BUZZ: Known as the most expensive Chinese film to date, the latest from director Kaige (Farewell My Concubine ) boasts cinematography by Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ) and stunt coordinator Dion Lam (Infernal Affairs , Spiderman 2 ). Originally a Weinstein Company release, Warner Independent picked up rights to the film after Harvey and Bob disagreed with the producers on how the film should be marketed (the Weinsteins saw it as an art house film, while the Chinese backers wanted a full-scale Oscar campaign).

Crazy Like a Fox [limited] Director: Richard Squires Stars: Roger Rees , Mary McDonnell (Full Cast )Studio: Innovation Film Group (IFG)
The Plot: The mad adventures of an eccentric farmer (Rees) who's cheated out of his farm by cityfolk and decides to abandon his family for a new home in a cave on the local creek.
THE BUZZ: Why don't both these actors get better film roles?

Art School Confidential Director: Terry Zwigoff Stars: Max Minghella , Sophia Myles , John Malkovich (Full Cast )Studio: Sony Pictures Classics
The Plot: Convinced that art school will put him on the path to fame, Jerome (Minghella) must come to terms with his barely-there talent, and the fact that the girl of his dreams has fallen in love with another student. Then, strangely, he's arrested as a suspected murderer, only to discover that crime might actually pay.
THE BUZZ: Can Zwigoff (Ghost World ) go 2-for-2 with adaptations of Dan Clowes's comics? This one is a tougher sell, since Confidential doesn't have the long-form cool of its predecessor (it's a one-page story, and available in Twentieth Century Eightball ), or the appeal of having Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson in its cast -- but it is one of Clowes's most popular strips ever. Zwigoff and Clowes co-wrote the screenplay, and Zwigoff deserves credit for his dead-ringer casting of Minghella as Jerome.

Poseidon Director: Wolfgang Petersen Stars: Richard Dreyfuss , Kurt Russell , Emmy Rossum (Full Cast )Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
The Plot: After a tidal wave causes a luxury ocean liner to capsize, a handful of survivors endeavor to find a way to the water's surface.
THE BUZZ: When director Petersen heads to the ocean, he creates classics (Das Boot ) and hits (The Perfect Storm ), so it's no surprise he was installed to steer this well-cast remake. With a gambler (Josh Lucas) and a stowaway (Mia Maestro) on board, we're thinking Warner Bros. is gunning for a sort-of "Lost" at sea angle. But, but ... will there be a morning after? Peace to Shelley Winters and Roddy McDowall.

Just My Luck Director: Donald Petrie Stars: Lindsay Lohan , Chris Pine (Full Cast )Studio: 20th Century Fox Pictures
The Plot: Sexy Manhattanite Ashley (Lindsay Lohan) is known to many as the luckiest woman around. After a chance encounter with a down-and-out young man (Chris Pine), however, she realizes that she's swapped her fortune for his.
THE BUZZ: Why it takes four writers to craft a vehicle for Lindsay Lohan is beyond us - then again, gawd knows how many tabloid reporters are assigned to the Lohan beat in real life. Word has it the gal partied rather heartily on the film's New Orleans set, sparking word of a terrible performance and numerous delays. Hey, didn't we hear the same thing about Herbie: Fully Loaded ? Lohan did fine there, as did the movie, which racked up a surprising $65 million. Another medium-sized hit? We think so, especially since the storyline comes off as a romantic comedy version of Freaky Friday .

Goal! [limited] Director: Danny Cannon Stars: Kuno Becker , Alessandro Nivola , Anna Friel (Full Cast )Studio: Buena Vista Pictures
The Plot: An incredible sequence of events finds Santiago (Becker), a Los Angeleno with a lifelong dream to play professional soccer, granted a tryout with Newcastle United.
THE BUZZ: This first film in a planned trilogy was originally set up with director Michael Winterbottom and star Diego Luna . Retooled for CSI vet Danny Cannon and the pillow-lipped Kuno Becker (Luca, Luca ), we hear the script's roughness has been smoothed out for easy digestion. Cameos from Becks and Zindine Zidane will thrill sports fans, but is it enough to get them off the field and away from their TVs? The producers must feel like they have an international hit on their hands, as Goal! 2 is nearly completed.

