New Jersey joins Arizona and Texas in Tesla sales ban

New Jersey joins Arizona and Texas in Tesla sales ban

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) met today to approve a new regulation banning Tesla from selling its Model S in the state. The ban will take effect on April 1. Two other states, Arizona and Texas, enforce similar rules that prevent auto manufacturers from making direct sales to consumers.

As CNET covered in an earlier story, Tesla had been in talks with New Jersey administration officials and the NJMVC over the rule change. On Monday, the NJMVC abruptly notified Tesla that it would meet to approve the rule change at a session today, bypassing a legislative process.

Tesla fighting dealer rule change in New Jersey

Tesla fighting dealer rule change in New Jersey

If you were planning to buy a Tesla Model S in New Jersey, you might have to go to New York. On Monday, New Jersey fast-tracked a rule change that would effectively eliminate direct sales from a manufacturer such as Tesla to consumers. The new regulation was supported by an association of New Jersey auto dealers.

Tesla currently has two stores and one service center in New Jersey. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC) had, up to this week, approved licenses for the stores to sell vehicles. Tesla had been in discussions with the NJMVC and members of the … Read more

Kia Soul EV joins electric car ranks

Kia Soul EV joins electric car ranks

Kia chose the Chicago Auto Show, beginning this week, as the debut venue for the Soul EV, the electric version of Kia's boxy little hatchback SUV thing. The standard Soul model received a major update for the 2014 model year. The Soul EV will be Kia's first electric car.

As one of Kia's more distinctive models, the Soul seems a good choice on which to base an electric vehicle. It will go up against cars such as the Chevy Spark EV, Fiat 500e, and the veteran Nissan Leaf.

In that crucial measure of EV performance, range, the … Read more

Nissan cranks 400 horsepower from three cylinders

Racing might seem frivolous to the uninformed, but it serves as a proving ground for technologies that will find their way into production cars. Nissan will hit endurance races this season with an extraordinarily efficient engine in its ZEOD race car that should be the basis for new developments in its production cars.

The ZEOD race car uses a design similar to the DeltaWing car Nissan raced last season. For power, it will use a gasoline-electric hybrid system that should be competitive with the likes of the Audi R18 e-tron. In the last two 24 Hours of Le Mans races, … Read more

Samsung patent filings show eye on electric vehicles

Samsung patent filings show eye on electric vehicles

Samsung is at least thinking about the future of electric vehicles, according to recent patent filings unearthed by the Wall Street Journal.

The consumer electronics giant has filed for several patents in both the US and South Korea this year related to electric vehicles, in areas ranging from engines to onboard electronics, and even tires, the Journal has discovered. Although Samsung acknowledged that the patents have been filed, it told the Journal that it has no plans to actually deliver electric vehicles to the market.

Plans (and "no plans") do change, or course. Sometimes, companies file for patents … Read more

Mon dieu! Voxan's big electric motorcycle packs 200 hp

PARIS -- The usual suspects like Honda, Yamaha, and BMW were at the Salon de la Moto, but the motorcycle that really stood out was a massive all-electric machine called the Wattman from Voxan Motors.

The French company debuted the unusual machine here at the sprawling show dedicated to motorcycles, scooters, and off-road four-wheelers. Although bystanders gave it a lot of attention, don't expect it to unseat any of the industry's incumbent players: they'll be built by hand, one at a time, for an "exclusive international clientele."

Silver Spring seeks new profits from smart-city infrastructure

Silver Spring seeks new profits from smart-city infrastructure

Wish your hometown had network-enabled streetlights? A company called Silver Spring Networks does, and Tuesday it unveiled a service designed to make the technology and other networked infrastructure more affordable.

Municipalities that want to network things like traffic lights, parking meters, natural-gas pipe monitors, water-main flow gauges, and public transit status boards now can subscribe to a service under which Silver Spring Networks installs and maintains the network. The option expands the company's business from selling technology to selling a service; that means cities can buy the service with steady payments, rather than a large investment up front to … Read more

Microsoft experiments with fuel cell-powered data center

Microsoft experiments with fuel cell-powered data center

There are cord cutters -- and then there are cord cutters.

Microsoft is considering data centers that use fuel cells to generate power right next to the servers they house rather than transmitting it from electrical power plants far away. The move could double efficiency compared with traditional data center design, which loses energy through transmission and conversion, Sean James, a Microsoft senior research program manager, said in a blog post Tuesday.

The cleanest fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into heat and electrical current, releasing water as exhaust. Microsoft, though, used more convenient methane-powered fuel cells, which release more … Read more

Nissan's don't-call-it-a-concept BladeGlider

Nissan's don't-call-it-a-concept BladeGlider

There must be something a little strange in the water at Nissan design headquarters. Over the last few years it's produced such funky models as the Juke and the Murano CrossCabriolet. And proving the point further, the company just released photos and video of the BladeGlider, a vehicle it insists is not a concept.

The BladeGlider is a three-seater vehicle with an electric drivetrain. In Nissan's press materials, it points out the BladeGlider shares engineering principles with the Leaf.

While both use lithium ion batteries, the BladeGlider gets two in-wheel motors on the rear wheels, as opposed to … Read more

Tesla tours West Coast to celebrate Supercharger network

Tesla tours West Coast to celebrate Supercharger network

Tesla owners, rabid as Apple fans, showed up in droves at an event in San Francisco to celebrate the completion of the company's West Coast Supercharger network. The stars of the event were two Model Ses in the midst of a road trip from San Diego to Vancouver.

The new Supercharger network lets Model S owners drive along the network completely free of charge.

The two cars making the journey had started out in San Diego the previous morning, making the 550-mile trip along Highway 101. Although the route planning called for four charging stops along the way, Tesla … Read more
