Oblivion 360 Downloads Begin
For $3, you can outfit your horse with sparkly armor.
By Patrick Klepek, 04/03/2006

If you're interested in outfitting your horse with a spiffy armor pack, it'll set you back 200 Microsoft Points (roughly $2.50). PC owners aren't out of luck, though, as Bethseda confirmed to 1UP the same content will be available on their website later today or tomorrow morning for exactly 51 cents cheaper at $1.99.
The company didn't provide an explanation for the price discrepancy, but they did confirm players shouldn't expect swords, maces and other items to be a part of Bethesda's premium content plans. "We want to add new stuff, not different versions of things already in the game," says VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines.
$2.50 (or slightly less, depending on your hardware preference) isn't too bad for a completely new item, and Bethesda says the price won't fluctuate very much for future items. "We priced it [the armor] at a level we think is reasonable. I would imagine all of our content would be around the same range," he said.

Yeah I know that they are really trying to push downloadable content on us...and it sounds cool. So Oblivion for the 360 is the first one out the gate with some thing pretty decent (note I said decent not amazing). But most people are already complaining about the price, but like all things in this world you have a choice if you want to buy it or not. So stop complaining if you don't need it then don't get it. The choice is yours.

It wasn't so much the price...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by GeeQnastie
I would have paid the 200 points, I have enough on my account sitting around doing nothing. However, what really bugged me, is it was just bought, and unlocked. Like the Kameo Winter Wonderland pack, you shovel out the money, and it's just there. I don't wanna just pay for something that all it does is edit a look a little bit (unless of course that editing is the change in colors to certain armors) I want like a whole quest that opens up armor options. Or to actually havta retrieve the armor off of enemy NPC's horses. Some kind of challenge. Plus, now that I've mentioned Kameo, the day I bought the WWP, was the day BEFORE it was made free... what a rip off

I don't have microsoft bonus point dealies! How the hell am I suppose to get this? The shouldn't make people pay for this crap! Maybe if there was more content...but it only has steel armor and elven armor. So, two items for 1.25 each. What a freaking rip off.

Interesting take...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Firf
I would think they would want to offer the downloads for free to gain: 1) customer loyalty, 2) add replay value to the games; 3) add new excitement to a current game and keep the excitement going well after the game has been released; and 4) give folks unprecidented variety... It is really not a complaint because people can choose to or not to download them for a cost, however if paying were to give you an advantage over other players, then we have a problem (e.g. in the Live! environment). Adults would have a significant advantage over kids (well, I guess that evens the playing field because they usually kick our adult butts ;)) and, in general, those will $ would have an advantage over those that don't... I suppose some could say that is built into our culture, but it doesn't mean that, particularly in the game world, would be appropriate. So, I have to agree, that although we can choose whether or not to engage in cost based additions that are not really an expansion (which would be worth money), it is the idea that may be a problem, along with the potential for it being a trend that we would all likey 'not like'. P.S. Is there any real value other than the look (and maybe trying to keep your 1000-2500 gold value in your horse)?

mo money to trick out my pony?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by ratmonkey
i dont think so. $3 is pretty expensive just to get the horses some spiffy outfit to match yourself. if sales for horse armor dont go well, perhaps theyll release it in a "game of the year" edtion of Oblivion. i can picture that.

$2.50 is a joke
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Drengy
Waaay too much for something like this. Especially when it's a single player game. I can almost understand paying if this were an MMORPG, where you could show-off your phat ride, but why bother if no one is going to see it but you? And if you play in first-person, even you will rarely see it. A single item like horse armor should be no more than 50 points, not 200!

For HORSE ARMOR?!

Why should we have to pay $2.50 for Horse Armor? If you pay $5.00 you could get Geometry Wars which is a way better value.

