Vacancy

Director: Nimrd Antal
Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Luke Wilson (Full Cast)
Studio: Screen Gems

The Plot: Mysteriously trapped inside their room at an out-of-the-way motel, a young married couple (Beckinsale and Wilson) learn they have become the stars of a slasher film.

THE BUZZ: Hard to imagine that Sarah Jessica Parker almost starred in this one ... After taking on the werewolf legacy, it's harder to picture Kate Beckinsale being snuffed out, but with Nimrod Antal (Kontroll) behind the camera, the best thing we can expect here is an original take on the overworked horror-thriller genre. Prepare for The Descent-level claustrophobia with icky voyeuristic edges. P.S. Stylish marketing campaign, by the way.

Fracture

Fracture

Director: Gregory Hoblit
Stars: Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, David Strathairn (Full Cast)
Studio: New Line Cinema

The Plot: Assistant district attorney Willy Beachum (Gosling) matches wits with the man (Hopkins) who tried to kill his wife and evaded sentencing via a series of technicalities.

THE BUZZ: Ryan Gosling gets all Clarice Starling in order to bring co-star Anthony Hopkins to justice in the latest project by Gregory Hoblit, a director who started strong (Primal Fear) only to go sour with age (Hart's War). David Strathairn plays Gosling's boss in what could be some of the best acting you'll see in a popcorn movie all year, provided Hopkins plays it cool. Now that we think of it, Strathairn could have taken the bad guy role ...

Hot Fuzz

Hot Fuzz

Director: Edgar Wright
Stars: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost (Full Cast)
Studio: Rogue Pictures

The Plot: Jealous colleagues conspire to get top London cop Nicholas Angel (Pegg) transferred to a small town. With his new partner (Frost) in tow, Angel realizes (a lot faster than anyone else) that a series of local accidents might be something a little bit more sinister.

THE BUZZ: Click here for a series of weblogs that prove the Shaun of the Dead team of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg are the most promising one-two punch working today. (No, we're not forgetting about the cuddly Nick Frost, as we heart him, too.) Apparently a new clip will be added each week, and with people such as Peter Jackson popping up on set, there's good reason to set yourself a weekly reminder. Hollywood loves to talk about how the Blighty film business is sagging; for what it's worth, Fuzz is shaping up to be the most successful UK import in years.

In the Land of Women

In the Land of Women [limited]

Director: Jon Kasdan
Stars: Adam Brody, Kristen Stewart, Meg Ryan (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: When Carter Webb (Brody) is dumped by the love of his life, he flees Los Angeles for the Michigan suburbs to live with his ailing grandmother (Dukakis). From across the street, the Hardwickes, a family of three women, help Carter rediscover himself and redefine his life.

THE BUZZ: Jon Kasdan makes his directorial debut, following in the footsteps of his father, Lawrence (The Big Chill), and brother, Jake ("Orange County", TV's "Freaks and Geeks"). We're stoked now that "The O.C." is through, so Adam Brody can out-emo Zach Braff in decent-looking romantic comedies, and that Kristen Stewart is balancing her studio projects with smaller projects such as this. Speaking of, Women was originally set-up at Warner Indie, but it was escalated to a wider release via WB proper.

The Valet

The Valet [limited]

Director: Francis Veber
Stars: Gad Elmaleh, Alice Taglioni, Daniel Auteuil (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Classics

The Plot: Franois (Elmaleh), a car service valet at a top Paris hotel, is caught by a paparazzo's camera in a picture with business tycoon Pierre Levasseur (Auteuil) and his mistress, Elena (Taglioni). In order to save his reputation, his marriage, and his affair, the resourceful Levasseur looks to control the story by setting up Franois and Elena as a pretend couple, faking out the tabloids and his wife (Kristin Scott Thomas) in the process.

THE BUZZ: An English-language remake of writer-director Francis Veber's quick-witted farce is already set-up at DreamWorks/Paramount (where it will likely become a meta examination of tabloid celebritydom). Monsieur Auteuil returns to the slapstick comedy genre after Hidden's successful tour of American art houses; M. Elmaleh and the lovely Mlle Taglioni get their first wide exposure to Stateside audiences. Whether or not the knotted-up trio can carve a niche during this busy month will depend on word of mouth.

The Tripper

The Tripper [limited]

Director: David Arquette
Stars: Jaime King, Thomas Jane, Lukas Haas (Full Cast)
Studio: Coquette Productions

The Plot: A serial killer who's obsessed with Ronald Reagan targets a bunch of hippies who are heading to the Redwood Forest for a weekend-long concert.

