Recommended Software Requirements for Use of the CAIN Web Site

Anyone viewing the HTML pages at the CAIN web site is advised to use a recent version of one of the more common browsers:

In addition to the HTML pages there are many documents available at the CAIN site that have been stored in PDF format. Anyone wishing to view this type of document will require a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

The Reader can also be obtained from a mirror site at Imperial College, London.

The HTML pages that form CAIN Web Service have been designed so that the uppermost levels of the service contain mainly text. Images, which take more time to download, are kept to a minimum at the upper levels, but are more likely to occur at lower levels of the Service. Most of the images are in the form of 'GIF' (.gif) or 'JPEG' (.jpg) files.

There are some documents which are available for downloading in 'Rich Text Format' (.rtf). The user may need to adjust their browser program (Options/General_Preferences/Helpers or equivalent) to obtain copies of this type of file.

Given the size of some of the files that are presented at the CAIN site, the user may also need to adjust the amount of memory allocated to the cache (Options/Network_Preferences/Memory_Cache or equivalent) to avoid problems viewing the material.

It is envisaged that the CAIN Web Service will provide some audio and video in the near future. When this becomes the case, appropiate hardware and software requirements will be included here.
