Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Director: Gore Verbinski
Stars: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley (Full Cast)
Studio: Walt Disney Studios

The Plot: When Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds out he owes a blood debt to ghostly Davey Jones, he desperately searches for a way to pay it off, or else face eternal damnation in the afterworld. And he's not above interrupting the wedding plans of Will Turner (Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) to do it.

THE BUZZ: All the major players are back -- including director Verbinski and the original screenwriters -- and Disney took a cue from Lord of the Rings and shot back-to-back sequels (PotC: World's End arrives next May). It will be interesting to see where this one ranks once the trilogy is complete, and it's interesting to note this is one of the few times in the history of movie marketing that a romance storyline has been played down, as the fawn eyes between Will and Elizabeth have taken a back seat (rightly) to Cap'n Jack.

Trailer Buzz: We hear the teaser for Michael Bay's Transformers will debut in front of the good Captain.

A Scanner Darkly

A Scanner Darkly
Director: Richard Linklater
Stars: Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr. (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Independent Pictures

The Plot: Undercover cop Fred (Keanu Reeves) is one of many agents hooked on the popular drug Substance D, which causes its users to develop split personalities. Fred, for instance, is also Bob, a notorious drug dealer. Along with his superior officers, Fred sets up an elaborate scheme to catch Bob and tear down his operation.

THE BUZZ: Linklater adapted Philip K. Dick's novel -- a s/f fan favorite -- in a fashion that reportedly tickled the Dick estate. As he did with Waking Life, the director shot a live-action version of the film, then had it animated. This is one of those projects that infuriates genre purists; Darkly also seems to be confounding Linklater's fans, who love the material but question the star. While that drama plays out, please know that Linklater is going for a much more realistic type of animation this time, not the wavy, stoned style of Waking Life. Warner Bros. must have liked what they eventually saw, as the film was granted this high profile release date after being delayed for a few months.

Strangers with Candy

Strangers with Candy [limited]
Director: Paul Dinello
Stars: Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert, Paul Dinello (Full Cast)
Studio: ThinkFilm

The Plot: Fresh from prison, 47-year-old Jerri Blank (Sedaris), moves back in with her comatose father (Hedaya), his new wife (Rush), and her son (Cross). A self-admitted "boozer, user, and loser," Jerri re-enrolls as a freshman at Flat Point High School, where she'll have to use his street smarts to make alliances, get out of tricky situations, and ultimately help a team of students win the state science fair.

THE BUZZ: With Sarah Jessica Parker playing a horny grief counselor, and Philip Seymour Hoffman and Allison Janney also added to the mix, this reimagining of the depraved Comedy Central TV show (which aired from 1999-2000 and is a hit on DVD) promises to be as hilarious as it is offensive. No matter how many celebrity cameos there are, no matter the legal troubles that led to a release delay and distributor change, this is all about Sedaris. And even if die-hard fans are being super whiny pee-pants over the differences between the show and film (why a new Derek? why a new Orlando? wah!), we have a feeling the cult movie of 2006 is here.

Select:
Superman Returns

Superman Returns
Director: Bryan Singer
Stars: Brandon Routh, Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: After a mysterious absence of several years, the Man of Steel (Routh) returns to Metropolis, only to find Lex Luthor (Spacey) is back to his old tricks -- and Lois Lane (Bosworth) may have moved on.

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: The poster for this movie should be a revolving door, since so many directors and stars have come and gone we don't remember who did what when. Singer abandoned X3 for this, and ironically, new X3 director Brett Ratner was once attached. After a Scarlett O'Hara-style search, newcomer Routh was picked to fill out the red and blue tights, and Bosworth trumped a number of other actresses for the role of Lois Lane. Warner Bros. is betting heavy on this, and you can bet there are knives out as well as fanboys. All we can say is, you better not mess up, Mr. Singer. The final trailer is so loaded with themes, we don't feel the need to point them out.

The Devil Wears Prada

The Devil Wears Prada
Director: David Frankel
Stars: Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Adrian Grenier (Full Cast)
Studio: Fox 2000 Pictures

The Plot: A fashion-backwards young woman (Hathaway) scores a coveted job working for Miranda Priestly (Streep), the notorious editor-in-chief of Runway magazine in New York City.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: An evil, regal Streep and a lovely, innocent Hathaway make this confection all the sweeter -- though don't keep your expectations high. Like the book, we expect the movie to be mostly concept with little substance. And psst, lean in closer... rumor has it Vogue editrix Anna Wintour (on whom Streep's character is reportedly based) is none too pleased with the movie, and was using her powers to keep the movie from filming in key fashion locations. Such dirt -- even if it isn't true!

Click

Click
Director: Frank Coraci
Stars: Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, Christopher Walken (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Releasing

The Plot: Workaholic architect Michael Newman (Sandler) comes to own a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life. But complications arise when the remote starts to overrule his choices.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: Does this sound a bit like Bruce Almighty? Back in 2003, Bruce writers Steve Koren and Mark O'Keefe's spec script was purchased by Columbia as an ideal project for Sandler. After a few production delays, the comedian cozied up to the director who guided The Waterboy, one of his biggest successes to date. Don't let Click's dramatic overtones fool you into thinking this is another form of Spanglish, as we hear the script is very funny and the production went so well that the film was pushed into summer blockbuster season. Kate, we hope you and your huzz bought a huge new place with your paycheck ...