THE BUZZ: David Arquette's directorial debut is recommended if you like: drug use, male/female nudity, obsessed boyfriends, anti-hippie sheriffs, Reagan-era political humor, low-budget gore, attack dogs, and hot celeb cameos. As the film is gaining momentum, Arquette has announced his idea for a sequel to IGN.com: "We're toying with the title The Tripper 2: The Burning Bush. It would be like a Burning Man [Festival] kind of feel, but different setting, same vibe. A little more intense, maybe some zombies. There is another president sort of thing, but it's not Reagan in the second one. There might be some Reagan appearances though."

Stephanie Daley

Stephanie Daley [NYC]

Director: Hilary Brougher
Stars: Tilda Swinton, Amber Tamblyn, Timothy Hutton (Full Cast)
Studio: Regent Releasing

The Plot: Forensic psychologist Lydie Crane (Swinton) is assigned to the case of 16-year-old Stephanie Daley (Tamblyn), who has been accused of concealing her pregnancy and murdering her newborn on arrival.

THE BUZZ: One of the nuances in this well-received drama from writer-director Hilary Brougher (last we heard from her, she was dealing with The Sticky Fingers of Time) is that Swinton's character is pregnant herself. But lest you think this drama escaped from Lifetime Television, some of the toughest indies critics are giving the film high marks for the pairing of its two leads. Put another way: even Tim Hutton is getting high marks.

Disturbia

Disturbia

Director: D.J. Caruso
Stars: Shia LaBeouf, David Morse, Carrie-Anne Moss (Full Cast)
Studio: DreamWorks SKG

The Plot: A teen (LaBeouf) living under house arrest becomes convinced his neighbor (Morse) is a serial killer.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: A teened-down version of Hitchcock's Rear Window, written by the guy behind Red-Eye? Get psyched! With a fun cast (it'll be good to see the LaBouef go bad boy as a violent teen) and crafty premise, the only question mark here is director D.J. Caruso, who fares better at TV (The Shield) than features (Two for the Money).

Blades of Glory

Blades of Glory

Director: Josh Gordon Will Speck
Stars: Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Amy Poehler (Full Cast)
Studio: Paramount Pictures

The Plot: In 2002, two rival Olympic ice skaters (Ferrell and Heder) were stripped of their gold medals and permanently banned from men's single competition. Fast forward to the present day, where the duo has found a loophole that will allow them to qualify as a pairs team.

User Rating: *******___

THE BUZZ: We're imagining this film was pitched by someone asking, "Will Ferrell, Napoleon Dynamite, spandex." And sometimes the blockbuster formula feels so natural you just give in and champion a film from the moment it was greenlit. We're a bit surprised that commercial director duo Josh Gordon and Will Speck got the call here (we were guessing Rawson Marshall Thurber), but with this premise and cast, which includes real-life husband and wife team Poehler and Arnett playing pairs skating champs, it all adds up to DreamWorks' acutal-real comedy hit since Meet the Fockers.

Meet the Robinsons

Meet the Robinsons

Director: Stephen J. Anderson
Stars: Daniel Hansen, Wesley Singerman (Full Cast)
Studio: Buena Vista Pictures

The Plot: A boy genius named Lewis (Fry) has his latest invention, a "memory scanner," stolen by the nefarious Bowler Hat Guy. Just when he's given up hope he'll ever retrieve his creation, he meets Wilbur Robinson (Fox), a curious young fellow from the future, who invites him to travel forward in time to meet his eccentric extended family (who really need Lewis's help), hunt down the thief, and perhaps learn a secret or two about his own past.

THE BUZZ: Disney's in-house animation studio was stoked when Chicken Little proved they could succeed without Pixar. So for their next number, they will turn William Joyce's best-seller into the best-looking animation that Hollywood allows.

Perfect Stranger

Perfect Stranger

Director: James Foley
Stars: Halle Berry, Bruce Willis, Giovanni Ribisi (Full Cast)
Studio: Sony Pictures Entertainment

The Plot: A journalist (Berry) goes undercover to ferret out businessman Harrison Hill (Willis) as her best friend's killer. Posing as one of his temps, she enters into a game of online cat-and-mouse.

User Rating: *****_____

THE BUZZ: It's getting harder and harder to believe that James Foley directed Glengarry Glen Ross. And that Ms. Berry won an Oscar. Watching her and Bruce Willis IM one another is, from our point of view, the dullest of prospects. One wrong move and this could be edited for broadcast on Lifetime.

Are We Done Yet?

Are We Done Yet?

Director: Steve Carr
Stars: Ice Cube, Nia Long, John C. McGinley (Full Cast)
Studio: Revolution Studios

The Plot: Nick Persons (Ice Cube), his new wife (Nia Long), and her two kids (Allen and Bolden) leave the city behind for a fixer-upper in the 'burbs -- an investment which quickly turns from a dream into a nightmare for Nick, as the contractor (McGinley) working on the house bonds with everyone in the family ... except Nick.

