Xubuntu releases:

Minimum system requirements

You need 256 MB RAM to run the Live CD or 256 MB RAM to install. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 64 MB RAM at install time.

To install Xubuntu with the standard installer (Ubiquity), you need 4.4 GB of free space on your hard disk. The Alternate Install CD only requires you to have 2 GB of free space on your hard disk.

Once installed, Xubuntu can run with starting from 256 (or even just 192) MB RAM, but it is strongly recommended to have at least 512 MB RAM.

Xubuntu Mirrors (11.10 Oneiric Ocelot):

Please download Xubuntu from a mirror in a country close to you and review the release notes before installing.
Note: If you know how to use BitTorrent, the Torrent downloads are preferred.

Xubuntu Mirrors (10.04 Lucid Lynx):

Please download Xubuntu from a mirror in a country close to you.
Note: If you know how to use BitTorrent, the Torrent downloads are preferred.

Free Xubuntu CDs

Although Ubuntu's ShipIt service is not available for Xubuntu, On-Disk.com generously provides free Xubuntu CDs under its free disk service Quick Ship:

These CDs provide the latest version of Xubuntu free of charge, only charging for shipping costs. Do note that this is an independent third-party project that is not run by Canonical nor the Xubuntu developers.

Upgrading

Please make sure to backup your data before attempting an upgrade.

If you are using Xubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" or newer, you can upgrade your system using the update manager.

  1. If you are running a Long Term Support release (e.g. 8.04) and want to upgrade to a normal release (e.g. 8.10), then you first need to make sure a new release is listed in the Update Manager. You can do so by opening Applications -> System -> Update Manager -> Settings, then, in the "Updates" tab, set "Show new distribution releases" to "Normal releases".

  2. Open Applications->System->Update Manager.

  3. Click the Check button to check for new updates.
  4. If there are any updates to install, use the Install Updates button to install them, and press Check again after that is complete.
  5. A message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release.

  6. Click the Yes, Upgrade Now button.
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Install Xubuntu from Ubuntu

If you have an existing Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Edubuntu installation, it is possible to install Xubuntu and retain your current installation. To do so, just go into Synaptic (or Adept if you use Kubuntu) and install the xubuntu-desktop package. Next time you login, you can choose Xubuntu from the Session menu on the login screen.

If you want to have a default Xubuntu install but have installed Ubuntu or Kubuntu, you can remove all Gnome and KDE packages by following instructions on this page.

Dual Boot

Since Xubuntu shares the Ubuntu-base, please reference the Ubuntu wiki for dual boot (installation while keeping another operating system) instructions.
