writing ways in the germs handout for their health booklets.
● Students will demonstrate proper hand washing technique wash their hands by using
a sink with running warm water and hand soap.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Complete a page for the Health 1. Observational
booklet. a. Germs Handout Checklist.
2. Demonstrate how to wash hands. 2. Observational
a. Hand Washing Checklist.

Assessment Scale:
● Growing, Target, Needs Improvement Checklist (Hand washing)
○ Growing- Students showed all the correct steps to washing their hands
■ Steps to hand washing
● Turn on warm water
● Take one pump of hand soap
● Rub hands together for 20 seconds (students sing song of
their choice)

● Throw paper towel away
○ Target- Students showed at least 4 of the 6 steps to washing their hands
○ Needs Improvement- Students only showed 2 of the 6 steps to washing their
hands.
● Growing, Target and Needs Improvement Checklist (Germs Handout)
○ Growing- Student wrote and drew 3 ways of preventing germs from
spreading.
■ Possible ways
● Using a tissue
● Covering coughs and sneeze in a sleeve/arm
● Using sanitizer
● Washing hands
○ Target- Student wrote and drew 1-2 ways of preventing germs from
spreading.
○ Needs Improvement- Student did not write or draw a way of preventing
germs from spreading.

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
● Know what to do before eating a meal. (Hand washing)
Key Vocabulary:
● Germs- invisible things that can get on your hands or other parts of your body
● Bacteria- tiny little organism that can make you sick
● Virus- tiny particles that cause diseases in people
Content/Facts:
● Germs
○ How they can spread and how to prevent germs from spreading
■ Facts
● Can spread with contact with others
● To prevent from spreading
○ Washing hands
○ Using sanitizer
○ Using a tissue/ shelve

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
1. Bring a paper plate with some water in it, black pepper and hand soap to the large
circle table.
2. Call students by table groups to stand around the circle table.
a. Tell students to make enough room so everyone can fit around the table so
they can see.
3. Explain to the students what you will be doing.
a. “Boys and girls, I am going to do a little experiment and for this experiment
I need a paper plate, water, ground black pepper and soap. As you can I see,
I have water in the plate and I am going to sprinkle the black pepper on the
water. Next, I am going to put a little drop of soap on my finger and then put
it in the water. But before I do, does anybody want to guess what might
happen in this experiment?”
4. Take a couple hands of what the students predictions are.
5. Conduct the experiment.
6. Tell the students to keep what happened in their heads and ask students to go to
their spot on the carpet (facing the rocking chair).
7. Ask a student to tell the class what happened in the experiment.
8. Make the reference that the black pepper are like germs.

Development/Teaching Approaches
1. Read the story Germs Make Me Sick by Melvin Berger
a. “We are going to be reading about germs and how germs spread”.
2. After reading, discuss the vocabulary words bacteria and virus
a. Bacteria- tiny little organisms that can make you sick
b. Virus- tiny particles that cause diseases in people
3. Conduct the glitter demonstration
a. Have a paper plate with glitter on the plate nearby. Act like you are going to
sneeze into your hand (after sneezing place hand in plate). Next, look over to
the students and pick a student and ask them for a high five.
b. Ask student to stand and join you at the front of the class and show both
your hand and the student’s hand
c. Ask the students what happened
i. Take a couple of students’ thoughts
4. Explain that when you sneezed into your hand, you put germs on your hands. Then
you gave a student a high five.
a. Ask, “Where did those germs go from my sneeze?
i. Take a couple of students’ thoughts
5. Grab the anchor chart paper that says, “Preventing Germs from Spreading” and post
it in front of the students on the carpet.
6. Ask the students to think of ways to stop those germs from spreading
a. Ask, “What can we do to stop those germs from spreading to all of our
friends?”
i. Take students’ thoughts
1. Some possible ways would be
a. Washing hands
b. Using hand sanitizer
i. Write ways on anchor chart
ii. Encourage students to think about what they should do when they
cough
1. Possible ways
a. Coughing into our arms or sleeves
b. Coughing into a tissue
i. Write ways on anchor chart
iii. Ask, “What about when I blow my nose?”
1. Possible ways
a. Using a tissue to clean my nose
b. Use sanitizer after cleaning my nose
i. Write ways on anchor chart
7. Show video on how to wash hands
a. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QKrFxahFC4
8. Review with the students on the steps to washing their hands
a. Remind students to sing the Alphabet or to sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little
Star when they are washing their hands
b. Refer back to the experiment from the beginning of the lesson, the soap
made the (germs) black pepper spread away.
9. Tell the students that they are going to show you how to wash their hands
a. Tell the students that you are going to call students (throughout the rest of
the day) to the sink where you will assess the students on if they can wash
their hands by taking the right steps.
10. Explain to the students that they will be making a “My Health Book” throughout the
time we are talking about health.
a. Show the “My Health Book” example to the students.
11. Explain to the students that it is their turn to write the ways to stop germs from
spreading in a page for their health book.
a. Tell students they can use the anchor chart as a visual reference
12. Ask for one student to help pass out the page for everyone.
a. Remind students to put their name on the top
13. Call students by table groups back to their seats to get started on the page.
a. Call specific students to the circle table to work with teacher aide on writing.
14. As students are working, use checklist and call students to the sink where they will
show you how to successfully wash their hands.
15. When students are done writing, ask a student to hand out 1 piece of construction
paper to every student.
a. Tell students that they are going to glue the germ handout to the construction
paper for their “My Health Book”.
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
● Bring students back as a whole group and pull students from the popsicle cup and
ask,
○ “What is one way to stop spreading germs?”
○ “What is one step to do when washing your hands?”
○ “What song can you sing when you are washing your hands?”
● Make ending point that stopping germs from spreading is what is going to make
everyone healthy. Washing our hands will also keep us healthy.
● Mention that the next day, we will talk about another way to keep us healthy and
that’s with the foods we eat.

Accommodations/Differentiation:
● Ask teacher aide to pull struggling students into a small group to help them write
ways of spreading germs.
● Monitor students behaviors