User Rating: **________

THE BUZZ: What started as a remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House turned into the sequel to Are We There Yet? once Revolution Studios indicated it would halt development on new projects. Thomas Haden Church was attached for like a second to play the contractor, but really the casting of "Scrubs" McGinley is the only sign of genius as far as this project is concerned. Ice Cube's failed gangsta comeback on film (2005's xXx 2) and cd (2006's Laugh Now, Cry Later) means nothing but family values for the forseeable future. Though we keep hearing rumors of one final Friday ....

Pathfinder

Pathfinder

Director: Marcus Nispel
Stars: Karl Urban, Clancy Brown (Full Cast)
Studio: Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation

The Plot: A Viking boy is left behind after his clan battles a Native American tribe. Raised within the tribe, he ultimately becomes their savoir in a fight against the Norsemen.

User Rating: *****_____

THE BUZZ: Karl Urban (most recently seen in Doom but really you love him as Eomer from The Two Towers and Return of the King) is the Native American people's champ in this remake of the Oscar-nominated Norweigian film. We're not sure the pairing of a C-list actor (we really don't mean that as a dig) and the director of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake radiates the expression "summer tentpole," and neither does 20th Century Fox, since the studio first moved the film from summer to fall, then to the winter, and finally to one of the busiest spring weekends. We're wondering if it has something to do with the frosty reaction that greeted the film at Comic-Con. You could feel a collective eyebrow raise as the phrases "little dialogue" and "in Icelandic" were tossed about; we began to wonder if we were being read to from Bjrk's diary.

The Plot: A trio of middle-aged wannabe bikers (Allen, Lawrence, Travolta) look for adventure out on the open road, where they soon encounter a chapter of the Hell's Angels.

The Reaping

The Reaping

Director: Stephen Hopkins
Stars: Hilary Swank, David Morrissey, AnnaSophia Robb (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: Katherine Morrissey (Swank), a professor known for debunking miracles, heads to a small town in Texas to investigate occurrences that appear to be the 10 Biblical plagues.

User Rating: ******____

THE BUZZ: So this is like an episode of "MythBusters" starring Hilary (one "L," two Oscars) Swank ... Speaking of the Academy favorite, she was a buh-lank slate at Comic-Con 2006, where the early campaign for the film's 2006 release began. That presentation was a bomb, and the project was uncermoniously booted to TBD 2007. Hopefully Warner Bros. will get a better trailer and a workhorse publicist or two behind this thriller -- people who can put a spin on what appears to be Skeet Ulrich's former show, "Miracles", with more expensive trappings. And if that doesn't work, maybe the studio should give Terabithia's AnnaSophia Robb equal billing.

300

300

Director: Zack Snyder
Stars: Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, David Wenham (Full Cast)
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

The Plot: In 480 B.C., Spartan king Leonidas (Butler) leads 300 of his warriors into battle with the Persian army, who are bent on conquering Greece.

User Rating: ********__

THE BUZZ: Zack Snyder's decadent, hyper-violent and -stylized take on Frank Miller's graphic novel is shaping up to be some sort of new Fanboy Masterpiece, as the man who dared to update Dawn of the Dead is turning the battle of Thermopylae into one of the most anticipated movies of the year. The buzz really started after last year's Comic Con, where Snyder's fan-friendly approach to filmmaking paid off with a grand reception. Believe it or not, the best place to go for the complete scoop is the film's official site, which is overflowing with video journals, concept art renders, and other behind-the-scenes action. If 300 finds its audience, will Snyder get the green light for the Watchmen?

Grindhouse

Grindhouse

Director: Robert Rodriguez Eli Roth
Stars: Kurt Russell, Rose McGowan, Danny Trejo (Full Cast)
Studio: Weinstein Company, The

The Plot: Back-to-back flicks from Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. In Tarantino's Death Proof, three Austin ladies out for a night on the town are trailed by Stuntman Mike (Russell), a scarred outsider with one killer car; in Rodriguez's Planet Terror, a dancer (McGowan) and her ex-boyfriend (Rodrguez) are a town's only real hope against an outbreak that turns everyday people into flesh-hungry aggressors.

User Rating: *********_

THE BUZZ: For a minute there, it appeared the mania caused by the announcement of this event nearly caused the idea to collapse on itself. How could the meticulous QT and the frenzied RR complete a project under such a finely tuned microscope? The answer: They took their time, pushing the release date out by over half a year, all the while stoking our fever for any shred of rumor or fact. The dam first gave way at Comic-Con '06, where posters showcasing McGowan with a machine gun leg and Shelton sporting Christina Ricci eyes and a gold-plated syringe, oozed the most intoxicating mix of geek-cool. Then the high-octane trailer hit the Net, luring in a whole new generation of fans not even old enough to remember what a grindhouse film is and (almost) allowing us to forget Tarantino's little stints on American Idol and CSI.
