Microsoft is releasing DirectX 8.0 at the crack of 12:01 A.M. PST on Saturday, November 11. However, it is already available now for download at some of the download sites that Microsoft uses.
Here's a list of the new features included in DirectX 8.0:

I wonder if Microsoft is releasing DirectX 8 so that the massive downloads will happen over the weekend and not affect businesses on Monday? That would be nice of MS, but if that was the case it could have announced download locations at 5 P.M. PST today.
DirectX 8 is billed as a “major milestone for Windows” and it has some nice features, but to me it looks more like icing on an already appealing 3D cake enabled by DirectX 7. DirectX 8 enables vertex and pixel shaders for improved 3D realism, but the rest of the listed improvements seem more incremental than anything. While DirectX 8 seems worthwhile, I don't know if it's quite a major milestone–at least from the information that Microsoft is providing. What really matters is how the 3D card makers can use it.

| Hey, Linux ain't ALL free… (2:30am EST Mon Nov 13 2000) It takes tremendous amounts of time to learn the ins and outs of an operating system, and this is simply so you can USE the thing, forget about real understanding or troubleshooting. I've been screwin' around with MS stuff for 12 years or so, no real formal training, and people think I'm a GENIUS, when most of the time anything I have come to understand as far as how to make hardware and programs work properly comes from an outside source on the internet. Fortunately I have an excellent memory and thus don't usually have to look up the same thing twice. Now, most people aren't going to go to college just to learn how to understad the complex workings of computers, so their training is limited to experience, and a little amount of reading manuals if absolutely required to do so after all other attempts at success have been exhausted. Is Linux so much easier to learn and use than Windows? Will an average person be able to troubleshoot problems on their own? The answer is usually going to be “no”, and so they will require tech support. Well, SOMEBODY has to pay for that, don't they? Most people are going to end up BUYING a retail copy of Linux that comes with a printed manual, because those durned CD-ROM .pdf and .doc, etc. files are so annoying to read, assuming they even learn of their existence. Accordingly, most of the applications are going to be paid for, because of the same reasons. So you can either make computing your specialty, learn all about how to download Linux for “free”, learn how to program and compile your own apps, learn how to make other amateur's freeware buggy apps work, and spend countless hours doing this sort of thing, or you're gonna FORK OUT SOME DOUGH to have somebody else do it. Ms is in it for the money, this causes quick releases and buggy software, linux doesnt have this problem because people always keep changing it so the bugs get worked out. But because there is so many differenet versions it still gets bugs. Same goes for the Ghz wars, When Intel is ahead AMD rush things and release buggy CPU's when AMD is ahead Intel does the same thing (why do you think the early PIII's got pulled back) all in all i couldnt really care less whats better and whats worse. All OS(s) have their strengths and weaknesses and to say that one OS is better than another, without putting the parameter for what that OS is used for is STUPID. To say that the uptime for NT is about 14 days, is quite interesting since I have an NT box, running MSSQL-IIS with over 10,000 users without a downtime for over 6 months. I use Linux at home and Windows ME, both have their specific use and both are performing very well. MS is just exercising their marketing brilliance by attacking the majority of PC users. Most users don't want operating system where one needs to compile in the kernel new functions. Therefore, windows answers that requirements. In the case of linux, RedHat does have it a bit easier than MS, as a lot of it's programming force consists of geeks/hackers/bored programmmers which aren't paid for the work they do. RedHat still profits from this work though… MS is still quite the viable business though (or can YOU (no-one specific… just in general) run their business better?). To say their setup produces buggier software is wrong… they're just a bigger company and can't be at all places at the same time (linux will enter the same arena pretty soon)… As for the merits of an OS… sure, they're all great… (to 80's standards) and they're all crappy… (to 2010 standards)…. | Be careful (5:34pm EST Tue Dec 26 2000) Installed DirectX 8.0 on my system with SiS 530 chipset. It permanently disabled H/W acceleration. The '530 drivers are certified compatable with DirectX 7.0. Performance went in the tank with SW emulation. MS says to install new drivers, but none are available. There is NO process for reverting back to 7.0. Guess MS doesn't have to be compatable, even with itself … – by VERY unhappy with MS |

(EAX2.0, Sensaura etc…) I'd love to have much more control over the actual DMA transfer as it frees the buffer playback from the actual sample memory (much like the SPU on the PSX 1) and not have to resort to 'streaming' everything and other associated kludges. Open the windows file. then open the system file find the direct draw or ddraw file remove it. then go out of system file then go to system back up file it may be hidden so make sure you go to the view file options and activate no hidden files. in the system back up file remove the ddraw. Now get a disk with directx 7 copy the file and decompress the file and copy the ddraw file place it in the system file and system back up file. restart your computer and in the diagx box it may say directx 8 but if you check the files it directx 7. | SIS530 WORKS WITH DIRECTX 8.0 100% (4:46am EST Mon Aug 06 2001) like all SiS users who have downloaded and installed directx8.0 and then realized that many features like Hardware acceleration were not working this is a solution that works 100% with my computer and i hope this works 4 u. I believe the secret to making DirectX8 work with the SiS530 card is to download the Uncertified drivers for the card, i repeat download the drivers that are NOT certified by microsoft (i.e v1.05a—-i currently use this) and NOT to download the latest SiS driver (1.08a) which IS MICrosoft certified. doing this allows u to use Dx8 and not have to face problems like Hardware Acceleration, DDraw acceleration and others not working.
