Overall Objective of the Workshop
The overall objective of this workshop is to
strengthen knowledge and skills to
improve environmental governance of the
mining sector by creating a multi
stakeholder forum for dynamic learning
and discussions on how Human rights
based approaches can lead to more
responsive, participatory, accountable and
sustainable governance of the mining
sector.
Specific Areas of Focus
• Meaningful and Inclusive Stakeholder
Consultations-communication, outreach and
engagement plans

• Community-based environmental monitoring as a


tool to prevent conflict (Examples from Mongolia and
Base Titanium in Kwale, Kenya)

• Mining reclamation and design for closure-


techniques and approaches used to achieve orderly
closure and successful reclamation of mines and how
this should be an important part of the ESIA

Specific Areas of Focus
• Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)-
Considering the upcoming global meeting of the
Conference of the Parties of the CBD in November,
where mainstreaming of biodiversity in the mining
sector will be a focus area in reclamation /
rehabilitation upon closure of the mine.

• Study visit to Base Titanium- to appreciate Base’s


comprehensive Environmental and Social
Management System (ESMS) and a structured and
integrated community engagement systems
Means of achieving the Objective
• Exchanging knowledge and experiences on inclusive
environmental governance across countries and between key
stakeholders in the mining sector (governments, civil society
and the private sector)
• Using concrete case studies to analyze what went
right/wrong and to serve as a basis for group discussions and
learning (Sweden, Mozambique, Mongolia and Kenya).
• Distilling good practices from group discussions
• Presentations by select experts and practitioners on key
topics
• The workshop will also build on the results from the
assessments that have been carried out in Kenya (SESA for
the mining sector) and Mozambique (RoLPA-M).
• Workshop to benefit from Global Guidance Note
