Silent Hill Director: Christophe Gans Stars: Radha Mitchell , Laurie Holden , Sean Bean (Full Cast )Studio: TriStar Pictures
The Plot: A mother (Mitchell) loses her sick daughter in a deserted town that seems to be controlled by a dark force.
THE BUZZ: When it comes to horror in 2006, blood, guts, and remakes have ruled the box office, which leaves Silent Hill in a curious pose. It looks smarter than everything that has preceded it this year, but could that prove to be its undoing? When this movie makes $50 million and this one bombs, we don't feel we can estimate the fate of a movie that doesn't fit any mold. However, we do know that Radha Mitchell and Boromir will be hot together, even if they aren't in, like, the same dimension? Just sayin'.

American Dreamz Director: Paul Weitz Stars: Hugh Grant , Dennis Quaid , Mandy Moore (Full Cast )Studio: Universal Pictures
The Plot: The new season of "American Dreamz," the wildly popular television singing contest, has captured the country's attention, and the competition looks to be between a young Midwestern gal (Moore) and a showtunes-loving guy from Orange County (Golzari). Recently awakened President Staton (Quaid) even wants in on the craze, as he signs up for the potentially explosive season finale.
THE BUZZ: With each new movie, it's getting harder and harder to imagine that Paul Weitz first directed American Pie . We've heard all sorts of rumors about what will happen on- and off-stage at the American Idol -like program, but we're excited to see Dennis Quaid portray the TV-obsessed President of the United States, Willem Dafoe hold things down as the VP, and to watch Mandy Moore ape Kelly Clarkson.

The Sentinel Director: Clark Johnson Stars: Michael Douglas , Kiefer Sutherland , Kim Basinger (Full Cast )Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
The Plot: A disgraced special agent (Douglas) works to foil a plot to assassinate the U.S. President.
THE BUZZ: Doesn't this feel like it should be a Michael Douglas thriller from twenty years ago - except with Douglas in the Kiefer Sutherland, go-getter role? Swap out Sutherland for Douglas, put Gene Hackman in the elder statesman lead, Anne Archer in for Kim Basinger as the long-suffering wife, and .... hmmm, for the Eva Longoria role, some ingenue who's totally of the moment.... got it: Kelly McGillis! Say hello to 1986, Douglas-thriller style!

Somersault [limited] Director: Cate Shortland Stars: Abbie Cornish , Sam Worthington , Lynette Curran (Full Cast )Studio: Magnolia Pictures
The Plot: Life-altering challenges continue to present themselves for Heidi (Cornish) after she's kicked out of the house for sleeping with her mother's boyfriend.
THE BUZZ: There's a lot riding on Cate Shortland's debut feature. In her native Australia, the filmmaking community is looking at Somersault as the country's best chance for international success -- a feat which no Aussie film has managed to achieve in quite some time. Fittingly, the film has earned heaps of awards and praise at home; elsewhere, its reception has been fair at best, though that hasn't stopped Cornish from lining up a series of increasingly high profile roles. Look for her to experiment with needle drugs with Heath Ledger in Candy , then a supporting role in A Good Year . She has Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Stop-Loss on deck.

The Plot: A handful of college buds reunite for a wedding in Los Angeles, setting off a chain reaction of dramatic confrontations and tawdry hookups.
THE BUZZ: Why did we know Roger (The Rules of Attraction ) Avary had something to do with this (he plays a director to James Van Der Beek 's drunken actor)? It must be all the sexy faces and the promise of lurid behavior. Standing Still wants to be this year's Just Friends , and with an R rating and we think it has a chance at success ... on DVD.

In Her Line of Fire [limited] Director: Brian Trenchard-Smith Stars: Mariel Hemingway , David Keith , David Millbern (Full Cast )Studio: Regent Releasing
The Plot: When the Vice President's plane goes down near a remote South American island, he is kidnapped by rebel forces and held for ransom. It is up to his female Secret Service agent (Hemingway) and a his secretary (Bennett) to infiltrate the camp and save him
THE BUZZ: Sapphic overtones abound in this Rambo meets "West Wing" thriller from seasoned B-movie director Brian Trenchard-Smith. As our boss said, in ten years this will probably be re-released as a "Quentin Taratino Presents" film. While I'd never see this in a theater, I'll probably watch it everytime it's on Starz.

