The Best World War Movie Ever..., 26 August 2003

Author:

Out of the major 20th. C. war epics, I'm not to pleased with any. I love
Sergeant York, it is by far one of Coop's best, and the best World War epic
on screen, and quit possibly one of the best films ever
made!
I love the long storyline, and how it takes its time, the film could have
been longer, another 20-30 min. would have been nice, but I take what I can
get. Its not just a blowup war scene which has come so repetitive these
days. Its a drama, with the little action of war, the romance which becomes
touching for the time and a man's romance with his land.
This film, obviously based on a true story, tells so much story: In the
beginning, York in his youth drinking with friends, dinouncing to Brennan
that he has no interest in the Bible. York then works and works and works,
while developing a relationship with a woman whom he will marry. Then his
life is sparred by a strike of lightning, he rejoices and becomes a bible
buff, and really turned pathafist. Afterwords Pres. Wilson declares a
proclomation for troops, York then is off to war etc. And it tells the great
story on how he killed twenty Germans, and captured well over a hundred.
I love this story, its well ahead of its time in filmaking, this is one of
Coop's best, and features a great Coop partner in film: Walter
Brennan.
10/10 - Simply Put: Excellent...
