ASSIGNMENT -6
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
1) INTRODUCTION
WHAT IS PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

The term professionalism originally applied to vows of a religious order. By at

least the year 1675, the term had seen secular application and was applied to
the

three

learned

professions: Divinity, Law,

and Medical

The

term

professionalism was also used for the military profession around this same time.
Professionals and those working in acknowledged professions exercise specialist
knowledge and skill. How the use of this knowledge should be governed when
providing a service to the public can be considered a moral issue and is termed
professional ethics Professionals are capable of making judgments, applying
their skills, and reaching informed decisions in situations that the general public
cannot because they have not attained the necessary knowledge and skills. One
of the earliest examples of professional ethics is the Hippocrati oath to which
medical doctors still adhere to this day.

MEANING OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

Professional ethics is a term that encompasses the organizational and
personal standards of behavior a professional individual is expected to
possess. Most organizations have their own internal code of practice that
defines the professional ethics of a certain profession.

EXPLANATION OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

Professional ethics is an ancient concept, with one of the earliest examples in
history being the Hippocratic Oath for medical professionals. Some of the most
common components of professional ethics codes refer to knowledge, honesty,
accountability, integrity, loyalty, compliance with the law and more. Individual
responsibility is a main component encompassed in professional ethics. Besides
codes, organizations may use other measures to implement professional ethics,
such as continuing education and various support mechanisms for professionals.

3) IMPORTANT OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

The Importance of Ethics in your Professional Life. Good Ethics is a fundamental
requirement of any profession. It is integral to the success of the business as
well. Ethics is a system of moral principles governing the appropriate conduct of
a person or a group.
Good Ethics is a fundamental requirement of any profession. It is integral to the
success of the business as well. Ethics is a system of moral principles governing
the appropriate conduct of a person or a group. Maintaining good ethics is being
consistent with the principles of correct moral conduct constantly.
An organization strives continually to be in pursuit of its goals while benefiting
the employees in building up their high competencies. In this direction, the
adherence to high ethical standards of the employees can be very much
contributory to the impressive achievements of business goals being turned out
as planned and intended.
Ethics refers to human conduct as to make judgements between what is right
and what is wrong. It could be that there are several factors that may encourage
one to adopt unethical behaviour, but the right person is he who, despite facing
ethical dilemmas, assesses the situations and makes differentiation between
what is morally good and bad in order to follow the rules and code of
professional conduct. Good ethics causes to gain confidence of superiors while
promoting integrity, which means to continue doing right things even when we
are not watched.
The importance of ethics in professional life can be evidenced by a number of
instances showing failure of businesses and several scandals. It may be rightly
said that the situations would not have been so worsened had there been

observance of ethical standards. Therefore, maintaining ethical standards is

must for the prosperity of an organization as well as the development of ones
personality. Good ethics will lead us to maintain our honest image. It will enable
us to refrain from such activities that may discredit to our profession. Thus,
adhesion to good ethics is to let our conscience be our guide at all times. Albert
Schweitzer says, Ethics is the activity of man directed to secure the inner
perfection of his own personality.

4) EXAMPLE OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

For example, a lay member of the public should not be held responsible for
failing to act to save a car crash victim because they could not give an
appropriate emergency treatment. Though, they are responsible for attempting
to get help for the victim. This is because they do not have the relevant
knowledge and experience. In contrast, a fully trained doctor (with the correct
equipment) would be capable of making the correct diagnosis and carrying out
appropriate procedures. Failure of a doctor to not help at all in such a situation
would generally be regarded as negligent and unethical. Though, if a doctor
helps and makes a mistake that is considered negligent and unethical, there
could be egregious repercussions. An untrained person would only be
considered to be negligent for failing to act if they did nothing at all to help and
is protected by the Good Samaritan Laws if they unintentionally caused more
damage and possible loss of life.
A business may approach a professional engineer to certify the safety of a
project which is not safe. While one engineer may refuse to certify the project
on moral grounds, the business may find a less scrupulous engineer who will be
prepared to certify the project for a bribe, thus saving the business the expense
of redesigning.

5) CONCLUSION OF PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

Professional ethics express what a professional society is about. They are an

emblem to focus on, to support, to identify with and to advocate for. Our Code
expresses who we are, what we do, and shows how our profession functions for
the good of all. Our areas of work are related specialties. Those who are
unqualified have the potential to do harm.
Although ethics is a word with multiple connotations, what professional ethics
are about is sociological. Professional ethics are always a matter of work and
who is qualified to perform what task for which clients. Professional ethics
should ultimately be for the benefit of those who are served by those who labor
in professional occupations. Our Code reflects our professions relationships
with the larger society and, it is anticipated, the present update will be officially
adopted by our affiliated professional organizations and state affiliates.