I couldn't DISAGREE with you more. 2$ for ONE item is retarded. I loved the idea of MICROtransactions, not SMALL transactions. there is a difference. if you end up paying 20 to 30$ for a bunch of items or vehicles or whatever content that should have been included in the first place, then this whole marketplace is a total ripoff. that's like going to the restaurant, paying 60$ for your meal, but having to pay extra to get a glass of water. I'm all for paying 5 to 10 bucks for a map pack in a FPS or extra courses in a racing game, because that type of content adds longevity to a game but a frigging ITEM? and it's not about the money. 2$ is nothing when you've dropped a grand on a new console, accessories a few games. it's the principle that's just wrong. what's to stop them from shipping barebones games further down the line and making us pay for all the extras. first it's the armor, then it'll be the horse! "you wanna ride a horse, fine, but it'll cost ya". I love the marketplace and I have no problem spending 800 credits on a XBLA game because I think that's an awesome deal, but 200 credits for a single item is unacceptable. it is we as customers who can put a stop to this before it gets out of control. I strongly urge every xbox 360 customer to boycott such shameless tactics. we already paid 400 bucks for your console and 60 bucks for your game. what more do you want from us, a FACKING KIDNEY??

That's all I ever see in these threads. Complain complain complain. If you don't like what something is or how something is going then don't take part in it. Complaining on this site isn't going to achieve anything. Call Microsoft and voice your opinion. They sure as hell aren't going to come onto here and pay attention to your rants about how everything should be free.

paying too much???
Posted: userComment.createdDate by deanis73
To those who say you paid too much for this game, are you serious? How long have you actually played this game? I hit 60 hours yesterday, and I STILL haven't quite beaten all the storylines (not to mention all the side quests). Sure, it may be 10 bucks more than a game for the PS2 or Xbox, but I like to think of games in terms of price per hour of entertainment (and price per quality, but that's another issue), and this one is at less than $1 an hour right now. Quit whining, enjoy the game, and you have only yourselves to blame for paying an extra ten bucks for the "making of" DVD and some silly fantasy coin.

*yawn* It's horse armor, people..
Posted: userComment.createdDate by vttym
If they charged 2.50 to fix loading hiccups, mid-distance draw-in or glitches, I'd be up in arms... But it's horse armor.. If you're relying on your horse to assist you in kills throughout the world, perhaps you want to rethink your strategy.. I have no problem with a company offering expanded features for a small cost. I don't have to buy this (And won't), but if there is a release down the road that piques my interest, I'll jump on it. I mean seriously, do you think 60 bucks covers the 3+ years of development this game was in? Everyone get off your high horse and realize this is a business that needs to make money in order to survive. If you want to see more games like this (and according to everyone I've talked to, we do), then put your money where your mouth is. This isn't a not-for-profit industry.

Probably a bit too much.....
Posted: userComment.createdDate by [email protected]
....for one small item in the game. I'll probably eventually buy it but I think $2.50 is way too much. If one piece of armor is $2.50 how much will new quests/episodic content cost!?!?! I'd gladly pay a buck for the armor. Kinda like paying a buck a song through some online services. Still alittle steep but who can't afford one freaking dollar. They'd still be making serious cash. You figure if it took the 3D artist 10 hours at $75 an hour to create it then all the other BS to get it up on the marketplace your probably looking at a labor cost of $900 at the most! Probably less then that since they're likely just reskinning an existing 3d object with new bitmaps and maybe some minor geometry tweaks. Bottom line they'd have to sell way less then 1000 units to recoup the investment at $1 a pop. I think $2.50 is just greedy. For $20 bucks you got a DVD full of several maps for Halo 2....theres ALOT more work there for your $20 bucks then for a piece of armor at $2.50..... I have no problem with them holding back certain items for release later as long as the game you bought is fully fleshed out. I don't think anyone can make an arguement that your not getting your $60-$70 worth with Oblivion. I'm sure they have a slew of things either done or in-progress for release on the marketplace. I'm good with that. Just be a bit more reasonable with the pricing structure.

