Unidentified gunmen in the western Indian state of Gujarat have shot dead a civil rights campaigner and environmentalist, police say.

They say two men on a motorcycle attacked Amit Jethwa as he left a building in the city of Ahmedabad on Tuesday evening.

Mr Jethwa campaigned against illegal mining, which is a major problem in a number of Indian states.

His father said he had received death threats before he was killed.
