Wordpress Desktop Blogging: 5 Tools Reviewed
I was about to write a blog post when it hit me. It was like a blinding realization... a moment of pure truth. I hate the Wordpress post editor. In fact, I'm not too fond of the entire admin area, but I love wordpress as a whole package. So, why haven't I researched desktop Wordpress clients? And thus, the idea for this post was born.
To my amazement, I found that there were quite a few blog administrator applications for the desktop. For my particular application, though it had to meet a few requirements.
- It has to administer Wordpress
- It has to run on windows
I narrowed my pool down to 5 lucky contestants. In order of review, I give you: Desktop WordPress Blogging!
Zoundry
Website: Zoundry.com
Price: Free
Summary: This software is excellent! This is what I had in mind when I set out to find desktop blogging software for wordpress. The usability is excellent. Initially, I expected some type of configuration wizard or walk-through. Instead, what I received was a panel that had the steps with links on how to set up my blog for Zoundry lovin'. I believe it worked better than a walk-through could have, since it taught me the way to set up another blog if I needed it. This app got out of my way and let me do what I set out to do. Zoundry was definitely built by a programmer with excellent usability experience.
Advantages:
- Automatic blog-type discovery (just provide the URL!)
- Easy to set up accounts
- Imports your blog posts
- Getting started tab guides you through blog set up
- HTML validator built into the code view (big plus)
- WYSIWYG features still usable in code view
- Includes a publish menu to finalize your decisions, tags, trackbacks, etc.
Disadvantages:
- Scroll wheel on my mouse crashed the entire app on the publish menu. Luckily, Zoundry has an autosave feature which recovered the post I had started. Nice.
- Interface is a little cluttery
Anconia RocketPost
Website: Anconia.com/rocketpost
Price: Home - $37, pro - $99 (Free trial available)
Summary: Despite being an eye pleaser, the client is somewhat difficult to use. It didn't come off very natural or intuitive to me, and it made me work to discover some features. Overall not bad, but against this group of amazing applications, it's going to have to work a bit harder for the kind of money it's after. Not bad, but not amazing.
Advantages:
- Beautiful interface
- Walk-through on the first install gets you up and running fast, including offering to set up a blog
Disadvantages:
- Import of existing posts failed
- Interface is difficult to use, despite being pretty
- The option to post disappears in code view (why?)
W.Bloggar
Website: WBloggar.com
Price: Free
Summary: W.Bloggar is great... I almost want to stop testing. This tool is extremely good at what it does. It does everything I was looking for, and has no extra useless features. Pinging Technorati (and other ping services) is a nice plus, something Zoundry also did. This one edges out Zoundry with it's clean and intuitive interface.
Advantages:
- The software seems extremely well put together
- Walk-through on intro
- Clean interface
Disadvantages:
- No auto discovery of service type
BlogJet
Website: CodingRobots.com/BlogJet
Price: $39.95 (Free trial available)
Summary: Works so well it brings a tear to my eye. This is what software should be. The usability is amazing, the interface is attractive and very intuitive. Most importantly, the software works GREAT. I'm buying this. BlogJet is a masterpiece.
Advantages:
- Easiest install of the bunch
- New user walk-through (the best walk-through of the bunch, as well)
- Offers to help sign up for a blog
- Beautiful interface
- Very intuitive
- Great usability... it feels natural. I didn't have to hunt for anything.
Disadvantages:
- No auto discovery. I thought there would be at first when it asked for just my site address, but that turned out not to be the case
Ecto
Website: Infinite-Sushi.com/Software/Ecto/
Cost: $17.95 (Free trial available)
Summary: This program failed to connect to my blog. I'm not sure if I misconfigured, but the only thing it's telling me is that my site returned invalid XML. This isn't very helpful in debugging the issue (Assuming it's configuration based). None of the other apps had a problem. Unfortunately, I can't give this software a full review because I was unable to get the product to work.
Advantages:
- Wizard walk-through on first start
Disadvantages:
- Setup is more technical than the others I've tested -- I need to know a lot about the technical side of my blog. API address, API type, etc.
In summary, my top choice was BlogJet. I love this software. I wish all the applications I've purchased were of this calibre. This software category was surprisingly well done. I expected a lot of poorly made applicatons, but found just the opposite. This is a pretty fiercely competitive category. Kudos to all involved.
- Top Choice: BlogJet
- Runner Up: W.Bloggar
- Third: Zoundry
- Fourth: Anconia RocketPost
- Inconclusive: Ecto
*Note: I didn't feel right giving Ecto "last place", as I never got the chance to fully test it. For some, that could mean the software is broken. It could be my mistake, though, hence the inconclusive rating.

Hey James, Have you looked at the one in the Microsoft live suite. Its pretty good for an MS product and its free.
Try Windows Live Writer. When I was using Windows, I preferred that client to ecto. On Mac, I'm loving MarsEdit (again over ecto).
One more great tip that will help out your blog is adding the Mochila badge. The badge automatically rotates the top videos, pictures and articles which will increase your search results. It’s free to register. I promise this will help out your blog.