Testing Testing 1,2....3
Posted: userComment.createdDate by tygertat
The way I see it is that we as a gaming community are being tested to see how far we will let things go. Its that simple. If we don't buy into it then maybe that in itself will say something. I for example am a bit reluctant to pay the $60 price tag on my next-gen games and just flat out refuse to pay $70 for a "special edition". So adding on anything to the price is just out of the question for me, especially for some novelty edition to my game. Now if the games were cheaper......then maybe I'd consider it. Hey Microsoft- not a bad idea is it?

This horse armor irks me, now 3 dollars isnt a heck of a lot of money but it poses the question. Who will regulate what should be free or not? Will game developers start holding back content originally planned to be included in the game in lieu of making money through market place download? I see this as a potentially hazardous threat, in the end gamers could be ripped off big time. Yet so far im seeing the market place as pretty awesome. I've been trying out the BFMC 2 demo. Multiplayer for free, an awesome download and i hope there's more to follow. Someone needs to keep the developers honest though, i think for 60 dollars for oblivion, the horse armor was something they could've thrown in for free as a gesture of good will. But i guess i can't complain, they arent forcing me to download in order to play the game, and otherwise oblivion is such a great game there isn't any room for complaints. Microsoft i love the 360, but please don't let developers screw us over with holding back content!

Just like Super Sizing, extended warranties, and items in the check out lanes, companies will try and squeeze every drop out of us. But... "that's business!" Unfortunately, I think we can look forward to a lot more of this in the future of home consoles. When I first heard about the 360's "Marketplace" function, I immediately thought, "Great, now they're gonna try and nickle and dime me to death for every little thing." Sure enough!! I don't even have my 360 yet (Sitting at my gf's house until my birthday in MAY!) but already I'm worried about my console becoming a door to door salesman that never leaves. And what if we choose not to play along? Do you think they'll make the content free? I think they'll make it more necesary. Make us feel like we aren't getting "the full experience" or something.
-
-
ok i take it back id think about paying like 50 cents for it
Posted: userComment.createdDate by objectivegameguy
2.50 is a joke for something as small as that. Ive found a couple unlimited money glitches in the game anyway, so if my horse dies, i dont really sweat buying a new one. But i would never spend more than a dollar or 2 on additional content, and it better be something big, like a car in a racing game, or a new map in a FPS. I not sure any of this is a good idea though. If people start buying it are they gonna start pulling content from the game to sell it to us later? Probably.

Man, I can't agree with you more. I also bought the 75-dollar Collectors Edition, and boy, was that worthless. You get some cheap little book that probably cost around a dollar to make, and a coin. Sure, I prefer the collector??s edition, but I don't agree with charging 2 or 3 dollars for additional items. In fact, the only things I think are worth spending money on are the actual games. I've been disappointed in the fact that you have to spend money on things like Themes, and in game picture packs. Even though I love the Xbox Live Marketplace, I don't think they should be charging for something that basically advertises their games to whomever is playing games at your house. You're already doing them a favor and buying the game, so being fleeced for something as trivial as armor is just wrong. I will never spend money on themes, or single pieces of armor. And two dollars for one item, considering the fact that they bragged on that little DVD that they bundled with the collectors edition that the game contained what? hundreds or thousands of items. You do the math, two dollars per item is an ass reaming of unfathomable proportions. Anyone that buys them is an ass also, because as mentioned previously online, every single time someone buys a premium pack, they are telling the game companies that charging more for something is, "OK". Anyone with common sense would swear off buying this type content, and send a clear message, "Don't rip off your fans!??

Furthermore, for every Bill O'Reilly out there in training; exactly how does it affect you if someone openly complains? Ironic how someone should voice their displeasure by complete silence and yet you're all incapable of doing the same. This could've easily been a bonus on an already lacking Limited Edition that we all paid $70 for (the first game in nearly 12 years I've paid that much for, too). We love you Bethesda, but quite frankly, very few of us love you that much. As most have stated, it's not the price but the principle of the matter when we're paying this much for games in the first place.

