I want a private domain name

I've noticed that I may register my domain name in different spaces in the domain name structure. Which possibilities do I have?
As a private individual you have three space options for your domain registration:
  • directly under .no (chosenname.no)
  • under the category domain priv.no, which is reserved for individuals (chosenname.priv.no)
  • under one or more of the geographical domains administered by Norid (chosenname.selbu.no, chosenname.odda.no osv.)
How much does a priv.no domain cost?
We charge 60 NOK for the registration and 60 NOK annually for a domain name. You also have to pay the registrar for his services. The registrars set their own prices so we recommend that you check with different registrars before you decide which one to use. Choose a registrar from this list of registrars.
How many domains can I register?
From 17 June 2014 you can register up to 5 domain names under .no, up to 5 domain names under priv.no, and up to 5 domain names under each geographical domains administered by Norid.
What is a personal ID?
The personal ID (PID) is a synonym for your national identity number. This way, you can be identified without having your national identity number published. Your ID is unique and will not change.
You request your personal ID from Norid's PID automat, and will receive it within at a maximum one hour.
What is the personal ID used for?
You give the personal ID to the registrar when you apply for a domain name or if you are asking for updates later. It is published in Norid's whois database along with your name.
How do I check if anyone have rights to the name I want to register?
You can check registrations in the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre, the register of trade marks and the register of patents. Someone can also have rights to a name that has not been registered, for instance can a name be protected because it has been used for a long time, even if it is not a trademark.
I now have a domain name. How do I connect email and a web page to it?
Your registrar will help you with setting up the technical services you have chosen. Many registrars offer tools that can be used for making and maintaining you own web pages.
I do not want the name I have registered, how can I get it deleted?
Contact your registrar and ask him to delete the domain. More about deleting domains.
I no longer live in Norway, what will happen to my domain name?
With the status "emigrated" (utvandret) in the National Register (Folkeregisteret), you can both keep the domains you have as well as register new domains. However, you must maintain a Norwegian postal address in the database.
I have changed my name in the National Register (Folkeregisteret), what do I have to do?
Your new name must be affiliated to your personal identifier (PID). You change this yourself in our PID automat, but remember to inform your registrar to get your name changed in our domain name database. Step by step:
  • submit your national identity number and your new name in the PID automat
  • the change will be qued for control against the National Register (Folkeregisteret). If the new name corresponds to the name that is registered in the National Register, the connection between your personal identifier and your new name will be updated
  • contact your registrar and give him your personal identifier so that he can update your name in our database

What is a registrar?
A registrar is a company that offers and provides services related to domains. The registrar helps you when you want to apply for a domain name. He also helps you with changes to the information related to the domain name, and with renewal, transfer, or termination of the domain name registration.
Why do I need to contact a registrar?
The Norwegian scheme is set up with registrars as the link between your organization and Norid. All domains within .no must be associated with a registrar, and all applications for domain names must be submitted through the registrar. You cannot register the domain name directly with Norid.
What does the registrar do?
The registrar helps you when you want to apply for a domain name. He also helps you with changes to the information related to the domain name, and with renewal, transfer, or termination of the domain name registration. Read more about registrars.
Where can I find a registrar?
You can choose from about 400 registrars. Note that not all of these offer services to private individuals. List of registrars.
Which registrar should I choose?
Norid has a policy of equal treatment of all the registrars with whom we have an agreement, and therefore we do not recommend one registrar rather than another. It may however be wise to check references and investigate the prices and terms offered by several registrars before you decide. Always ask which services are included in the price.
Can I change the registrar for the domain?
Yes. Contact another Norid registrar and ask him to move your domain to his firm.
How can I find the registrar for my domain?
You can search in the whois database for .no. This guide may be useful.
I have received a warning which says that my domain no longer is affiliated with a registrar. What does this mean?
All domains under .no must be affiliated with a registrar. If you still want to keep the domain, you must contact your old registrar or find a new registrar as soon as possible.

Register a new domain name

Who can apply for .no domain names?
From 17 June 2014 private individuals as well as companies and other organizations can register Norwegian domain names. All holders must have a Norwegian post address. Organizations must be registered in the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre (Enhetsregisteret), and be one of these forms of organization types. You can find key information about your organization on the web site for the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre. Private individuals must be 18 years old and have theri ID number in the Folkeregisteret..

