Aims & Scope

The International Journal of the Sociology of Language seeks to attract readers and contributors from all parts of the world and from all disciplines that pertain to the study of language use in social behavior.

Purpose and philosophy

The IJSL is dedicated to the development of the sociology of language in its broadest sense, as a truly international and interdisciplinary field in which various approaches, theoretical and empirical, supplement and complement each other, contributing thereby to the growth of language-related knowledge, applications, values and sensitivities. To better achieve its purpose most issues of IJSL will be devoted to specific topics (although occasional issues of separate and unrelated papers may also be published).

Editorial policy

The policy of one topic per issue means that all of the articles to appear in a given issue are commissioned, or come as a result of a relatively long lead time "call for papers" on a particular subject. Each issue is entrusted to an Issue Editor whose plans for the issue (contents, participants, etc. ) are subject to the approval of the General Editor and his associates/staff. Unsolicited manuscripts for consideration for the 'Singles' issue should be sent in duplicate in the IJSL style (see "Instructions for Authors") to the 'Singles' Editor, Dr. Florian Coulmas. Contributions are invited on the topic of small languages and small language communities and should be sent in duplicate and in IJSL style (see "Instructions for Authors") to the Assistant Editor, Dr. Nancy C. Dorian.

International Journal of the Sociology of Language is a peer-reviewed journal of international scope.
