Rabat – The Central African Republic inaugurated a consulate general in the southern city of Laayoune today.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans abroad, Nasser Bourita, co-chaired the opening ceremony with his Central African counterpart Sylvie Baïpo-Temon.
The new consulate becomes the fifth diplomatic representation inaugurated in Laayoune, after the Honorary Consulate of Côte d’Ivoire, opened last June, the Consulate General of the Union of Comoros inaugurated in December, and the recently inaugurated Gabon’s Consulate General.

Morocco and the Central African Republic enjoy notable bilateral relations. Morocco has continued to support the African state since the civil war broke out in the Central African Republic between the government, rebels from the Seleka coalition, and anti-balaka militias on December 10, 2012.
Morocco has sent 12,000 troops as part of the UN peacekeeping mission in the country, known as MINUSCA, since its inception in April 2014, to protect civilians and help to restore the authority of the state.
