Location Types and Services Glossary

Postal services are available in many places besides stand-alone Post Office buildings. For example, the Approved Postal Provider® program gives customers access to basic Postal services in third-party retail locations. This glossary describes places listed in Find Locations and their most popular services. All location services are listed on individual entry pages.

An Approved Postal Provider® is usually a retail location such as a grocery store or an office supply store. Most retail outlets are open when the Post Office is closed. All providers sell stamp booklets. Some have mail drop-off boxes or can help you ship a package.

Most collection boxes are freestanding mailboxes such as the familiar USPS Blue Box, special white mailboxes for prepaid Priority Mail Express® items, lobby drop off slots, or office building mail chutes. The location's last collection time is in the location details.

Open or Close content below Contract Postal Units (CPU)

CPUs are located within existing businesses. While not freestanding Post Offices, CPUs provide a full range of USPS retail products and services at regular USPS prices.

A National Retailer is an Approved Postal Provider that provides shipping and mailing services as well as sells stamps.

A Post Office is staffed by a Postal Service employee and has window service hours. Many Post Offices have open, after hour lobbies with kiosk and PO Box access.

A few kiosks are in large shopping malls. Most are in Post Office lobbies and are available when the Post Office counter is closed. You can buy stamps, weigh packages, and print Priority Mail® and Priority Mail Express® shipping labels at kiosks. Bring packing tape and you can ship your items in our free boxes.

A Village Post Office sells a limited selection of Postal products and services. Village Post Offices are not stand-alone buildings but areas within existing businesses such as a store or library.
