The length of station yard: | 102 m. |
Architects of the station: | Y.O.Hajiyev, Sh.S.Guliyev. |
It is one of the initial 5 stations opened on "Baki Soveti-Narimanov" stage. As this station is situated close to central railway station of the capital, it is of great importance not only for metro, but also as a part of significant transport junction. Besides that, it attracts attention as a junction of metro`s two important lines.
In consideration of abovementioned notes and the closeness of the station to downtown and public, social and cultural objects, it is the most impacted station and called as "city gates".
Its previous name was given in honor of the establishment of Soviet government. As for the project, it was constructed as a common architectural ensemble with railway terminal.
There was placed a stamping panel "History of the transport - from wheel to rocket" in the cash hall of station upper vestibule.
On one side of the entrance, there were described 3 stamped hands shaking each other made of metal, but on opposite side a symbolic key of the city.
There was described an emblem reflecting sea waves and three torches on rear side of central hall.
The floor of the station was covered with red granite outlined with black stripes having an effect of national carpet. Walls of pillars and platform were worked out with "Ufaley" light blue marble made in Ural that represents a unity of width and simplicity together with red-and-black granite floor cover of the station.
After the independence is granted, in honor of the first democratic republic of the East, the station was renamed "28 May" and there were conducted appropriate changes on design.
In central hall, towards the escalators there was a mosaic panel of "Old City landscape" where the description of moon and eight-pointed star were reflected in the middle, against the background of the numerous domes.
On upper side of the central hall (towards the passage to "Jafar Jabbarli" station) there was placed the bas-relief of Mammadamin Rasulzadeh, one of the leaders of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic with his saying "The banner raised once, never falls" which was set in the frame of eight-pointed star against the background of three-colored Azerbaijan flag.
On pillars of central hall, there was set a mosaic panel devoted to Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Wooden eight-pointed stars contained ten ceramic statues ("National army soldiers", "General of the artillery", "Mother and child", "Soldier guarding oil wells", "Musavat" members reading papers", "Soldiers of Turkish army") and saucers between pillars on each yard. Those eight-pointed stars were in harmony with big ones being on the floor since opening (the number of these stars were 9). There were engraved "1918-20" figures on one of the starry and moony saucers, and "28 may" words on another one.
Panel was illuminated with hidden lights. Vent ducts on station yards had direction towards tunnel and were hidden behind separate cast decorative aluminium patterns between pillars incessantly. Eight-pointed stars are of importance among ornamental patterns.
On 1993, when "Jafar Jabbarli" station opened, the passage between two stations was put into operation as well. On 2003, the ceiling of sloping passage with three-row escalators was reconstructed and asbestos sheeting was replaced with bright aluminium shape.
In terms of the state program connected with perspective development of Baku metro, old escalators of LT-3 type were replaced with 4 "Viktoriya" escalators of German company "ThyssenKrupp" manufactured for stations of great depth, and escalators were put into operation on September 15, 2010.
It became the first metro station of the capital of great depth with 2 exits. On December 30, 2009, with the participation of Azerbaijan Republic President Ilham Aliyev there was put in commission the second exit of the station at a depth of 40 metres located in Salatin Askerova str.
3 escalators of ET-3M type manufactured for stations of great depth operate at the station consisting of vestibule constructed on modern architectural style and underground pedestrian passage.
The length of pedestrian tunnel is 165 m. Through this tunnel, passengers can easily go to "Jafar Jabbarli" station besides "28 May" by means of this tunnel.
In 2013, there was started renovation of the station. On May 5, 2015, the station received its passengers. The ceiling and floor of the central hall of platform were decorated with national ornamental patterns which created single composition.
Bright illumination and new light colored marble layer of the walls make this pattern more effective. There were placed illuminated road signs at station yards. Walls and vent ducts were worked out on new style.
Upper vestibule of the station was designed modernly. New construction of the station is 2 meters higher than a former dome and in terms of future projects, here is located new underpass to "Jafar Jabbarli" station.
There was installed round illumination system at domical area of the vestibule.
At the entrance, the place of automatic checkpoint was removed forward which gives an opportunity for preventing from passenger density and free movement of them.
Besides that, the entrance hall became wider for 150 square meters which ensures normal movement of passengers between entrance doors and cash hall.
The fragment of national mugam "Garabagh shikastasi" sounds in the trains entering the station.
