Summary |
The simulation hypothesis is the hypothesis that we live in a simulation. The simulation hypothesis is a metaphysical hypothesis, not an epistemic hypothesis, but some argue that careful consideration of the metaphysical hypothesis can teach valuable epistemic lessons. The simulation hypothesis is related to the digital physics hypothesis, i.e., the hypothesis that physical reality (or anyway that portion of it with which we are in causal contact) is ultimately computational or `digital'. But the simulation hypothesis further states that there is some kind of higher reality, presumably including a creator, living outside of the simulation. Moreover, not all simulations are digital. |