How do I apply for a domain name?
Contact a registrar (domain name provider). He helps you with the application process and submits the application form for you. You cannot apply to Norid directly. Read more about how to register a new domain name.
Can I send the application directly to Norid?
No, you must apply through a registrar. We do not accept applications that are not sent through a registrar.
How many domain names can I register?
A company or other organization can have A private individual can have (effective from 17 June 2014)
  • up to 5 domains directly within .no

Can the quota for domain names be extended?
The quotas are fixed according to the domain name policy, and Norid makes no exceptions from this rule.
Which domain names can I choose?
In principle, you are free to choose the domain name. However, you cannot choose names that are in use by other organizations, or names that for various reasons are prohibited or reserved for technical, ethical or national considerations. You also have a duty to ensure that your registration of a domain name does not infringe another party's right to the same name. Remember that the responsibility always rests with you. Can I register a domain name with special Norwegian characters?
Yes, you can. Read more about which characters you can use in your domain name and what you should be aware of if you want to use special Norwegian characters.
Can I register domain names with only one character?
The .no domain name policy does not allow domain names with only one character. See the .no domain name policy for more information.
Do I need to supply my street address in the application, or is my post address sufficient?
A post address is sufficient as long as it has a Norwegian postcode and area.
Can I register a .no domain anonymously and not have my contact information published in the whois-database?
All domain name holders have to register their contact information, which will be published in the whois database. Postal address and email address are compulsory, while phone number is voluntary. An enterprise has to register a contact person, but does not have to supply a private address or phone number for the contact persons registered on the domain. It is sufficient to supply contact information for the organization, as long as the contact person can be reached there.
How do I register domain names under other top-level domains?
Regulations and application forms vary for the various top-level domains. You can find information about both national and generic top-level domains at the registration services for various top-level domains. Norid only processes applications for registration within .no.
How can I find out what domain names are registered on my organization or on me as a private individual?
You can search for all Norwegian domain names in the whois-databasen. For organization you search by using the organization number. Private individuals use their personal ID (PID). The domain names will appear on the bottom of the page.
Are there lists of domains which will be made available?
No, we do not publish list of domains which are made available. Check the whois-database. It is updated daily.
How much does a .no domain name registration cost?
We only have information about the prices that the registrar pays to us, not about the prices charged by the individual registrar. The registrars are free to determine the prices of their services to you as their customer, and the prices will vary from registrar to registrar. Norid's price list is shown here.
How do I pay for the registration of my domain?
You will always get your invoices from the registrar. Norid's price list is shown here.
How soon will my application be processed?
The application is usually processed as soon as we receive it. Your will get the result from your registrar, and the time this takes depends on the registrar. Private individuals must first get a personal ID (PID) from a service run by Norid. The service run every night. This means that the first time you apply for a domain, your application cannot be processed until you have received your PID. (The day after it was ordered).
What are the requirements for becoming a legal contact for a domain?
The legal contact has to be employed at or be directly affiliated to your company. She or he must have a Norwegian address.

Renew a domain name

How do I renew my domain name?
Your registrar (ISP) renews your domain for you. Usually it is done automatically unless you ask them not to renew it or don't pay invoices you receive from them. If you are not sure whether your domain has been renewed, you should contact your registrar. Read more about renewal of domain names.
Who is responsible for renewing the domain name?
As the domain name holder, you are responsible for getting your domain renewed through a registrar.
What happens if I do not renew the domain name?
If a domain is not renewed it might, as the worst case, be deleted, even if you have paid the fee to the registrar. You will receive a warning from us first and get a chance to renew the domain through a registrar.
I have paid the invoice I received from my registrar, but have received a warning because my domain has not been renewed. What is happening?
This means that your registrar has not renewed your domain. You must contact your registrar as soon as possible. You can also contact a new registrar and ask him to renew your domain.
I have received a warning which says that my domain has not been renewed and that Norid has started a process to remove the domain. What does this mean?
This means that your registrar has not renewed your domain.You must contact your registrar as soon as possible. You can also contact a new registrar and ask him to renew your domain.
I have received a warning which says that my domain no longer is affiliated with a registrar. What does this mean?
All domains under .no must be affiliated with a registrar. When your domain is not affiliated to a registrar, it will not be renewed. If you still want to keep the domain, you must contact your old registrar or find a new registrar as soon as possible.
I have received a warning because my domain has not been renewed, but I no longer want the domain. What do I do?
If you no longer want to keep the domain you don't have to do anything. You can ignore further warnings from Norid. The domain will be deleted after a while.

How do I pay for the renewal of my domain?
You will receive an invoice from your registrar. Norid never bills domain holders directly. If you have not received an invoice you should contact your registrar.

But I have never ordered a domain name?
If a domain name is registered on your organization or on you as a private individual, an application for the domain name must have been submitted at some stage. You can find the registration date by searching in the whois database for .no.