Cars

Cars
Director: John Lasseter Joe Ranft
Stars: Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Paul Newman (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: En route to a big race, a hot-shot stock-car known as Lightning McQueen (Wilson) gets waylaid in the town of Radiator Springs. During his idle time, McQueen befriends some locals who help him begin to realize that there might be more important things in life than fame and fortune.

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: With an impressive opening, despite less-than-stellar expectations, Cars should stay the course even with Garfield 2 on its tail and Superman Returns looking to be a movie made not for families, but for men with low self esteem ...

Nacho Libre

Nacho Libre
Director: Jared Hess
Stars: Jack Black, Ana de la Reguera, Efren Ramirez (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: An unskilled cook (Jack Black) at a Mexican monastery moonlights as a Lucha Libre wrestler in order to provide better food for his orphans, and to win the favor of the beautiful Sister Encarnacin (Ana de la Reguera).

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: Ready to finally donate that "Vote for Pedro" tee to Goodwill? Jared Hess follows up Napoleon Dynamite with a comedy loosely based on the story of a priest who moonlighted as a luchador on the Mexican professional wrestling circuit. Unless Black's antics have worn thin with audiences, Hess should have another cult hit on his hands, making him more and more attractive to studios; hopefully he'll be inspired to write and direct original stories instead of, say, taking on a Marvel movie or remake of a comedy classic. The director co-wrote this screenplay with his wife, Jerusha, and one of our favorites, Mike White.

The Lake House

The Lake House
Director: Alejandro Agresti
Stars: Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: A lonely doctor (Bullock) begins exchanging love letters with a frustrated architect (Reeves) through a mysterious postbox.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: It's good to see two fortysomething, non-blondes in a Hollywood romance. This remake of the fab South Korean film Siworae finds Argentine director Alejandro Agresti (Valentin) positioned to break through stateside. $5 says the original's sci-fi component will be diminished here, though the idea of a time-traveling Sandra Bullock is oddly compelling. Maybe she could go back and not make Miss Congeniality 2 ... Here's the teaser trailer, featuring voiceover that sounds as if it were provided by entirely different actors. Keep you ears peeled for Keanu delivering this stellar dialogue: "I bought a house. On the lake. It's beautiful. Seductive, even." Sounds like Coldplay lyrics.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift
Director: Justin Lin
Stars: Lucas Black, Zachery Ty Bryan, Bow Wow (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: To avoid a jail sentence, a young street racer (Black) heads to Japan to live with his uncle. Getting involved in the world of drift racing, he finds himself quickly in debt, and the only way to repay is to enter the Tokyo underworld.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: First Vin Diesel abandoned this franchise, and now Paul Walker? What does it say when you can't even get Paul Walker to sign to your movie? If they're lucky, the addition of director Lin (Better Luck Tomorrow) and the underground appeal of drift racing (relatively speaking, it's as big as NASCAR, except illegal) will inject some new kind of adrenaline into the mix.

Update: Okay, okay, so Diesel hasn't let Dominic Toretto fade away completely, as the actor lands an uncredited cameo at the end of the movie.

Waist Deep

Waist Deep
Director: Vondie Curtis-Hall
Stars: Tyrese Gibson, Meagan Good, Larenz Tate (Full Cast)
Studio: Focus Features

The Plot: An ex-con (Tyrese) risks his life and freedom after his son is kidnapped in a carjacking.

User Rating: ****______

THE BUZZ: Free from the action-comedy formula that burdened his first film, Gridlock'd, and the Mariah Careyness of his second, Glitter, there's hope for Vondie Curtis-Hall's latest to connect with audiences. The writer-director put his past behind him with Redemption: The Stan "Tookie" Williams Story, and for his latest, he's partnered with writer Darin Scott, who is certainly no stranger to this genre.

The Break-Up

The Break-Up
Director: Peyton Reed
Stars: Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau (Full Cast)
Studio: Universal Pictures

The Plot: After Brooke (Aniston) calls it quits with her boyfriend Gary (Vaughn), neither person is willing to move out of the condo they share. Taking the advice of their repsective friends and confidants (and a few total strangers), they both engage in mental warfare designed to force the other person to flee the premises -- until they both realize they might be fighting to keep their relationship alive.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: Jen and Vince weren't the hottest newsmakers in the weeks leading up to their joint project's release: no baby births in Namibia, no offical declaration of their love, little interest in promoting their film. Even the industry seemed to turn its back on the couple (murmurs of tankage and unfriendly reviews), but none of it ultimately seemed to matter, as The B-U dethroned The X-M with an opening weekend just shy of $40 million. We're eager to see how it holds up in the dailies (still holding strong at $2+ million a day!), and what Jen's next project will be (Vince is gearing up for a small role in Sean Penn's Into the Wild).

The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code

Stars: Tom Hanks, Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno (Full Cast)

The Plot: An academic (Hanks) and a cryptographer (Tautou) unravel a murder that occurred in the Louvre. Clues hidden in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci lead them to a religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: The Oscar-winning team behind A Beautiful Mind gets even more cerebral with TDVC, the most high-profile bestseller adaptation since Harry Potter. And the most successful, with a worldwide box office tally over $700 million. Director Ron Howard, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, producer Brian Grazer, and star Tom Hanks are being courted to make Angels & Demons, novelist Dan Brown's first adventure involving symbologist Robert Langdon.