The Plot: It's up to Cindy Campbell (Faris) to save the world from a Tr-Ipod attack on Earth.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Rumor has it Scary Movie 5 is ready for the green light, as soon as SM4 's opening weekend receipts are counted. With a crowd-friendly PG-13 rating and the team of director Zucker, writer Craig Mazan, and producer Robert Weiss in place, we're expecting a major triumph. And if a fifth installment is inevitable, it's not like they will hurt for material over the next year or two; just scan our list of summer movies and you could write 50 pages of jokes in an hour. The Plot: With the Ice Age at its end, Diego (Leary), Manfred (Romano), and Sid (Leguizamo) are worried that the melting ice will destroy their valley. The animals decide to take it upon themselves to unite and warn everyone about the situation.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Whoa, it's like the animated The Day After Tomorrow ; hopefully no one will get on the little sloth and his pals for promoting bad science or anything. Snaps to this sequel's topicality, and there's no question it should top its illustrious predecessor's success.
Review: 6 out of 10 stars : The caveman toddler, who was the emotional core of the original Ice Age film, isn't in Ice Age: The Meltdown . Since the little grub didn't have a single line one might expect that the filmmakers could forge ahead without him without much consequence. His absence is noticed, however, as with him has gone any particular attempt to mount any story at all leaving Meltdown as a string of sight gags and clever conceits with prehistoric animals...more

The Benchwarmers Director: Dennis Dugan Stars: David Spade , Jon Heder , Rob Schneider (Full Cast )Studio: Sony Pictures Releasing
The Plot: In an attempt to right things from their respective childhoods, Ritchie (Spade), Clark (Heder), and Gus (Schneider) form a three-player baseball team to compete against standard little league squads.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: This movie was originally going to be made way back when Rob Schneider was popular and Chris Farley was alive (and going to co-star). The big man's role is in the hands of Napoleon Dynamite himself, and we're wondering: Is Jon Heder already more popular than Schneider and David Spade ... combined? Producer Adam Sandler's hoping this will be a hit by taking a decent-sized role and helping out with the screenplay. Sony, however, is staying silent on the sidelines while critics notably cry foul about the studio's lack of advance screenings. You make the call.

The Wild Director: Steve 'Spaz' Williams Stars: Kiefer Sutherland , James Belushi , Eddie Izzard (Full Cast )Studio: Walt Disney Pictures
The Plot: A teenage lion is accidentally shipped from the New York Zoo to Africa. Now running free, his zoo pals -- a lion, a giraffe, an anaconda, a koala, and a squirrel -- must put aside their differences to help bring him back.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: I don't have children, but I'd still be hesitant to shell out big money to take my (perfect, well-behaved) family to something with such a seemingly base sense of humor. On top of that, the animation looks incredibly behind the times. Apparently, toy manufacturers and retailers don't see much value in the film, either; Wal-Mart, Toys 'R' Us, Hasbro, and others all declined to seek licenses to sell the movie-related merch. So somewhere in the San Fernando Valley is a warehouse full of lonely furries.

Take the Lead Director: Liz Friedlander Stars: Antonio Banderas , Rob Brown , Yaya DaCosta (Full Cast )Studio: New Line Cinema
The Plot: A former professional dancer (Banderas) volunteers to teach dance in the New York public school system. While his background first clashes with his students' tastes, together they create a completely new style of dance.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Hey, this sounds like Mad Hot Ballroom . Wait, it is , it's just been dramatized so more people will see the story of dancer Pierre Dulane. With this performance, let's hope Banderas doesn't take the same liberties as he did when he sang Jorge Drexler 's song at the 2005 Oscars. We're a bit surprised that New Line's going wide with this one. P.S. America's Next Top Model fans should keep an eye out for cycle 3 runner-up Yaya DaCosta in a starring role.
Review: 3 out of 10 stars: Perhaps this is just a case of bad timing for New Line Cinema. The studio that Freddy Kruger built already had Take the Lead in the can as Mad Hot Ballroom , a documentary on New York City public school kids and the adults who teach them to rumba, tango, etc., started to cash in on its film festival hype for Paramount Classics...more

