How the other half wake up, 30 December 2004

GMTV is a colourful relief from the regiment of BBC Breakfast. Come
Friday and the excellent Entertainment Today it often becomes more
interesting television in most respects. Jenni Falconer and Ben
Shepard's double act is entertaining in itself, but allied with Jakki
Brambles' highly polished and brilliantly judged reports from (usually)
LA it becomes a magazine of substance as well as style.
If only the same could generally be said of the standard weekday fare.
Penny Smith and John Stapleton always look a bit awkward doing the
early segment of the programme which has lost any sort of niche against
the new digital 24-hour channels (BBC, ITV, SKY: Auntie, gloss-earnest,
Hollywood UK) and the magazine remit of the main show that follows it.
This primetime hour and a half involves Smith lending her
(naughty-matron) integrity to the newsdesk whilst Eammon Holmes and
Fiona Phillips ringmaster a succession of pundits, guests and features.
The presentation is jolly and, loosely speaking, competent although the
content is at best disposable. It's considerable weakness is Phillips'
unnatural ability to patronise, misinterpret, non-sequitur and
generally reduce any sort of language-based interaction to vacuous -
yet uniformly good-natured - gesture. Of course, she is paid to do this
to cater for not-yet-awake, mal-educated, plebian Brits who find it
something of a balm. I find it embarrassing, both to Phillips and
myself.
The B-team of Andrew Castle and Kate Garraway are less engaging than
the regulars (but far less irritating with it). Lorraine Kelly's
longstanding magazine that closes the show owes more to the lifestyle
mid-morning shows that follow it. There are lots of advertisements. No
excuses for not making a cup of tea then.
