The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code
Director: Ron Howard
Stars: Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: An academic (Hanks) and a cryptographer (Tautou) unravel a murder that occurred in the Louvre. Clues hidden in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci lead them to a religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years.

THE BUZZ: The Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind gets even more cerebral with TDVC, the most high-profile bestseller adaptation since Harry Potter. Director Howard, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, and producer Brian Grazer have assembled a (nearly) letter-perfect principal cast that should please the legions who still can't part with Dan Brown's novel some two years after its first printing. We'll dare to say the film has stirred more controversy than even United 93, what with the Vatican, Opus Dei, the Italian Interior Ministry, and a certain Russian art historian heavily laying into the film (and the book) in the weeks before its release.

Over the Hedge

Over the Hedge
Director: Tim Johnson Karey Kirkpatrick
Stars: Bruce Willis, Garry Shandling, Gene Wilder (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: A mischievous racoon and his sensitive best-buddy turtle along with other forest creatures try to resist the evils and temptations of encroaching suburbia.

THE BUZZ: Despite losing Jim Carrey as the main voice actor (he was replaced by Willis), DreamWorks is banking on director Johnson to get back his Antz magic after his last outing, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas sank like a stone. To buffer the film's chances, writer Kirkpatrick (James and the Giant Peach) was brought in to co-direct (his debut), and Brother Bear's Lorne Cameron and David Hoselton are steering the screenplay, which is based on the comic by Michael Fry. So ... where's the big promotional push?

See No Evil

See No Evil
Director: Gregory Dark
Stars: Glen Jacobs (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films

The Plot: Sentenced to community service, a group of teens are dispatched to fix up a ramshackle hotel. Little do they know the hotel is home to a manical killer who looks to murder them one by one.

THE BUZZ: Shhh! Quiet! What's that noise? It's the sound of See No Evil barely breaking even. The WWE's Kane kills the kids. The sports entertainment clearing house has pacted with Lionsgate to distribute The Condemned later this year.

Twelve and Holding

Twelve and Holding [limited]
Director: Michael Cuesta
Stars: Conor Donovan, Jesse Camacho, Zoe Weizenbaum (Full Cast)
Studio: IFC Films

The Plot: When a young boy is murdered by local bullies, three kids contend with issues of grief, love, self-esteem, and a brother's desire for revenge.

THE BUZZ: Five bucks says Twelve will be marketed and received like its contemporaries, namely Mean Creek and Mysterious Skin. Though the story deals with issues of underage sexuality and emotional frailty, we understand it's decidedly less controversial than director Michael Cuesta's first film, L.I.E. As with Crash and American Gun, the film looks to comment on the proliferation of guns in our society.

Mission: Impossible III

Mission: Impossible III
Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Tom Cruise, Michelle Monaghan, Ving Rhames (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: Newly married, semi-retired secret agent Ethan Hunt (Cruise) is once again dispatched by the IMF; this time, he confronts a ruthless arms dealer (Hoffman) who will stop at nothing to obtain a mysterious, deadly object.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: Word had it that new daddy Cruise would be curtailing promotional duties for the film, but no such luck -- the man has been everywhere, though as Gawker put it, we hardly recognize Cruise without Katie Holmes attached to him at the shoulder. Early reviews are praising the action acumen of director J.J. Abrams, but if you ask us, the plot sounds a lot like Alias -- as told from Michael Vartan's point of view.

M:I3 has been shrouded in weirdness from the moment it was greenlit. Stars, directors, and screenwriters have come and gone, and the whole production was reportedly threatened by Cruise's stumping for Scientology when he should have been promoting War of the Worlds (a period which yielded the priceless rumor that Cruise tried to brainwash potential co-star Scarlett Johansson). But when the pre-production hype settled and filming began, we took a look at the cast, which includes Billy Crudup, Maggie Q, and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, and realized that J.J. Abrams's directorial debut has little chance of self-destructing, even people are calling for a boycott of the film. Which is so cute!

P.S. Rumor has it the first trailer for Oliver Stone's World Trade Center will show before the movie.

Poseidon

Poseidon
Director: Wolfgang Petersen
Stars: Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: After a tidal wave causes a luxury ocean liner to capsize, a handful of survivors endeavor to find a way to the water's surface.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: When director Petersen heads to the ocean, he creates classics (Das Boot) and hits (The Perfect Storm), so it's no surprise he was installed to steer this well-cast remake. With a gambler (Josh Lucas) and a stowaway (Mia Maestro) on board, we're thinking Warner Bros. is gunning for a sort-of "Lost" at sea angle. But, but ... will there be a morning after? Pirates have circled the movie, calling it the first bomb of the summer. (Wasn't that M:I3?) Peace to Shelley Winters and Roddy McDowall.

R.V.

R.V.
Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
Stars: Robin Williams, Cheryl Hines, Kristin Chenoweth (Full Cast)
Studio: Columbia Pictures

The Plot: Bob Munro (Williams) and his dysfunctional family rent an RV for a roadtrip to the Colorado Rockies, where they encounter a bizarre community of campers.

User Rating: *****_____

THE BUZZ: It's like Johnson Family Vacation, with Robin Williams crazier than you've ever seen him before! Fortunately co-starring "Arrested Development"'s Will Arnett and Tony Hale!! Meh, we'll just wait it out til Little Miss Sunshine hits theaters in July.