Inside Man Director: Spike Lee Stars: Denzel Washington , Clive Owen , Jodie Foster (Full Cast )Studio: Universal Pictures
The Plot: A bank robber (Owen) plays cat-and-mouse with a cop (Washington), who's facing increasing pressure to foil his opponent's intricate plot. The stand-off is further complicated and confused by the arrival of a power broker (Foster) who requests a private meeting with the perp.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Does Spike Lee have the restraint to pull off a straight-up thriller? As he guns for his first true commercial hit, everyone involved in the production would have to screw up extra bad to dull this one down. But, uh, isn't the title kind of a spoiler in and of itself? We don't really care, as this tribute to 70's crime thrillers has us more curious than anything in its path.
Review: 7 out of 10 stars : I'll be honest -- I had pretty much given up on Spike Lee . I was dazzled by the fun of She's Gotta Have It and the energy of Do the Right Thing , and happy to bask in Lee's harnessing of Denzel Washington 's star power in Mo Better Blues and as Malcolm X ...more

Lucky Number Slevin Director: Paul McGuigan Stars: Josh Hartnett , Ben Kingsley , Morgan Freeman (Full Cast )Studio: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)
The Plot: A case of mistaken identity lands a man (Hartnett) in the middle of a murder being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Adding more tension to his situation is the presence of a relentless detective (Tucci) and an assassin (Willis) who are both out to get him.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: May Slevin bring Paul McGuigan the success for which he's been searching. The director partners with screenwriter Jason Smilovic (from the so-good-let's-cancel-it TV show Karen Sisco ) for his follow up to the disappointing Wicker Park ; star Hartnett reunites with McGuigan and gets the support he so desperately needs from a cast which includes Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, and Stanley Tucci. Thank You for Smoking Director: Jason Reitman Stars: Aaron Eckhart , Cameron Bright , Maria Bello (Full Cast )Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
The Plot: Nick Naylor (Eckhart) earns a paycheck as Big Tobacco's chief spokesman and administer of spin, a job that makes it tough for him to [remain] a role model for his 12-year-old son.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Thank You has been classified as satire-lite from the number of critics who saw Jason Reitman's (son of Ivan) debut film at the Toronto International Film Festival. That didn't stop indie-minded studios from jockeying for the rights to the picture; in fact, the two heads of Paramount Classics were fired when their handshake agreement fell through (Fox Searchlight wound up with the film). That's probably not enough to stir up audience interest, but the soft political barbs, excellent cast, and Sundance buzz just might be. But there are those who will probably stay away now that the sex scene featuring Katie Holmes has been cut.

Failure to Launch Director: Tom Dey Stars: Matthew McConaughey , Sarah Jessica Parker , Kathy Bates (Full Cast )Studio: Paramount Pictures
The Plot: A mom and dad set their son (McConaughey) up with the perfect-girlfriend-for-hire (Parker) in a plot to get him to finally move out of their home.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: For us, the question mark here is hovering not only over director Tom Dey (Showtime , Shanghai Knights ), but screenwriters Tom Astle and Matt Ember, who are both making their feature debuts. Oh, and the casting of Terry Bradshaw as the dad ... Is this going to be one of those romantic comedies that works solely because the actors have a flicker of chemistry (even though there were last-minute rumors of McConaughey not quite getting his co-star)? And while we're on the subject, why do we get the feeling development executives think that every good blonde deserves McConaughey?
Review: 5 out of 10 stars : When exactly did Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker become trademarked, commodified versions of themselves? It's a little easier to pin it down with home-boy McConaughey, who went from being a nifty Dazed and Confused slacker to Joel Schmuacher 's khaki-butted discovery in A Time To Kill to naked-bongo-player stoner to -- it's in here somewhere...more

The Plot: A shadowy freedom fighter known only as "V" (Weaving) uses terrorist tactics to fight totalitarian England. Upon rescuing Evey Hammond (Portman) from the secret police, he finds a frightened woman he can mold into his ally.
User Rating:
THE BUZZ: Remember, remember that this was originally set for release last November, but Warner Bros. blinked after the London bombings and decided to push the opening to spring. Still, producer Joel Silver has indicated that the film will not skimp on its depiction of the city's tube lines being destroyed by a terrorist act. Let's hope that, in the hands of director/Wachowski Brothers protege McTeigue, Alan Moore's graphic novel is nutured with the same kind of care that made Sin City the worldwide hit that no one expected.
Review: 7 out of 10 stars : A noted historian once wrote, "An attraction to anarchy is the ultimate indulgence of a bourgeois culture" and, if that's true, then V for Vendetta is one of the first bon-bons of our post-9/11 society.
