Winston Chow was elected Co-Chair of Working Group II in July 2023. He is Professor of Urban Climate and a Lee Kong Chian Research Fellow at Singapore Management Universityâs College of Integrative Studies. He was a Lead Author in the WGII chapter on âCities, Settlements and Key Infrastructureâ and Lead for the Cross-Chapter Paper on âCities and Settlements by the Seaâ in AR6, as well as contributing to chapters in Working Groups I and III that had urban assessments. Dr. Chow was also a member of the IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data) in AR6.
His main research interests are on urban climate change risk and vulnerability, and on urban climatology with a focus on heat island adaptation and mitigation. He is a Co-Lead Principal Investigator for the Cooling Singapore initiative, which is a major multi-âdisciplinary and multi-institute research project dedicated to developing solutions to address Singaporeâs urban heat challenge since 2017. Dr. Chow advises on several Singaporean and international urban resilience research projects, and also teaches courses on climate change and urban sustainability solutions at Singapore Management University. He has a Ph.D. in Geography from Arizona State University, and holds Bachelors and Masterâs degrees in Geography from the National University of Singapore.
