1982 General Motors permanently closes its manufacturing plant in Fremont, California.

Toyota Motor Corporation and General Motors Corporation begin discussions about forming a joint venture in the U.S.
1983 February
Toyota and GM sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding the joint venture.

September
United Auto Workers and joint venture sign a Letter of Intent.
1984 February
New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) becomes an independent California corporation located in Fremont.

March
Applications sent to some 5,000 former GM-Fremont employees.

April
Federal Trade Commission approves joint venture.

December
First Chevrolet Nova is produced.
1985 June
Chevrolet Nova goes on sale through Chevrolet dealers.
First agreement between United Auto Workers (UAW), Local 2244 and NUMMI is signed, effective July 1.

November
First shift reaches full production.

December
Full second-shift operations begin.
1986 April
Full production, both shifts, reaches 940 vehicles per day.

First Toyota Corolla FX16 is produced.
1987 February
First Toyota Corolla FX is produced.

First Chevrolet Nova Twin Cam is produced.

First Toyota 4x2 compact pickup truck is built.
1992 February
First 4x4 Toyota compact pickup truck is built. It earned an award for Best Compact Pickup in Initial Quality from J.D. Power and Associates.

NUMMI announces plans to produce Toyota Xtracab compact pickup truck.
1993 March
Production of Xtracab begins.

NUMMI earns award for Best Compact Pickup in Initial Quality from J.D. Power and Associates.

NUMMI breaks ground for a plastics manufacturing facility.
GM, Toyota, and NUMMI sign agreement to petition the FTC to vacate its original order.

NUMMI celebrates 10th anniversary.
