Poor Ruth, she is a hopeless street junkie and now she is pregnant.
Soon, she becomes the central figure in the pro-choice vs. pro-life
debate. Devastating funny social satire that tries its very best not to
take sides, making fun of both sides of the issue. All pro-choice
people are pretentious, homosexual and radical, while the pro-life
group is presented as religious fanatics, rednecks and narrow-minded. I
agree comedy is a very subjective thing, so all I can say is that this
movie had me laughing on the floor from beginning to end. As Ruth,
Laura Dern is great, Burt Reynolds is a hoot as the conservative leader
and Tippi Hedren is wonderful in the small role of Reynolds' liberal
nemesis. If you liked Payne's film Election (another favorite of mine),
you are going to love this movie.
