THORATEC ANNOUNCES ESTABLISHMENT OF MEMORIAL FUND FOR
THOMAS E. BURNETT, JR.; COMPANY EXECUTIVE WAS VICTIM IN
CRASH OF UNITED AIRLINES FLIGHT 93

(PLEASANTON, CA), September 14, 2001—Thoratec Corporation today announced the creation of the Thomas E. Burnett, Jr. Family Memorial Fund in honor of its senior vice president and chief operating officer who was a victim of Tuesday’s crash of United Airlines Flight 93 outside of Pittsburgh. Burnett, 38, is survived by his wife Deena and three young daughters.

"This memorial fund is a way for Tom’s friends and colleagues to honor his life. In addition, the company has received literally hundreds of calls from around the world asking how they might help Tom’s family since hearing of his heroics in helping to divert United Airlines Flight #93 from its intended target," said D. Keith Grossman, president and chief executive officer of Thoratec. “Thoratec is proud to establish this fund with the first contribution, which was made today."
