IMDbProStarmeterSee rank
He grew up in Frechen near Cologne. During his time at school he played for the Frechen 20 amateur team until an injury ruled him out of active sports. Calmund then worked as a coach at Frechen 20, where he led the B youth team to the Middle Rhine Championship in 1968. After graduating from high school, he trained as a foreign trade clerk. Then he studied business administration. Calmund also worked as a coach at the clubs BW Königsdorf, Frankonia Lövenich and BC Efferen. He was also a youth selection coach and headed the Cologne-Land football district. In 1976, Calmund joined the Bayer 04 Leverkusen football club as a youth leader. He joined the association's board, where he remained represented until 1988. In the 1970s and 1980s, Calmund played a key role in the professionalization of Bayer Leverkusen into a Bundesliga-ready and internationally competitive football club.

Calmund married Sylvia Häusler for the third time; He had five children from his first two marriages. In the club he brought professional footballers like Rudi Völler and Bernd Schuster to Leverkusen. He also hired the Brazilians Tita, Jorghino, Paulo Sergio and Emerson. From 1988, Calmund worked as manager of Bayer 04's professional footballers. Under his responsibility, the team with coach Erich Ribbeck won the UEFA Cup that same year. In 1999, Calmund was promoted to managing director of the club. In this role he had to take responsibility for Bayer Leverkusen's streak of bad luck, as the club was able to win four runner-up championships in the Bundesliga but no titles. For health reasons, Calmund resigned from his role as managing director at Bayer 04 on June 30, 2004. However, he remained connected to the football club as an advisor.

From September 2004, Calmund was seen as the presenter of the new RTL series "Big Boss", which was about a competition between start-ups. In the run-up to the 2006 World Cup, Calmund was appointed representative for the World Cup in North Rhine-Westphalia in autumn 2004 by North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Peer Steinbrück. On April 25, 2005, Calmund was elected to the supervisory board of Fortuna Düsseldorf with a large majority.
