Tips Add Maths

This document provides tips and advice for the Additional Mathematics SPM examination. It discusses topics to focus on, such as quadratic functions and trigonometric functions. It emphasizes showing work clearly when proving or solving problems. Common mistakes are highlighted, such as incorrectly finding the values of x when given tan 2x = -1. Keywords like "hence" and "estimate" are explained. Common misconceptions are addressed, such as mistakes in finding the 8th term of an arithmetic progression or the gradient of a line.

ADVISE
You are not allowed to use dy/dx or the graphical method. You
should work out the answer by completing the square.
State your final answer correct to 3 decimal places. If you neglet
this instruction, you will lose marks.
Do not give answers which are out of the given range. If not, marks
will be deducted.
Do not solve the problem using accurate scale drawing. You should
use the formulae/ concepts taught in this chapter.
You should draw the graph using the given scale. If not, you will
lose marks.
You are not allowed to estimate the median from an ogive. You
should calculate the median using the formula
n
-F
m=L+ 2
c
fm

ADVISE
Usually you have to use the answer obtained from the previous
section in your calculation.
No numerical answer is required. Answers are usually given in terms
of variables.
The answer is usually given. You are required to show clearly the
steps how you arrive at the answer. In this type of question, you must
be familiar with the mathematical formulas, rules and laws.
The answer can be worked out mentally. Hence, you can write down
the answer without showing the working.
Find the root(s) of a given equation
For example, estimate the median from an ogive. A certain range of
answers is acceptable.
Obtain the answer by showing proper steps of working
Prepare a table of values, plot the points on a graph paper using
a suitable scale and then join the points using a straight line (or a
smooth curve )
A graph paper is not required. The accuracy of the graph is negligible.
The important factors are the shape of the graph and the position of
the graph with respect to the axes.

the values of x for
0 0 < x < 180 0.

COMMON MISTAKE