RE:$70 wasn't enough?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Sci_Fi_Neurofunk
Seriously... Its bad enough when games go to $60 and then when you buy the special edition you're screwed into paying $3 here another $3 there for additional content that i'm sure isn't worth paying 10 cents for. This is fucking ridiculous and is seriously pissing me off. They should be happy they still have fans but with this $/point system they're alienating they're most fervent followers. Just be grateful with you're $60/$70 Bethesda and give me free content.

Whining is crucial
Posted: userComment.createdDate by eternallyNot
I know when things like this happen, there are always posts about "if you don't like it, don't buy it - that simple." Actually, it isn't. If everyone is silent and there aren't any sales. While we make think it is obvious why something doesn't sell, it honestly isn't that obvious to corporations. Our company spends tons of money trying to understand what our customers like and don't like. When something isn't going over well, they spend more cash for researching the cause. And I am here to tell you that they never think of cost as the first barrier to sales. Because they set that price based on the belief that the service/product is worth it. Usually the first belief is that customers aren't buying because they aren't "aware" and follow with mass advertising. Silent boycotts don't do anything... whining on forums will, because they do pay people to watch them.

If the trend continues and you buy 25-30 items at $2.50 each you'd be paying as much if not more than you paid for the game. So $60 for 25 items or $60 for the hundreds that are already in the game. And the way it seems none of the new content is going to really enhance gameplay or load times. Go buy a slurpee and a candy bar with your $2.50, at least you'll be satisfied.

how much is enough?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by $kyscraper_Antfarm
So, they release the game a little over a week ago and already have an overpriced novelty item up for sale! Like everyone is saying: wasn't $70 enough. I also concur that they deliberately left this out of the game, along with some other stuff to put it up for sale later on and make even more. Incomplete games here we come. The cost of gaming nowadays is ridiculous even when you do have the money. You need HDTV, a broadband connection, a $400 console and pay $60/game...can you say second job. How about actually earning the item through a hardass sidequest or something. Getting it would mean alot more then.

The armor isn't the main point of the article; it's just showing the first steps into the new market. With downloadable content developers gain additional revenue on their products, which in turn keeps costs down, so you don't have to pay $80 for a game. It's the act that's important, not the product. I'm excited about this because I expect bigger and better things to come from it (also because I needs me some bling for my horse).

You can complain and whine all you want but it all comes down to this. If you don't like this idea then don't buy this its that simple. Me personally I think this is a complete rip off in my opinion there for I am not buying it. I am not complaining or anything but paying 2.50 for some armor for my horse in a game seems kinda dumb so I am not buying it. So lets all calm down and lets wait for some new quest or something to pop up worth spending money on. Honestly it seems kinda hard for me to spend more money on a game I already bought unless its a MMO. Maybe if you don't purchase it the prices will lower or even better become free.

From a business standpoint it's a very savvy decision, I can completely understand WHY they want to do it. I just don't think it's right. The $10 hike in the retail price should be enough to justify all the new fancy graphics and content. Game programmers and artists ect. make PLENTY of money already.

What's to stop developers from making an incomplete game, selling it for normal price (which is now $60), and selling you the rest of the game on the Marketplace? Don't like this one bit at all. The horse-armor should have been in the damn game in the first place.

Posted: userComment.createdDate by Krakrok
Hey, here's an idea. Include EVERYTHING in the standard edition of any given game and put any extra content in the special edition, so that way you know upfront exactly what you're getting or missing out on. I'm talking about GAME content. I've already paid more than most folks have for the same game and got a bunch of crap that does nothing. Let's face it, the "special" editions of most games aren't really that special. I do see this paying-for-downloadable-extras stuff getting out of hand. I have yet to give Microsoft or any developer more money than I paid for the 360 or a game, and I truly hope I'm not forced to because someone gets greedy.

This should be cool! I'm really stoked to check this stuff out. The lower price on the PC version makes scense because PC gamers arn't use to paying for content like that. I really hope in the future they offer new dungeons or things along those lines. What else makes me think is with the PC version you can get the TES Contruction Set to make custom content. They should run a contest to find some really good content from the set and offer the winning ones over the Marketplace; would be totally awsome! Cheers!

