  1. ‘Hybrid warfare’ in Europe and deadly blast in Indiapublished at 17:04 GMT 10 November

    Thomas Copeland
    BBC Verify Live journalist

We’ll be closing this live page shortly - so before we go here’s a quick recap of what BBC Verify has been covering today.

The EU’s top official has described a series of drone incursions across the continent as "hybrid warfare" waged by Russia. We’ve mapped where those drone sightings have been in Europe and spoken to an expert about the evidence of Russian involvement.

The team has also verified footage of a deadly explosion in the Indian capital New Delhi, videos showing the devastating impact of Typhoon Fung-wong on the Philippines and clips of an air strike on a key Russian Black Sea port.

Plus, we’ve debunked a false claim shared by US President Donald Trump about “royalty” payments to his predecessor Barack Obama that originated on a satirical news website.

Our late verification journalist will continue monitoring social media for material from Delhi as well as responding to any breaking news through the evening.

BBC Verify Live will be back with you tomorrow morning so please do join us then.

Just before 14:00 GMT (19:30 local time), reports started coming in of an explosion in New Delhi. Verified videos shared on social media have helped us confirm a car was on fire and at least one body on the ground on Netaji Subhash Marg, a major road near the city’s Red Fort.

We can tell three clips of the flaming wreckage were filmed at the junction with Chandni Chowk Road in front of the gates to the fort. Despite it being after dark, the videos show the area was full of people including those using the busy metro station nearby.

A fourth clip filmed after the fire was extinguished shows several burnt vehicles and makes clear how close the explosion was to a police post by the fort, while another video shows a body lying about 25m (80ft) from the site.

Police officials say at least eight people have been killed. The cause of the blast is being investigated.

  4. Trump shares false claim about ‘Obama royalties’ that originated on satirical websitepublished at 15:28 GMT 10 November

A post on Truth Social by Donald Trump with a screenshot of a false claim about former President Barack Obama. Trump posted it with the Word "wow". BBC Verify has added a "false" label

US President Donald Trump has shared a false claim on his Truth Social platform that his administration halted $2.5m (£1.9m) annual payments to Barack Obama for “royalties linked to Obamacare” and that the former Democratic president had received $40m in these payments since 2010.

Obamacare, officially known as the Affordable Care Act, was the flagship healthcare legislation passed during Obama’s first term and Trump has criticised it.

The claim shared by Trump first circulated online in February and comes from a Facebook page called America's Last Line Of Defense but its post has a caption (which we have enlarged) labelling it “satire” and stating “nothing on this page is real”.

The original post with the false claim about Obama. We have enlarged and highlighted the disclaimer from America's Last Line of Defense saying '"satire" and "nothing on this page is real"

According to the page transparency tab, the account is run by Busta Troll. The BBC reported in 2018 that is a pseudonym used by Christopher Blair, a Maine-based blogger.

Blair told the BBC his pages carry disclaimers and they had “gone out of our way to market it as satire, to make sure that everybody knows that this isn’t real”.

False claims about Obama receiving royalties from Obamacare have circulated since at least 2017. This specific claim gathered hundreds of thousands of views when it was first shared in February and Trump’s Truth Social post has been liked more than 17,000 times.

We asked the White House why President Trump shared the post. They did not directly respond to the question but said “after leaving office, Barack Hussein Obama rapidly became a multi-millionaire who even bought a luxurious Martha’s Vineyard summer estate”.

“Meanwhile, President Trump is the only president in modern history to have actually lost money in office because he has consistently put everyday Americans and America First – not special interests.”

We’ve been examining video being shared on social media of flooding across many coastal areas of the Philippines following Typhoon Fung-wong.

In one verified clip we’ve looked at there’s an entire road under water, including what appears to be the entrance to a yellow church that has been partially submerged.

We were able to trace the video to the town of Virac, in the central province of Catanduanes. In Virac we found the San Rafael Chapel and matched a distinctive arch from the flood video to images on the chapel’s Facebook page and Google Street View images.

The chapel’s Facebook account says mass was cancelled on Saturday and Sunday.

  6. What’s the evidence for claims Russia is behind drone ‘hybrid warfare’?published at 13:43 GMT 10 November

Flights were cancelled or delayed at Brussels Airport on 4 November after apparent drone activity was reported

Earlier we reported that the EU’s top official, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, has described a series of Nato airspace violations as well as drone sightings and incursions as "hybrid warfare" waged by Russia.

Russia has denied all accusations of engaging in "hybrid warfare".

Elena Lazarou, who runs the Hellenic Foundation for European and Foreign Policy, says that while investigations into the origins of many of these drones are still ongoing there is “substantial evidence” of Russian involvement.

