From September 2004 the Lay Worker for Sark is Mr. Roger Browning. Read the latest news (July 2007) from Sark We at Sark Methodist Church are greatly blessed by the many visitors who come to this very special place. You can be certain of a friendly and warm Christian welcome when you visit. The present Sark Methodist Church was opened on 25 April 1925. One of the foundation stones was laid by St. Martin's Church, Jersey "a la memoire de Jean de Quetteville, fondateur de l'oeuvre de Sercq et natif de St. Martin's, Jersey". Jean de Quetteville was born there in 1761, went to school in Winchester and became a Methodist in 1783. He was later ordained by Thomas Coke whose missionary work included the Channel Islands. John Wesley visited Guernsey in 1787 at the age of 81. After some early misgivings, he sent the young de Quetteville to preach in Alderney and Sark. De Quetteville is rightly referred to as the founder of the work in Sark where a chapel was opened in 1797 (A Dictionary of Methodism in Britain and Ireland, Epworth, 2000, p.59). De Quetteville often faced great hostility to his missionary work. In 1795 he published in Guernsey a Nouveau recueil de Cantiques spirituels, and a considerably enlarged edition in 1806. The collection of hymns in French for use in Methodist churches in the Channel Islands available in our chapel, still contains a number of his hymns (the brief preface is a valuable bibliographical article on the sources of the material included). A hymn in French is sung at most of our services. A Sunday School in Sark was endowed in 1838. We now have an after-school club on Mondays. The present schoolroom seems contemporary with the chapel. It has recently been extensively refurbished . The manse on the same site is recent. It was dedicated on 20 April 1992 by the Reverend Ronald Hoar, President of Conference in that year. Our tiny, regular congregation is greatly encouraged and blessed by the company of summer visitors. A regular service is held each Sunday at 10.30am. A number of special services are shared with our Anglican friends at St. Peter's. Visitors will also be welcome at Prayer Circle at 10.30am on Tuesday. Further details are available from our Senior Steward and Treasurer Mrs. Nellie Le Feuvre (Tel. 01481 832321), our Communion and Property Steward Mrs. Mary Teer (Tel. 01481 832468) or Deacon Cedric May at The Manse, Rue de Sermon, Sark, Channel Islands GY9 0SF (Tel. 01481 832115). A very successful District Ministerial retreat took place in April 2004 when the Rev. Dr. Kathleen Richardson led the staff of the islands in their thoughts about the Church and its relationship to the state. This was done from "a very delightful personal angle" Deacon Cedric reports and was very much appreciated by those able to make this short, pre-Synod break. Last updated; 22nd May 2004 |
