personally, i think that spike lee's career has been off for the past few years. i was very let down by summer of sam, haven't seen girl 6 (heard it's awful), haven't seen 4 little girls, hbo documentary, which is supposed to be excellent, he got game was ok, get on the bus was good, but felt empty in hindsight. mo' better blues was the only film of spike's back catalog that i hadn't seen yet, or more than once. it reminds us of what the man is capable of when he knows exactly what the focus is. visually dazzling with great camerawork and editing. denzel is great, snipes is great, all the acting is sound. but why spike has to be in every film he creates, i don't know. he just seems to be a distraction. the late robin harris was hilarious as the stand-up man. my only two complaints about the film: like most of spike's good movies, it runs out of steam before the credits. also during some scenes the score in the background took away it's emotional impact somewhat e.g. the apartment scene with bleek (denzel) and his girl, spike's sister, bench by the brooklyn bridge. these are, however, only minor flaws. otherwise, a very entertaining and thoughtful film about jazz, artists, their craft, and love. check it out after being disappointed by "summer of sam".