Just My Luck

Just My Luck
Director: Donald Petrie
Stars: Lindsay Lohan, Chris Pine (Full Cast)
Studio: 20th Century Fox Pictures

The Plot: Sexy Manhattanite Ashley (Lohan) is known to many as the luckiest woman around. After a chance encounter with a down-and-out young man (Pine), however, she realizes that she's swapped her fortune for his.

User Rating: *****_____

THE BUZZ: Why it takes four writers to craft a vehicle for Lindsay Lohan is beyond us - then again, gawd knows how many tabloid reporters are assigned to the Lohan beat in real life. (We do know, however, the a bunch of "Saturday Night Live" cast members staged a Li-Lo intervention when she hosted the show in April.) Word has it the gal partied rather heartily on the film's New Orleans set, sparking word of a terrible performance and numerous delays. Hey, didn't we hear the same thing about Herbie: Fully Loaded? Lohan did fine there, as did the movie, which racked up a surprising $65 million. Another medium-sized hit? We think so, especially since the storyline comes off as a romantic comedy version of Freaky Friday.

An American Haunting

An American Haunting
Director: Courtney Solomon
Stars: Donald Sutherland, Sissy Spacek, Rachel Hurd-Wood (Full Cast)
Studio: Freestyle Releasing LLC

The Plot: During the early part of the 19th century, in Red River, Tennessee, the Bell family is tormented by a spirit that promises to kill one of the family members.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: Thanks to Emily Rose, this turn-of-the-century horror film gets a wide release. Purporting the same "based on actual events" marketing tag, Haunting goes a step further than most films of its kind; it offers an answer as to what happened to the family, and the truth of behind the Legend of the Bell Witch. Looks to thrill fans of jump-cut scares, and we hear Sutherland has a ball with his role, and Rachel Hurd-Wood (first seen in Peter Pan) is excellent.

United 93

United 93
Director: Paul Greengrass
Stars: David Alan Basche, Olivia Thirlby, Liza Coln-Zayas (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: A real time account of the events on United Flight 93, one of the planes hijacked on 9/11 that crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania when passengers foiled the terrorist plot.

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: British director Greengrass handles the first feature film about 9/11 (Oliver Stone's World Trade Center will come out this August). "Controversial" doesn't even begin to describe the public's reaction to the film. After receiving complaints from audience members, the AMC Loews theater in New York City's Lincoln Square yanked the trailer, though it is still playing in other cities at this time. Despite the fact that Universal will donate 10 percent of the first three days' grosses to the Flight 93 Memorial Fund, something tells us boycotts are in the works.

Stick It

Stick It
Director: Jessica Bendinger
Stars: Missy Peregrym, Jeff Bridges, Vanessa Lengies (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: After a run-in with the law, Haley Graham (Peregrym) is forced to return to the world from which she fled some years ago. Enrolled in an elite gymnastics program run by the legendary Burt Vickerman (Bridges), Haley's rebellious attitude gives way to something that just might be called team spirit.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: Jessica Bendinger (Bring It On) gets back to the genre that first brought her success, and this time the clever writer is in the director's chair, too. And, actually? Stick It sounds like a reimagining of the cheerleading comedy, just seen through the eyes of Eliza Dushku's character, Missy Pantone. All the elements are in place -- mean girls, slangy, motor-mouth dialogue, hot action sequences -- and there's no reason why Missy Peregrym can't go large with this one as Kirsten Dunst did back in 2000. We just really, really hope that Sparky Polastri and his Spirit Fingers make an appearance.

Ice Age: The Meltdown

Ice Age: The Meltdown
Director: Carlos Saldanha
Stars: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary (Full Cast)
Studio: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

The Plot: With the Ice Age at its end, Diego (Leary), Manfred (Romano), and Sid (Leguizamo) are worried that the melting ice will destroy their valley. The animals decide to take it upon themselves to unite and warn everyone about the situation.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: Whoa, it's like the animated The Day After Tomorrow; hopefully no one will get on the little sloth and his pals for promoting bad science or anything. Snaps to this sequel's topicality, and there's no question it should top its illustrious predecessor's success.

Review: 6 out of 10 stars: The caveman toddler, who was the emotional core of the original Ice Age film, isn't in Ice Age: The Meltdown. Since the little grub didn't have a single line one might expect that the filmmakers could forge ahead without him without much consequence. His absence is noticed, however, as with him has gone any particular attempt to mount any story at all leaving Meltdown as a string of sight gags and clever conceits with prehistoric animals...more

Akeelah and the Bee

Akeelah and the Bee
Director: Doug Atchison
Stars: Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, Keke Palmer (Full Cast)
Studio: Lions Gate Films

The Plot: A gifted young girl (Palmer) from the Crenshaw district in South Los Angeles trains for the National Spelling Bee with the help of a reclusive professor (Fishburne).

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: Though it seems like she's been teasing us forever, Akeelah's trailer is still charming, and, despite a few voices of protest, most reviewers are clearly in love with this young girl from Crenshaw. And with Starbucks behind her, look for her to lay waste to smaller movies and other competitors.

Hoot

Hoot
Director: Wil Shriner
Stars: Logan Lerman, Luke Wilson, Brie Larson (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: A young man (Lerman) moves from Montana to Florida with his family, where he's compelled to engage in a fight to protect a population of endangered owls.

User Rating: *****_____

THE BUZZ: You're thinking, "Owls?" But don't make fun; two years ago no one would have said a documentary on penguins would have had a chance. Hoot is like a Pixar movie come to life, and I'd rather watch defiant, environmentally friendly teens than some petulant layabouts.