Whatever, this is retarded.
Posted: userComment.createdDate by crono27
Sorry, but I'm gonna have to agree with Tylahedras and full_auto on this one. All of the content should be in the retail box you get at the store. I don't own the game, but if I did this would REALLY piss me off. WHY should we have to shell out MORE money to get all the content? What's to stop developers from taking 10% (or more) of the content off the top of a completed game and then charging whatever they want for it via download? It's total BS. I guess $60 plus tax for a new game isn't enough for em eh? I was considering buying the game and an Xbox 360 but now that I know about this I don't think I'm going to.

Posted: userComment.createdDate by sherlocke-homeless
Microsoft didn't make the Xbox 360 because they liked games, they did it to make money. If they can pinch $2.50 out of the little kiddies and the big tools (which they can, and they do) for some special horse blanket that they say enhances the gaming experience... well, I've already said it. If you don't like it, don't pay for it, but you will because you are sheep have a nice day.

I dont like the idea...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by jakob493
I dont really like the idea of buying items in games with ACTUAL money. I mean, its like those arcade games in malls and movie theaters: it doesnt really matter how good at the game you are, it just matters how many quarters you have. I mean, any 5 year old could beat Time Crisis on an arcade console if he has $10 worth of change. But in console games, specifically MMOs, it also adds the unfairness that if a person playing the game doesnt want to spend more money on a game that costs $60, he has the disadvantage to even a loaded beginner that can just buy the best items. I dont know much about Oblivion, but this is just a general idea towards the concept. If I got any information about this wrong, sorry.

I expect a free mod soon

I figure some l33t hax0r will crack the armor and distribute it for free amongst the PC users. Not like it matters though, since PUTTING ARMOR ON A HORSE IS STUPID.

i agree

I agree with caleb. the fact of the matter is you don't have to buy it if you do not want to. So please don't whine about it. Yes you are going to have to pay for a shiny new hat. But the difference is i can get a shiny new hat on the game and it only cost imaginary money. This is exactly what bungie and microsoft did with the new maps. Well, to a higher extent i guess. The maps for halo 2 were almost necessary. anyway, what im tryin to say is don't whine, just don't buy.

This is so wrong

I was fine with Bungie's Halo 2 map stratagy, but this crosses a line. I want my games to be complete, I'm paying $60 for god's sake. So now I'm being told that is only for the "starter package" and for the real game I need to pay $2.50 PER ITEM. This is ridiculous.

Do the math...

ok so, an xbox 360 game (third party) is about $60... $3 is about 5 percent of $60, i doubt a little f***in suit of armor for a horse is worth 1/20 of an ENTIRE game... a reasonable price would be around the $.50-$1.00 range, think about all the crap theyre gunna tempt u to buy: oooo a new sword $3, oooo a new shoe $3, oooo a white spot for my horse's nose $3, oooo a mole for my knight... before u know it, ull be spendin $80+ on one game.

So 70$ wasn't enough?
Posted: userComment.createdDate by Tylahedras
Great, so let me get this strait, I lay out 70 bones on a game which is suppoosed to be complete, then they remind me they didn't do everything they could by tossing in 2-3$ downloads for content I should have had all along? I am going to pay a "premium" for a nifty hat? Come on, I would rather save marketplace for low dev cost game sales, not have the privilage of spending more on something they most likely left out specifically so they could charge me for it later. I don't like the idea that if I want to color Master Chief white in Halo 3 multiplayer I will need to shell out even more cash. Doesn't anyone else see that this micropayment crap will lead to incomplete games?

pissing & moaning about price...
Posted: userComment.createdDate by caleb_t
I know there will be a lot of complaining about the price. Just don't get it if you think its too expensive. It's that easy. If you have money to "toss" then by all means, but before it starts, we (I) don't care to listen to whining about the cost, just dont mess with it. Then maybe they (the company resposible) will drop the price's in the future. This being said. Have a great day, and don't run with sissors...unless you want to whine about the price.
