Sacha Baron Cohen redefines the mockumentary form with this smash hit comedy that takes his character Borat, a wide-eyed, aggressively chauvinistic, eagerly anti-Semitic journalist from a Kazakhstan that exists only in the comedian's fantasy world, across America to interview real people with inappropriate questions. They return to favor with hilariously dumbfounded responses, and a few that are equally inappropriate. (1997) Robert Carlyle leads a group of unemployed steel workers in a depressed industrial town in Sheffield, England, to put on a show� a strip show. They're hardly body beautiful models, but as Carlyle points out, that is exactly their selling point: next to the fantasy figure Chippendales, these guys are the real thing. Director Peter Cattaneo keeps the bouncy, often hilarious film from veering into farce, and the disco soundtrack and the disarming charm of the earthy characters made it a surprise stateside hit, where it also snagged Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. Madeleine Carroll, C. Aubrey Smith, Mary Astor, David Niven, and a delightfully flamboyant Douglas Fairbanks Jr. co-star in the handsome David O. Selznick production.