Change registered information

How do I change information registered on my domain?
Contact your registrar. Tell him what changes you want to have done, for instance your email address, phone number or a contact person. The registrar will then update the whois-database.
Can I change the domain name?
No, the domain name cannot be changed. If you want to change your domain name, you must contact the registrar for the domain.He will delete the existing domain name and register the new name. Please note that changing a domain is regarded as a new registration, and a registration fee has to be paid. The registrar will probably invoice the service accordingly.
How do I change the organization number for the domain?
Contact your registrar. He will transfer the domain name to the new organization number.
Can I report changes directly to Norid?
No, all changes must be made through the registrar, who takes care of the update with us.
Why must I update registered data?
From time to time it is necessary to reach a contact person for the domain. This could be due to technical problems or disputes. In these situations, it is vital that the contact data is up to date. As the domain name holder, you are responsible for keeping your contact information updated. Read more about why and how to update information.
How much does it cost to change registered information for a domain?
Norid does not invoice the registrar for changes to domain information. However, you can expect the registrar to invoice you for the work involved in making the change.
Remember that changing the domain is not regarded as a change, but as a new registration. It is therefore likely that the registrar will process and invoice this as a new registration.

Transfer a domain

Can I transfer the domain to a new organization number without contacting the registrar?
No. All registrations must take place through the registrar. Norid does not accept applications from domain name holders directly.
We have wound up our organization in Norway and transferred it to another country. Can the domain name be transferred there?
No. The organization must be registered in the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre in order to hold a domain name within .no.
I have wound up my organization and deleted it in the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre. Can I transfer the domain name to myself as an individual?
No. All .no domains must be associated with a valid organization number in the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre.
How much does it cost to transfer domain names?

How soon will domains registered on organisations which are removed from The Br�nn�ysund Register Centre be made available?

Domains are not automatically deleted or made available when the holder is deleted from The Br�nn�ysund Register Centre. If you are interested in a domain that is already registered you can try the following points of contact:

Delete a domain name

I have requested a deletion of my domain, but I have changed my mind. What can I do to stop the process?
Contact Norid immediately via email ([email protected]) and phone (+47 07355). Ask us to cancel the deletion. Norid will send a confirmation via email as soon as it is done.
I have not paid the annual fee for my domain name. How long will it take before it is deleted?
It depends on the registrar. If the domain name is not renewed, it is placed in quarantine after 60 days and deleted after 90 days.
I have requested deletion of my domain name, but I am still getting invoices in the post. What should I do?
Contact the registrar for the domain and ask him to delete it. Billing routines vary from registrar to registrar. Some bill in advance, others in arrears. In any case, you must expect to pay for the period during which you have held the domain name.
I have received a notice that my domain name is related to an organization that no longer exists in the Br�nn�ysund Register Centre, and that it may therefore be deleted. What must I do to keep it?
Contact your registrar and ask him to help you transfer the domain to an enterprise with a valid organization number.
I have received a notice that my domain name has not been renewed, and may therefore be deleted. What must I do to keep it?
Contact your registrar and ask him to renew the domain.
I have received a notice that my domain no longer is affiliated with a registrar, and may therefore be deleted. What does this mean?
All domains under .no must be affiliated with a registrar. When your domain is not affiliated to a registrar, it will not be renewed. If you still want to keep the domain, you must contact your old registrar or find a new registrar as soon as possible.
I have received a notification which says that my domain has been deleted. What can I do to get it back?
To get back your domain you have to contact a registrar and ask him to reregister the domain. The registrar will most likely charge the same as for a new registration.
I am renting a domain name from a domain name holder. All of a sudden, the domain no longer works. What happened and what can I do about this?

There can be several reasons why the domain name does not work. The first thing you need to check is whether it still exists. You do this by looking it up in the whois database. If you find it there, you can contact the one who is listed as responsible for the domain. If the domain does not exist in the database, you may apply for it yourself.

In general, renting a domain name is an unsafe arrangement for the renter, as the holder has all the formal rights to the domain. He may delete it, transfer it to others, change the name servers etc., and you, the user, have no way of preventing this. We do not recommend this solution.

Can I get a list of all the domain names in Norway?
No, we do not distribute lists of all the registered .no domain names. In connection with applications for domain names, Norid receives a great deal of information about the applicants. To prevent misuse of the information, we have clear guidelines (in Norwegian only) specifying how it is to be presented and handled. In the whois database it is possible to check whether a domain name is available, but we do not issue lists of all registered domain names. Nor do we allow bulk downloads of our database. Complaints

Someone has registered my company name as their domain, and established a web page. Can I file a complaint?
If you think that someone has registered a domain name illicitly, the case can be brought before the Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee or the legal system. More information about where and how to complain can be found here.
I have found a webpage with illegal contents. What can Norid do about this?
If you suspect the contents on a web page to be in breach with Norwegian law, you should contact the police. Norid does not check the content of web pages, and we do not have the mandate to do anything with web pages that appear to break the law. Any reactions have to come from the police or from the Norwegian legal system. Read more about responsibility.