Giuliani Time [limited] Director: Kevin Keating Stars: Rudolph W. Giuliani (Full Cast )Studio: Cinema Libre Studio
The Plot: A documentary that investigates the 'new' New York City that then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani claimed he helped create.
THE BUZZ: Kevin Keating and his crew dig into Giuliani's pre-9/11 career as contenders for the 2008 presidential election are coming forward. It's no secret that Giuliani has been tipped as one of the Republican frontrunners, and now the major issues he has taken credit for fixing up during his administration (crime, welfare reform, First Amendment rights) have come under the microscope.

Haven [limited] Director: Frank E. Flowers Stars: Bill Paxton , Agnes Bruckner , Orlando Bloom (Full Cast )Studio: Haven Distribution
The Plot: Acting on a tip, a shady businessman (Paxton) grabs his daughter (Bruckner) and flees to the Cayman Islands to avoid the feds. Their fate is tied to that of a local guy (Bloom) who is destined to commit a crime that will rock the nation.
THE BUZZ: Reviews from the film festival circuit indicate writer-director Frank E. Flowers has made a mess in his debut. Most people cite his poor usage of Rashomon structure as the film's main fault, as well as his inability to bring his many strands together. Still, with this cast and the right marketing angle, Haven could find an audience. We suggest likening it to The Matador .

Down in the Valley [limited] Director: David Jacobson Stars: Edward Norton , Evan Rachel Wood , David Morse (Full Cast )Studio: ThinkFilm
The Plot: Tobe (Wood) discovers passion and excitement for the first time in Harlan (Norton), a displaced cowboy who is ill-suited for the city of Los Angeles. Despite their differences, and the protests of of Tobe's father (Morse), she pursues a relationship with her mystery man, until she finds he is not at all whom he appeared to be.
THE BUZZ: Rumor has it DitV is stunning but overlong, which could prove maddening for those who go see it only for the reportedly steamy scenes between Norton and Wood. David (Dahmer ) Jacobson's direction is said to match the intensity of his two stars as he yearns to showcase LA's Western and urban disparity, and a man who represents the imbalance.

The Plot: A mischievous racoon and his sensitive best-buddy turtle along with other forest creatures try to resist the evils and temptations of encroaching suburbia.
THE BUZZ: Despite losing Jim Carrey as the main voice actor (he was replaced by Willis), DreamWorks is banking on director Johnson to get back his Antz magic after his last outing, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas sank like a stone. To buffer the film's chances, writer Kirkpatrick (James and the Giant Peach ) was brought in to co-direct (his debut), and Brother Bear 's Lorne Cameron and David Hoselton are steering the screenplay, which is based on the comic by Michael Fry.

The Plot: When their friend is murdered by local bullies, three kids have to contend with issues of grief, love, self-esteem, and -- in one case -- desire for revenge.
THE BUZZ: Five bucks says Twelve will be marketed and received like its contemporaries, namely Mean Creek and Mysterious Skin . Though the story deals with issues of underage sexuality and emotional frailty, we understand it's decidedly less controversial than director Michael Cuesta's first film, L.I.E.

X-Men: The Last Stand Director: Brett Ratner Stars: Patrick Stewart , Hugh Jackman , Halle Berry (Full Cast )Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
The Plot: A cure for "mutancy," the resurrection of a lost comrade, and the escalating tensions between mutants and humans threaten to trigger the war to end all wars.
THE BUZZ: DANGER! DANGER! BRETT RATNER ALERT! Strangely enough, director Bryan Singer left the franchise to take over Superman Returns from ... Brett Ratner. The switch has seemed to work for the Man of Steel, but there's no indication of X3 's progress at this time. We'll acknowledge the fact that Ratner is a complete comic book geek, as he waxed poetic on the X-Men legacy before filming began, and it'd take a hack of extraorindary powers to muff up the rise of Phoenix. But we're still left with some questions. Is this cast too unwieldy? Does anyone aside from Halle Berry want Storm to have a bigger part in this movie?

The Plot: A documentary on Al Gore's crusade to raise awareness on the issue of global warming.
THE BUZZ: Al Gore is promoting this film, a beefed-up version of the lecture he's toured with for years, as if he were running a second presidential campaign; he (and a crew of Secret Service agents) has hit Sundance, ShoWest, and is rumored to make an appearance at this year's Cannes Film Festival in an effort to get the word out on the cause. As you might imagine, environmental and faith-based groups are expected to keep the film in theaters over the next few months.