“In the violation of Romanian airspace in September, fragments clearly pointed to a Russian Geran drone,” Lazarou told BBC Verify.

“There is suspicion that some of the drones may have been launched from vessels, including from the Russian shadow fleet,” she says, referring to a clandestine network of ships allegedly operated by Russia to avoid international sanctions.

Lazarou says drone warfare is set to become the new normal and is already becoming commonplace in other theatres of conflict, from Sudan to the Red Sea and even by cartels in Brazil.

“Drones are low cost and multiple purpose, as they can be used for both military and tactical purposes,” Lazarou says, adding that they’re much easier to procure and adapt than conventional equipment.

  7. Where have drones been reported in Europe as Belgium reports new sightings?published at 13:04 GMT 10 November

    Thomas Copeland
    BBC Verify Live journalist

BBC Verify has been looking into reports of airspace disruption across Europe after further incidents reportedly involving drones over the last few days.

The latest incidents came on Sunday when officials said three drones were detected above Belgium's Doel nuclear power plant and operations at Liege airport were temporarily halted.

These are just the latest in a series of drone sightings over airports and military sites in mainland Europe in the past few months.

While the origins of many of these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are unknown, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described them as "hybrid warfare" waged by Russia.

“One incident may be a mistake. Two, a coincidence. But three, five, 10?” she told the European Parliament last month, adding: “Russia wants to sow division.”

The frequency of these drone sightings has increased since September when more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace.

We’ve covered a number of these incidents here on BBC Verify Live including when a UAV led to the closure of Copenhagen airport for four hours.

We’ve also seen an uptick in Russian military jets entering the airspace of Estonia and Lithuania - both members of Nato - as well as a helium weather balloon crossing into Lithuania from Belarus.

I’ve combed through local, national and international media reports to build a picture of where in Europe these events have been concentrated over the past few months and plotted them on a map.

As can be seen from this file picture Tuapse is a key export terminal for Russian oil

We’ve been checking two videos posted overnight that appear to show a strike on the Russian Black Sea port of Tuapse the site of a key oil export facility.

The footage was filmed from the town’s residential areas and we located some of the buildings the featured in the videos. Both Google maps and Yandex (a Russian search engine) have street view for this area which helped us match these features to what we see in the videos.

Media reports say sea drones were used in the attack with authorities in the Krasnodar region saying four unmanned boats had been, external , external“neutralised”, external in the Black Sea, external. BBC Verify has not confirmed this.

Earlier in November, we explained how a satellite image taken after a previous strike on Tuapse showed what appeared to be an oil slick stretching out into the Black Sea.

A screengrab from a video showing large waves lashing a village in the Philippines

We’ve been looking at the impact of Typhoon Fung-wong which hit the Philippines over the weekend, leaving at least two people dead and forcing the evacuation of around 1.4 million.

In one clip which has been shared on X and Facebook we can see an enormous wave rising above roof height at a village on the coast of Gigmoto, Catanduanes. The houses appear to stay intact, but water passes in between them and forms almost a river in the street behind.

We checked the buildings seen in the footage with available satellite imagery. Handily the village is covered by Google Street View meaning we could get a close-up match with one two-storey house in particular that is in the video as well as comparing palm trees and telephone cables.

In another clip that has been widely shared this morning a huge wave is seen to crash through a coastal resort on Luzon island in the north of the Philippines. As the person filming runs from the wave their camera picks out a sign showing it is the LA Sunshine Beach Resort in Dinadiawan, a village in Aurora province.

We have checked the resort’s Facebook page and can see it has been closed for renovations.

We do see sometimes see old footage being passed off as new when natural disasters happen so we carried out reverse image searches of several screengrabs and found nothing had been posted before the weekend.

    Good morning.

Our verification team has been checking videos posted online by people in the Philippines after Typhoon Fung-wong hit the country, killing at least two. This latest storm comes less than a week after at least 114 people died when Typhoon Kalmaegi hit the Philippines.

Elsewhere we’re looking into reports that the Russian Black Sea port of Tuapse has been attacked again overnight having been struck just over a week ago. Video footage posted online appears to show and explosion and flames at the site through which Russia exports oil.

We’re also examining the latest reported drone sightings over western Europe after officials in Belgium said three drones were detected flying above one of the country's nuclear power plants. So far we’ve collated all the reported sightings of recent weeks and will ask experts to tell us what is going on.

As ever, we’re always looking for ideas from our readers about stories BBC Verify can investigate - do drop us a line by clicking on this link.
