This dissertation was conceptualized to assess and describe the lifestyle,

fitness status and job performance of the personnel of Police Security and
Protection Unit of the Philippine National Police. It aims to develop a policies and
programs suited to maintain the health and physical fitness of the policemen
including lifestyle check to determine their capacity to perform the job as law
enforcer of the nation. The Republic Act No. 6975 in 1990 and amended by RA
8551 in 1998 clearly stated in Section 14 and 15 the health requirement for the
appointment of the new policemen that includes height and weight depending on
their age and sex. Meanwhile, former PNP Chief Panfilo Lacson implemented the
program on physical fitness by measuring the waistline of policemen during his
leadership. He required to undergo every policemen who had overweight
condition to keep their weight normal in a given allotted time. At present, there
were report that many of the PNP personnel are getting bigger and the weight is
going beyond the normal value which is against with the law as mentioned in the
previous republic acts. This is the most reason why the researcher conducted
this study to describe the fitness status of the policemen and suggest appropriate
programs to maintain the desirable weight required in the profession of being a
law enforcer. The study considered the 100 personnel of PSPG based on the
computation of the sample out of the actual population of 1,277. Both quantitative
and qualitative research were used known as Triangulation or Mixed Method of
Research. The study used a survey questionnaire to gather significant data to be
used in the formulation of the research findings. Other sources of information
was from interview, using the attached interview form to determine the existing
policies and standards in terms of physical fitness and health in the PSPG unit
and PNP in general. Consequently, the findings revealed that the Health and
Fitness Status of the Police Security and Protection Personnel in terms of
Physical Health, Psycho-social Health and Lifestyle are all Average. Physical

Health and Psycho-Social Problems are generally described as Better than

Average Health. The problems are greater in Psycho-social problems and lesser
in Physical condition. The Job Performance of the PSPG Personnel was Very
Satisfactory in all categories of the performance evaluation form. Psycho-social
Health and Psycho-social Problems had a higher impact in terms of Job
Performance. Most of their indicators are correlationally significant with Job
Performance. The Republic Act No. 6795 and 8551 were the basis of the Policies
and Standards of the Philippine National Police including the programs of hiring
the new personnel. However, in terms of programs on physical health, the PSPG
conducted the Hataw Dance and Pulistenics once a week. The Philippine
National Police should implement the No Smoking Policy to all personnel.
Likewise the Strict Adherence to RA 8551 Section 14 should be made. In addition
to the current health programs of the Philippine National Police, the PSPG unit
should initiate the program on Wellness Dance, Diet Counselling, Lifestyle
Modification, Smoking and Drinking Stoppage Program, Mental Health and
Rehabilitative Services.
Towards the maintenance and achieving high level of wellness, the
recommendations were formulated such as: maintain the Health and Fitness
Status of the PSPG through strict implementation of programs in health
monitoring system. In addition to the health benefits of the policemen, they
should have a free annual check-up to prevent the occurrence of health risks. Do
a daily fitness program instead once a week. It includes: Wellness Dance and the
existing Pulistenics and Hataw Dance. Conduct a Pre and Post Physical Fitness
Test annually as a basis of future health and fitness program. Implement the No
Smoking and Drinking to the policemen. As a law enforcer, they should be the
model to the society. A self-assessment and supervisors evaluation should be
utilized in determining the job performance assessment to have a fair evaluation
of job performance. For the future researchers, it is recommended to include in
the study the Mental Health of the PSPG personnel.
