Apple keeps making the stock Notes app more and more powerful with each iteration in iOS. In iOS 9 we received the ability to add links and pictures. Then we were able to use it as a canvas to sketch anything with several 3rd party styluses or the Apple Pencil on an iPad.
Later on in iOS 9’s life cycle, Apple also added Passcode and Touch ID protection to Notes so you no longer had to worry about your notes that contained sensitive information.
With all of these improvements, Apple’s native Notes app began to look like a reasonable alternative to Evernote. If you work all day on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, then Notes app is a no brainer choice to store notes, ideas, checklists, and another information for free.
Not stopping there, in iOS 10 Apple has added collaborative features. You can now share your notes, grocery lists, tasks needed to be done, or other ideas with friends and family.
If you’ve already updated your iPhone and iPad with iOS 10 and want to start sharing your notes, here’s how:
How to share notes from the Notes app in iOS 10
- Once inside the Notes app, Open the note you want to share
- Tap on the new collaboration icon (the round button with a person and a plus sign)
- Pick an app to send the invitations or copy the note’s link to send it manually.
People you share your notes with will receive an iCloud link to that note, and if they’ve already installed iOS 10 they’ll be taken right to the Notes app upon clicking the link. If the people you invite haven’t yet installed iOS 10 or macOS Sierra, they will be taken to iCloud web pages.
Using Notes app on the iPhone, iPad or Mac? What’s your favorite feature?
While I haven’t switched entirely to Notes yet, it’s becoming a more convincing alternative every day. Have you switched to the Notes app as your note taking app of choice? What’s your most favorite feature? Let me know in the comments below!
I have always used Notes, but just for me personally. I love the new checklist feature and the ability to add images. My kids & I all recently upgraded our phones to IOS 10, although none of us have that person icon in order to collaborate on notes, which is a bit frustrating, since I was under the impression that we’d be able to do that.
I have upgraded to iOS 10 and my notes app doesn’t show the “collaboration button”.
It is tied to iCloud. Make sure your Notes app is connected.
I’ve also upgraded to 10.0.2 and not only is there no ‘collaboration’ option/ icon but I can no longer share or save notes to dropbox. iPhone 6. Any ideas? I’ve tried rebooting but don’t want to delete the app and reinstall in case I lose all my notes (over 500!)
You have to go to settings/ iCloud and make sure Notes is checked to have access.
I’ve also upgraded to 10.0.2 and there no ‘collaboration’ option/ icon on my iPhone 6. My iCloud Drive is set to “On” and “Notes” is switched on.
Check your Accounts tab in Settings > Notes and see if that may be the reason when you’re creating or trying to collaborate on a new note.