I've tried a lot of blog editors - Microsoft Live Writer, Qumana, BlogJet, BlogDesk - but have stuck with Ecto for a long time. I'm not sure why you had problems during set-up but I found no issues when trying to configure new blogs - and I've got a few. :) Thanks for the round-up as I'm always on the look out for new WP tools.
Great group of WP tools. Thanks for this review!
no wonder you suk
wordpress and os x pwn your face but linux pwns os x.
get with the program.
put down your windows shit os
Dont be an infant. When you get an education and a job, you'll find that you'll be more interested in what your software can do for you.
When you become more informed, you're illogical love for OSX (FreeBSD) and GNU/Linux will melt away.
Hey now: I am a professional and I use OSX more than I use my windows machine. I find it easier to use and more efficient that Windows in most regards (Medical imaging, specifically).
When YOU become more informed, you'll realize that *nix, OSX and do$e all have their own strengths and weaknesses, and their own uses
yes they are wonderful tools but all of them :( $$

windows sucks ass.
Adobe Contribute also provides great desktop blog publishing functionality out of the box for Wordpress. Works amazingly well, and is simple to use. I wrote up a short synopsis here: http://eureka.emmgee.com/index.php/2007/08/23/testing-contribute-cs3/
You missed the best one I've found yet for WP. It's call BlogDesk and it has one issue on install with the dhtmlex.dll file, but it's easily fixed.
It's free, it works amazingly well, and... yeah. Just works well. Great image tools, all sorts of good stuff.
ALSO IT'S FREE! FOREVER! :D

Thanks for the informative post, but trials does not mean free.
I have to admit I've tried out most of the big name clients like WBlogger, Ecto, etc. but the one that has impressed me the most is Windows Live Writer. If you're used to Word or any of their other main programs its a very natural interface to use. It auto detects your blog APIs if its possible and is real easy to use. It even auto-updates tags, categories, etc.
Is it just me or does BlogJet look amazingly like the new Windows Live Writer. I suspect Microsoft bought BlogJet, as it's just too close to being the same interface.
blogjet dont display previous posts w/ image thumbs properly
wblogger wont run with the blog url, passw, some "http error"
zoundry is fine, interface is 2/3 ok, 1/3 clunky, amd runs outside install = portable.
If you use Firefox I can absolutely recommend ScribeFire, formerly known as Perfomancing. Works great, easy to setup and nicely integrated into the browser.
I was curious if any of the tools supported inserting images. The main thing i have always disliked about WP editor is that it doesn't have a good photo inserting function.
I would prefer to have an easier photo insert akin to the blogspot photo insert.
Any tips for this?
BILZ, Windows Live Writer does an excellent job of inserting photos. You can even tell it how/where to upload your .jpg file.
I, too, wanted a blogging editor for my blog collection. One difference is that I use Mac OSX exclusively. The other is that I finally gave up.
I tried MarsEdit, Ecto,ScribeFire and something else happily forgotten. ScribeFire, freeware for Firefox, came the closest to actually working with the ability - sort of - to upload images. In the end none worked well enough not to require following up their upload with some work back in the WP or Blogger dashboards. I decided it was easier to start with WP or Blogger and skip the 3d party editor even if they were prettier. It did not seem worthwhile to waste even more time searching, configuring and, finally, failing with any more. By the way, Ecto was the most useless so you are not alone.
I didn't know people were still blogging using the windows platform...;)
It's not especially for blogs but I use evernote and just copy and paste the note from evernote into the Wordpress editor. It works fine, no need to make any futher edits. www.evernote.com
I think Ecto has some cool features not available on MarsEdit. For some reason it looks really cluttered. I don't need to see so many tools at one time.
Great post. I never knew there were desktop apps for wordpress. I know there are a few for the Windows Mobile 5/6 and PocketPC, my favorite being Pocket SharpMT.
But for the desktop I prefer Word 2007. It is a step above live writer in that you get a richer editing environment and more control over what your post will look like.
Only thing, as is the norm with any editor, yo must remember the width of your posting space when it comes to pictures (if they aren't automatically resized by your blog.
Check it out, Microsoft offers a trial
I just use the Flock web browser. It's free and you can post all you want with it.
www.flock.com
If I remember correctly, Windows Live writer dumps a bunch of extra, unnecessary code into your posts - similar to Office 2007 (don't ever use that for blogging!)
What I liked about it is that I could copy and paste a screenshot, crop it and then it gets uploaded directly through the post.
I'm using performancing at the moment (FF plugin) but it actually sucks a bit.
How can you stay on an OS with such ugly graphics :/
I use wordpress on myblog and such tools would be useful if they supported linux also....but anyway it's my choice and I have to pay the price for now..good post
You left out blogdesk, which IMHO totally rocks and has excellent image editing features built in
Rather than whine about how bad you think Windows is, why don't you produce a list of FREE desktop blog editors for OSX that rivals what's available for Windows? Can you do it? Stop constantly whining because you're insecure over your choice of buying a Mac, and step up. That, or shut up.
Hello, very nice site, keep up good job!
Admin good, very good.
yeah, i think you missed out blogdesk. i never looked back since using it.
How can you stay on an operating system with such ugly graphics
