Building Science 2 Report
1.0 Introduction
The site selected is an urban infill project, a new community library located in Brickfields. This report is
to analyze and formulate an appropriate lighting and acoustic setting which will help to further enhance
the interior with the help or artificial and natural factors in the site. The lighting set up includes the
natural daylighting, artificial lighting and the integrated systems of both natural and artificial lightings.
The acoustics analysis is to report on the appropriate reverberation time, combined sound pressure
level and transmission loss between different spaces selected.
2.0 Lighting
2.1 Daylighting
The selected area for daylighting analysis is the Galleria located on the First floor of the library. The only
source of daylighting is from the curtain walls located at the faade facing the main road.
DF = (E/ Eo) x 100%
Average value of Gallery rea= 650lux
DF = (600/20000) x 100%
= 3%
According to MS1525, average daylight factor of 3-5% have good daylighting condition. The study area
with the daylight factor of 3% provides an adequate lit space which does not cause glare.
The selected artificial lighting space is the study area located on the second floor of the library. At night,
the study area relies solely on artificial lightings for the exhibition purposes.

At night, the artificial lightings are turned on to brighten up the interior spacing of the study area. The
artificial lights illuminates equally as shown in figure 4 above.

3.0 Acoustics
3.1 External Noise Source
l = 1x 10
Total intensity l = 1x10 + 1x 10
= 1x10
SPL= 10 log (1x 10 / 1x 10 )
= 70dB
The external noise with a combined SPL of 70dB generated from the vehicles and street activity travels
into the bookstore. The SPL of the external source does not meet the requirement of a bookstores SPL
requirement which is 45dB according to ANSI. Therefore, the Curtain wall is used as a treatment to the
problem of the noise. The transparency also provides good lighting into the bookstore for readers to
view books on the shelves.

RT= (0.16xV)/ A

Reverberation time (Peak Hour)
RT= (0.16xV)/ A
= (0.16x137.56)/16.4152
= 1.34s
The reverberation time for office meeting room during peak hour is 1.34 s. According to Acoustic
Standard ANSI (2002), the optimum reverberation time of the office room during non-peak hour is
<0.8s, hence it can be concluded that it has not meet the requirement.
I suggest to install SuperPhon Wall coverings to reduce the RT of the room.

After installing the SuperPhon wall coverings, the new RT of the space has decreased to 0.8s which meets
the RT requirement of an office room.
