Distributed Model Predictive Control of Hybrid Systems

C. Saravanan proposes a research project to design distributed model predictive control (MPC) algorithms for hybrid systems. Hybrid systems involve both continuous and discrete dynamics, as seen in complex high-tech systems combining physical processes with digital controllers. While MPC can control such multi-input multi-output systems, it becomes complex at large scales with poor stability. Distributed MPC aims to reduce this complexity by having local control agents make independent decisions, removing the need for a central controller. The project objectives are to develop optimization algorithms for distributed MPC of large hybrid systems, ensure the stability of the overall system, and compare performance to centralized MPC.

Distributed Model Predictive Control for Hybrid Systems

By
C.Saravanan

Objective
To design distributed model predictive control (MPC) for hybrid systems.
Wherever continuous and discrete dynamics interact, hybrid systems arise. This is
especially profound in many high-tech systems, in which logic based components,
digital networks and embedded controllers are combined with continuous physical
processes. As these high-tech systems are becoming increasingly complex. In order
to control those complex systems controller must handle operational constraints
and applicable for multi-input multi-output systems (MIMO). Model predictive control
(MPC) is an advanced control technique that solves a constrained optimal control
problem and can be used for MIMO systems. MPC for large scale hybrid system is
more complex and stability of the closed loop system is poor.
To deal with large scale hybrid systems, distributed model predictive control has
been developed to reduce the complexity of computational burden and
implementation. In distributed MPC distributed control agents make decisions locally
and independently, removing the need for a central controller. The challenge is how
to coordinate this distributed decision making so that stability of the overall system
is maintained, and system wide performance is acceptable. The following points are
the objectives of proposed system.

To develop distributed algorithms for solving optimization problems arising in

MPC of large-scale hybrid systems.
To design distributed MPC that provide feasible control actions that lead to
closed loop stability of the whole system.
To compare the performance of centralized and distributed MPC solutions
when they are implemented in the same control problem.
To find the formulation of MPC problems and the construction of subsystems
so that distributed MPC can be implemented efficiently.
